I was a bodybuilder back in my 20's, 30's and early 40's, I was fairly huge, then I quit cold turkey, woman issues. I just turned 65 back in December and was forced into a Medicare program. The good part was a free gym member ship. I started back at what I thought was zero but I gained about 15+ lbs. of muscle in 5 months, no joke. If you had it when you were younger it will come flying back when you get older. I was a natural , I think that made the difference. Also, back then I didn't have the supplements that are available today, L-leucine, L- Glutamine, they were probably there I just had not idea I needed to use them plus the 9 essential aminos. Its almost like a whole new world opened up and invited me in plus watching Dr. Mikes videos was very advantageous, great information. PS. Whoever said you can't gain muscle after 50 is full of Bologna, I am packing it on so fast I wonder if I have a glandular issue, at 65.
I was a body builder too and I haven’t trained for 15 years… just walked and I am fit. I broke my leg a year ago and to re hab I’ve gone back to the gym and just like you I’m shocked after 3 months that I’m lifting the same weights as I was in my prime. I’m 54…

I'm struggling to find studies that prove genes matter so much, anyone? A simple Google search "confirms" it, but I want to read the actual studies.

I honestly find PEDs overrated, I always throw them to the last spot. Do they work? Sure, but they are by far the least important on that list.
Genetics don't matter unless you are at one end of the extremes, otherwise you should just train.

Key factors keeping you big as hell
I think a major underlying premise that should be figured out first is your level of body dysmorphia. Everyone that lifts weights with the intent of bodybuilding has it. Before I started, I didn't think I would have body dysmorphia, but apparently I do. I watched WIll Tennyson's latest video where he switches to low volume work to see what would happen and he shows his measurements at the beginning of the video. Anyway, I've always been under the assumption that I'm smaller than Will, his arms and chest look great, his legs are HUGE and his physic was a goal that I wanted to hit, because I looked at his body typed compared to mine and thought he would be a good, realistic fitness target. However, when seeing his measurement's this morning, I realized I'm actually BIGGER than Will. My shoulders are 4" wider, chest 3" wider, waist and hips about the same. But when I see Will in his videos, I think "damn I wish I could get that big." But my body dismorphia is apparently so bad I think I am smaller than a dude I'm actually bigger than.

True... but my moral of the story is, you are actually probably bigger than you think and the guy in the gym you are looking up to, is probably doing the exact same thing to you and you both think one is bigger than the other without realizing it.
Nah, that's a great point. I think it's instinctive human psychology. I do the same thing in relationships, things that "could be better" draw way more attention than things that are "already good," even when the net balance is very much in the "already good" zone.
this^^^ it doesn't matter how heavy I work out, how big of a pump I get, how long I've been doing it, when I look in the mirror it often times looks like I've made 0 progress even though I am progressively overloading, and noticeably bigger now than in previous photos -- even during my bulking phase I've gotten a lot more conscious about my stomach fat, even though there's probably only the slightest increase. I am consistently shocked when people say they notice I work out; like, I oftentimes feel SKINNY.
To this DAY I don't weigh or measure myself, nor have I ever tried a max weight one-rep because I'm scared I won't be as big as I want to be, or my max weight will be disappointing.
It's genuinely such a surprise how fucked your self-perception can be, and I never fully understood how warped things can get with body dysmorphia until I really started trying to get big.
If anybody reads this and can relate even a little bit, please don't be so hard on yourself. If you're training hard, and consistently, 9/10 odds you're not seeing yourself the way you objectively are, and people see the progress you've made. Trust me, they see, it's real and tangible; your negative self image is not.

I’m 43 years old and started lifting when I was 15. You are 100% right in your analogies, man and well said. I was tempted many times to go on gear and the only reason I didn’t was because of my wife’s affirmation of how good I actually look. We are our own WORST critics.
Take pictures and whenever you feel down just compare yourself to what you used to look like. It's the only way to keep realistic. You are the only person you need to be better than.
This is good to remember on the lazy days…something is better than nothing. Keep putting in an effort every week 💪🏽
Be careful not to overtrain. I’m 65 and getting stronger than when I was younger pushing too much. I’ve always been natural.

I'm that last guy you described. I lift hard for a year maybe two, then life happens or my depression kicks in.
But I have come to the place at my age, in my 60s, that I'm OK with it.
Yesterday, a man in his 50s and some guys in their 20s say that they seen me get fit over the last few months and ask how I did it.
I explain as you said. Be intense to the point of almost crying, they laugh. Eat lots of protein ( gram per lb), rest, creatine and be consistent, and do a full range as possible.
I also compliment complete strangers when I see them do a hard set or good form. They are always very thankful that someone noticed.
Sometimes I'm self conscious about how hard I train, because I'm normally the only one doing it, in my immediate area. I feel like I must look crazy, grimacing in pain and out of breath for a few seconds after a set.
I like helping others, and sometimes push guys who have better bodies than me, although I'm stronger than they are.
I know that was off topic, but I like when I help others. Definitely not a bodybuilder, just a strong old man.😊
Good thing when you get off track is to realize that you can do much less and still possibly make gais or at least keep current form.
@Flahtort yes, I fluctuate between xl and 2xl so I keep all my old clothes. I'm in the process of slimming down to xl trying to get 220lbs but still squating and deadlifting 400lbs.
High protein and low carbs for the last week. Lifting keeps the depression at an even keel.
This channel helps, because I did my first deload ever. Never new of such a thing and it helped.

I didn't know about deloads at all until this year, I kept burning myself out and after a few months of hard training just running out of steam and not finding the drive to get back to the gym consistently for up to a year at a time. Having used one in my last mesocycle it's a total game changer and I can already tell that with them planned in my schedule that sticking to my workouts is gonna be a hell of a lot easier.
Same, when I feel I can't do this anymore I skip a week or I do a fast training with a lot less volume in 1 day so the rest of the week is off and after that I feel much better.
Just did my first one. I'm a novice, but I'm also in my mid 30s. Could definitely feel my joints and tendons hurting. My deload was a couple weeks of lower volume and lower weight. For my own body, it seems to have helped a lot. Think I crank the intensity back up this coming week. We'll see. 😂
My deload right now is I got a solid size tattoo on my shoulder so I gotta take some time off anyway. Definitely feels better than when you get sick cause when you get sick you feel like you lose hella progress

I watch these videos with my son. I’m 64 and he is 21 years old. We’re both big gym goers. Can’t tell you how much we love this content. Joined the gym very soon after I handed up my PhD thesis. Never looked back.

It's amazing how many of the things you mention with regard to fitness also apply to completely unrelated things - like personal finance, home maintenance, etc. There's a lot of room to be sub-optimal as long as you keep at it consistently, and the sooner you start, the better.

I've been training for 13 years now and the single best piece of advice I can give to new lifters is to enjoy the process. I look at where I am now and Im a totally different man. But the first few years I really didn't. But I enjoyed lifting and luckily I stuck with it. Time is your friend, not your enemy in this process.
I trained for two months fairly consistent and i like my arms already. 🤣

There’s a saying that fits well here “don’t step over dollars to pick up nickels”.
One of the earliest Dr Mike vids I saw (years and years ago) was about this same idea. All the random supplements and programs are like 5% of the explanation - do the 95#% right before worrying about the 5. Train hard, eat well, and sleep right. Maybe supplement with protein powder. Anything else is just you tricking yourself into believing that’s what’s missing instead of just doing the basics well.

I think so far the most honest, concise summary that I have seen on this topic. Consistency is key, and we shouldn't forget the reason of going to the gym and wanting to become "jacked". Is it health and enjoying being fit and able to move or trying to impress others?
Consistency. That is the most important and challenging factor. Agreed.
Showing up and overcoming the internal voice that make excuses for unnecessarily skipping a day at the gym or eating a second crap meal when you just had your cheat meal for the week.
Consistency and discipline. Do that and the rest will work itself out over time.

@@sundvallen its really not genetics, its steroids, now when you’re up at the echelon of competition, then only genetics can separate competitors cuz they’re all on the same gear, but at the bottom for the average person we ALL have the genetics to be jacked, someone on steroids and not jacked is simply missing a key component to his diet or training, but it’s very unusual for that to be the case

I took ~20 years off an am regretting it but that isn't stopping me now. I let what was once the normal perception of gym culture and diet culture make me lazy. Social media in general has a lot of downsides but you sometimes find these little jacked gems like Dr. Mike that can make the youtubes worth it. Thanks for doing this stuff Dr. Mike, Derick, James Linker, The Bioneer and yes, even Joey Swoll.
Consistency with what you are doing. It's the basic rule for so many things in life. Yes, there may be setbacks, but you have to get back on the path and keep going.
This was a comforting video, I train consistently for something 5 years, with some gaps due to health problems and the pandemic, I don’t look big nor very good, but I surely look better than I did 5 years ago, and I am definitely stronger. So maybe if I just keep doing what I’m doing when get like in my mid to late thirties I will actually have a good physique.
This put me to ease dr Mike. Been out the gym 2 weeks due to finals and have been kicking myself mentally wishing I could be in there.
muscles start to get smaller and weaker after 3 weeks , if you hit your macros you will be fine , its more of a mental game at that point

Sleep is a huge part of the basics. I almost regret training through a fairly long period of time in my life when I had severe insomnia. Insomnia sucks. But I was still trying my best to keep working out. The gains were MINIMAL and I just thought my genes SUCKED. I ate well, I trained well, but the results just didn't come. As I finally managed to fix my sleep (it's definately not perfect, I don't sleep as much as I'd like to but I sleep WAY MORE than I used to, at least twice as much) I started to see some serious gains about a year later at the age of around 25. I wasted my early twenties in regards of making gains. But I've gotten more and more results over time, it took a long time to really get my body going right after the insomnia (around a year).

Not gonna lie, really helps to hear that not lifting for a week or two periodically (or not training as hard as I could) doesn’t have a massive, negative impact on overall results. I’ve been lifting for about 5 years but only seriously for the last 2 years and occasionally lose a week of [good] lifting/training due to work obligations (military life lol).
I’m a bit more psychologically at ease regarding missing some training. Really appreciate this video.
I'm 5-months into weight training, & it's such a fascinating journey. I've put on 11lbs & it seems the vast majority of it is muscle...which is all great, but the thing is I started as a relatively normal 48yo guy, so even with some great gains, I'm now looking pretty good in a tight-ish fitting t-shirt, but nowhere near my hyper-specific goal of "Hey, check out jacked Grampa over there!" I'm loving the training & I eat well enough for what I'm trying to achieve, so the fascinating part to me is the glacial pace. I'm a grinder & a committer by nature, so I'm psychologically made for this, but I still catch myself thinking "geez, I'm working really hard & consistently & I'm still not jacked?!" Then I'll realize on a Monday that I'm now definitely stronger in this or that than I just was, or I'll notice that I'm definitely making visual improvements in my back or arms or whatever, & I'll think "imagine what I'll look like in 2-years...hell, 5-years from now." Then I'll cry in my crying room, put on the black t-shirt my wife digs, & I'll keep going, because Dr. Mike has filled me with the knowledge that if I simply keep going, I'll freaking get there...I'll get to jacked Grampa-ville.
Simply put. You gotta love training as soon as you can walk and do it everyday till you die

people on social media are like the 0,1-0,05% tho , go out and see what average person looks like , i wish one day i stay consistent for 15 years , kudos to you.
Your so correct it takes like 15 to 20 years to transform with layers of muscle , I’ve fallen off I few times but Im back within a couple weeks. Plus genetic .! If your structure is not of proper proportion just forget competing all together! You can easily get injured also if your not athletic or have a sound skeletal structure.
I'll say this about falling off - sometimes it can give you a long term boost that's a net gain. After fracturing my ankle and looking like trash after months of inactivity I was extremely motivated to get all the factors of training right and this persisted past the point of just regaining the level of fitness I had before.

I wish I had realized this all in college. I'm just north of 50 years old. I started lifting when I was 16. I quit when I was 18. I went to the gym a couple times in college but literally two or three times. It all went away. I joined a gym in my mid 20's. I went probably 6 times. I joined a different gym in my early 30's and went for about a year but only about 6 months consistently. In 2014 I joined crossfit and went for three years consistently. At the end of 2016 after a work injury, I never went back. In 2020 I installed a squat rack in my home and lifted for a year and quit after getting covid (and being a puss). Last year I finally got serious and came to the realization that Im going to have to show up and lift consistently and never quit lifting, ever. So here I am showing up on the regular. I'll check back in another 50 years and see where we are at. I've had a lot of retrogressions and I can say without reserve that they are not worth it. I appreciate you making this video.
This is the reality for a normal eprsion , life happens , shit happens , you have to really enjoy it and i dont mean enjoy the idea of being jacked , you have to enjoy the sport to stay in it.
This is literally the formula for success in anything. The trick is to build a talent stack, which is just this, but in several areas with multiple disciplines that may not seem like they fit together, but put together, make one unique skill that only you have. That's how you get rich. Mike is a great example. Bodybuilder, PHD, and amazing social skills. His talent stack is unique to him, and now, hopefully, he's a wealthy man. Good person to look up to, and I'm glad to see him be so successful. It's really cool.

Sleep was my biggest factor. A solid non interrupted 8-9 hours of sleep will do more for all the other factors than any natural supplement you can take.
If you can sleep 8-9 hours per night everything you do will improve. You’ll get stronger faster, build muscle faster, lose fat faster…it’s the number 1 thing you can do that will govern how everything else works from your nutrition to your training.
If you’re on steroids, it won’t matter as much since you’re pumped full of hormones already.
Great insight. I think the people who dial down to specifics like what brand of shoes or creatine you use are just looking for shortcuts, I think subconsciously they know it is just time and consistency but want to believe there must be a quicker way or way to skip the first 3 years of progress. Not helped by all the social media clowns and reply guys giving it the whole "Bro, I looked better than that after only 3 months".

Is the RP app good for women, not for body building but rather for strength + toning?
I think the short answer here is yes. In other videos he has talked about training bikini girl body builders and if you see them out in the wild they don't look 'jacked'. If your delts or whatever are starting to get too big for the look you want then put that muscle into maintenance. I don't want to be as big as a body builder but the apps have helped me get closer to what I do want.
toning doesnt exist , toning means losing some fat and building some muscle , if you are not training at all any basic programm and good diet will give you gains
I’ve been using the frame of that Tennyson workout since January. We regimented a daily protein shake with creatine. I’ve gotten stronger every week and just finished Day 25, but one of my kids has gained 15 pounds of muscle since January! It works!

The single most important factor is how well your genetics respond to AAS. Everything else like food and diet matter but only genetic responders become IFBB pros. In bodybuilding.

Body recomp yes at 59 but no real growth.
I eat clean I have a trainer 3x week Consistently for three years.
I’m more solid and much stronger but not any bigger.
If I cut so my belly flattenes I loose thickness up top. If I eat to thick my upper then my belly is a bloated mess.

Ive been doing this for 15 years now. Ofc ive learned a lot and did dumb shit at first. I think im in a somewhat ok shape, doing somewhat ok weights. And i still very often have this problem. What could i do better?! Im nowhere near the big guys. But then a video like this comes along and reminds me that maybe im just not going to get much further without getting on PED's and actually....thats ok. I have ok genetics and i do what i can. When Genomic Engineering comes around in the 2030s I will code in uber geek genetics as that will be the rage by that time.
From personal experience when it comes to having seen friends, co-workers, family etc. having worked out then fall off. It's always the unwillingness to make it a permanent lifestyle habit and sticking to it. This included myself at points.
1) People that train super hard. Wanting quick results. Burn out. Stop. That's the most common.
2) People getting some results then complaining that it takes too long to be "worth it", then fall off. Is the second most common.
3) Real life events screwing their routines and habits (moving, money, sick etc.) so they stop working out, then using those as excuses is the third most common.
In most cases I've witnessed with people close to me including myself. The main issues are usually these. A root cause being an unwillingness to accept the fact that it takes time, not accepting that you have to make it a permanent lifestyle habit. People need to learn to enjoy the journey and the process, or else the internal motivation to succeed will never take root.
sticking to it if you dont like it isnt sustainable , at least for the grand majority of the population , i myself have stoped many times the last 3 years and just now find a way to actually like training
