- Thrift with me while I travel! I went with some students to a music festival in Bourbonnais, IL, and while they rehearsed, I got to do some thrifting! Although there were some pieces that were priced ridiculously high, I was able to find some new to me men's brands, designer pieces, and other great items that will sell for a large amount. In this video, I share a few thrifting tips I was able to utilize during this thrift trip, and of course, there is a thrift haul at the end. I had an item one time that needed a tag. The employee closest to me was just complaining about his job and all the manager wanted him to do (rather loudly) with another employee. I took it to him and he said, "What do you want to pay?" I said, "Uh, $5.99?" He marked it $5.99 AND in the discount color, so it was 1/2 off that. Then he said, "Want me to retag all the items in your cart?" So my tip would be find someone who hates their job! hahahahaha

😮😮 as an employee of Goodwill Corporate .. I paused and laughed 😂😂 girl the amount of foolery we see at Goodwill I wouldn’t be surprised if people were popping off tags. I came across the 2xl man (small man’s cousin) last weekend and found 5 NWT Duluth Long sleeve button ups in Sz 2xl and 3xl and also 4 Carhart heavy flannels in 2xl and 3xl.

I have a thrift store near me that STAPLES tags through the leather of shoes, boots and purses. They staple everything and write in permanent marker on the inside collar of clothing. It's so aggravating. Even if I want something for myself then 90% of the time it's ruined by staple holes or bleed through ink. The fact that your store WROTE on the actual heel just made my blood boil. These stores are out of control and just adding beautiful items to the landfill waste that so many who donate the items are trying to prevent. Anyway, great haul as always 😁
Hi Becky!! Love the tips. I work at a thrift store and Becky is right! Do Not pull the tags off assuming you will get a better price, it may backfire. Customers with multiple items with tags missing are remembered. If you are a repeat offender you may not be able to purchase the item. Thanks Becky!!
haha just like frequent shoppers at thrift stores start recognizing the workers, it's no surprise the workers remember frequent shoppers as well. Thanks for sharing your insight, especially as someone who works at a thrift store! (also, do you enjoy working at a thrift store?!?)

Finally a haul video that is not from the bins! I have no access to bins. Great to see what you picked and the price you paid. Some of the haul videos are almost shaming by the reseller, as he/she never buys anything over 2.00! My favorite find of yours was, by far, the Eileen Fisher dress in 24W. I GASPED! That's an amazing dress, hope you get a lot for it! I don't know how you have time to do everything you do BUT thank you for making videos that part-time resellers / non-bin resellers can actually enjoy!
Awww thank you for your comment :) My closest bins is 1.5 hours away from me, and I rarely get out there, so I hear ya! Locally I only have thrift stores and consignment stores available to me. We gotta work with what we got, right? And yes - that Eileen Fisher dress was great! I'm so glad they didn't try to give me a ridiculous price on it at the register!
I'm not very close to the bins either so I've never been. As Becky said, the closest ones to me are 1.5-2 hours away and I never go that far when I'm sourcing unless I'm already headed there for another reason (which is rare).
The thrift stores in my area are slim pickings and/or everything is way overpriced so I also do a lot of retail arbitrage (buying things from retail stores when they're on clearance).

@@beckyparkco For the most part, I do. I'm still sitting on some pieces I got a couple of years ago from Kohl's clearance (Valentine's dresses, faux fur vest by Simply Vera), but I may end up putting everything in my flea market booth. Oddly enough, the RA items that sell really well for me are socks and graphic tees (especially men's). Lol
Most of our goodwills will give the generic price but one won't sell anything without a tag. They send it to the back to be priced later. They once made my son cry because they wouldn't sell a $1 toy that he'd been carrying around and the tag had fallen off.

@@beckyparkco yes, it would have been different if it was one of the half dozen nerf guns my 6th grader was buying. But this was my little one, and he had picked out one single toy, and they wouldn't let him buy it. I was appalled, as were the customers behind me.

Lemon essential oil usually takes sharpie off of stuff for me. Maybe try that on the heels?

@@beckyparkco I wouldn't suggest it on an unfinished leather like a suede like material (that didn't work out). I haven't tried it on a finished leather but maybe try a spot check on the inside (sole facing side) that no one sees anyway?
Our goodwills won’t sell anything without a price on it. They take it to the back and one time I was told they don’t put it back out for a week. 😂 but I’ve had things with no prices at many locations here in Orlando and I’m told every single time they can’t sell it. Even if it’s a Walmart tee for my kid. So I HATE finding anything without a tag bc it’s always something good I swear.
I bought leather wipes on amazon and they're great at getting the crayon and marker off! Hope that works! I also love Talentless lol his hoodies are so thick and warm!

I've tried the dry erase marker, color over the area and wipes off price or use vaseline and a q-tip. Voila.
Love your videos 🥰. My local Goodwill doesn't sell you the item if there's no tag 😔. Although some Goodwill will make an exception of you really want it and they need to clear some clothing out. I just laughed when you said put it in your purse!!😂😂

So true with finding one senators items. I found 5 or 6 Free People Boho Dresses all the same size and two pairs of luxury heels both the same size. I found one of each and started looking in those size areas and found those items together.

I did exactly what you said to do today and it worked! Pair of red crocs didn’t have a tag and she gave them to me for $1! I was shocked! But I a dress didn’t have a tag and priced it $8.99 like all the other dresses 😣

awww thank you!!! and I FEEL YOU - I have truthfully spent most of 2022 super unmotivated, but for whatever reason, I've got a little kick in my butt right now. I'm not gonna waste it!
If items doesn't have a price tag on it at my Goodwill location you have to go to the back of the store with the item knock on double doors for someone to price it before you can purchase it. So, if I notice beforehand, I always go straight to the back to get price sticker in order to avoid any delays when checking out!
Just the other day found a pair of Frye booties new ..they used a marker on the bottom of the boot but the marking had smudged so only .99 was showing. The lady said will you do 4.99…of course I said

Absolutely! I actually have some men's pieces myself too, mainly stuff I've stolen from my husband lol. Can I ask - does your wife just know to look in the men's section or in the men's category if purchasing online? Sometimes I wonder with pieces like this if I should just list them twice - one as women's, one as men's. What are your thoughts?

Becky, you are funny, I am a safety & security professional by trade. I specialize in Asset Protection. After apprehending a shoplifter, and joking around with some of my friends who are in my line of work and still police officers, I came up with my store name. The name just came to me: when loss prevention catches shoplifters they call it a "Grab." and when a shoplifer gets away we joke and call it a "Deal. I just merged the two names together, I added a z at the end and a n in the middle.

Also I've noticed they write in the bottoms of the shoes also bcs sometimes people peel the price stickers off so that rely on the sharpie price to know what it's been priced at 🙄
I really enjoyed watching this and I was so excited to see the Eileen Fisher dress since I'm a plus size too! It's always exciting to find good quality plus sizes while thrifting. Just curious - I know you go the PNW sometimes to see your family, have you ever gone to the Eileen Fisher Renew store in Seattle? They sometimes have great items on super sale in the back room - I got some great plus size stuff on my last visit for $19.99 - pricey but I tripled my money. BTW I do enjoy a well dressed small man......

Thrift stores that write on their merchandise really do such a disservice to buyers (reseller or not). A value village nearby used a red marker on the soles but it then transfered red marks on like 98% of their shoes uppers when they rub up against each other. I get the idea is to prevent shoppers who think they're saavy by putting different stickers on different items, but they really should come up with something different. I especially wish they wouldnt do that to the shoes in the glass case, that seems almost nonsensical since they go from case to register with no shopper interference. Great find on the margielas!
It is insane. They don't do it in my local goodwills but up north in the suburbs, they all seem to write the price both on the sole and with the sticker.
Our Goodwill's policy is to post signs that say if there is no tag, you can't buy it. You have to go back later and hope it's still there.
That's so crazy. They're probably losing so many sales that way :(

That's nice that they just charge what the price is by type of clothing. Our Goodwill stores here will not sell anything without the tag attached. Lol they pull it right out of the pile and keep it behind the counter.

yes, but I don't know what happens here! We don't have a bins. I believe there's one in our state, and I heard they don't take stuff from retail goodwills. So I really think the stuff here just goes to a landfill or something like that.

I found a dress the other day at Goodwill with no tag, I forget what brand it was but I could've sold it for $50-$70, and when I got to the register I was told that she couldn't sell it to me because it had no tag. I was honestly so ticked because I have NEVER had that happen at Goodwill.
That's so annoying, but I have heard of that happening. I think it's b/c there ARE people out there who try to rip tags off of items and get them for cheaper than how Goodwill priced them. The few bad ones always ruin it for everyone else :(
That happened to me the last time I was at my local Goodwill! I was so mad because it was just a simple t-shirt, nothing fancy. All of their t-shirts were $4.99 at the time so I don't see why they couldn't just charge me $4.99 for it. I haven't been back in a long time because of that and also they keep raising their prices.
Yes my thrift stores won't sell it either if it doesn't have a price,so now I put a price on it before I get to register. Cashiers are not allowed to make up a price at register because god forbid they sell something that had value for a cheap price ...ya know they might "lose money "

My Goodwill does the same thing! If I really want it, I will take it back to the where they are processing and politely ask if she can put a price on it. They will not to it at the register. but most times will put on one in back. Sometimes I earn brownie points by bringing up items that don't have tags OR if I accidentally ripped it off, even if I don't want to buy it.

@@beckyparkco yes it is! I was born in Danville, spent lots of time in Champaign in my youth at that mall, moved up here to attend Olivet in the 80’s and am still here! LOL. Yes Embrace’s owners have just purchased a large building so by the next time you come hopefully they will be moved into it. Also we have a pretty nice St Vincent’s you need to check out too. All within a mile or two of where you were.

true lol. BUT when we do it, the person giving us the item knows we're going to do it. I doubt random people dropping their items off at goodwill have any idea how high goodwill is going to charge some of their stuff.

, Do you usually remove the price tag or the paper tag that came with the clothes. I have read some seller comments on Poshmark said that they will removed the paper/tags to prevent return to retail. I have some items that still has a price tags on it. Thank you and I appreciated your time.
Hi! Do you mean, once I have purchased the item from a thrift store, do I remove the thrift store tag? Always yes. If you mean, do I remove the new with tags tag? Then I don't. Are buyers trying to return items they buy on Poshmark to retail stores? If so, that's crazy! I've never heard of that!
