Thanks BBB. Somehow I missed this until now and I enjoyed the hell out of it. I might have to go watch Tombstone now. So S45VN looks pretty good to you. 👍🏻
Not really S35VN has better edge retention but S45VN is more corrosion resistant. Basically its LC200N just slightly better on edge retention and little less corrosion resistant. I would say its just Crucibles LC200N. Great steel nothing that changes the world. It isn't Rex 121 or Maxamet or Vanax Super Clean.
I love the edge I can get on s45VN (S30V is no slouch, I can get a wicked edge on Spydercos with their HT). Lots of great steel options out there these days but I still love the 45.
One of my favourite western scene ever.. As far as the steel is concerned it's s35vn + 2% more Chromium.. I'm not sure if it needs more corrosion resistance.. I have several knives from several manufacturers in s35vn and Ive never had any rust or even discoloration yet and Kizer in that steel are my beaters layin' around and I live 1.5km from Javanese Sea.. There are more interesting steel , although not yet released but elmax 2 and m398 are 2most interesting looking... Look forward to get one of those.. Or vancron.. There is guy in Switzerland (Kase Knives) making some pretty amazing knives with relatively fair price.. Check him out
@@marekmasar5216 it's not about the corrison resistance for me, it's that the design will form more Vanadium carbide and less chromium Carbides thanks to the additional nitrogen shifting up what is forming in the steel with HT allowing the Niobium to do more work as well. Finer Carbides than s35vn and S30v at higher hardness of temps that dissolve the Carbides are used. Don't know or care what the production guys are doing with it, by I'm running it hard and will get fine structures.
@@FearNoSteel Thank you for clarifying that to me Bear.. Actually that was great demonstration what comon knife enthusiast will think of such minimal composition change.. Thank you Shaun🙏😉.. I'm sure it's gonna be worth ,just like any steel you work with.. ✌️
I like the comparison of the movie scene and the blade steel as it relates to the knife community. I own knives in all three steels. I don't have enough experience with S45VN to make any informed speculations other than it seems to have promise. Regardless of S45VN's promise it doesn't mean I'm going to ditch my EDC in S35VN or its twin in S30V.
Its more corrosion resistant less edge holding properties. Like sorta LC200N but not as good on being Stainless but should hold an edge longer than LC200N
I know this is completely off subject,, but I got my hands on some CPMS35VN. I’m going to attempt to heat treat it in a propane forge then I’m gonna do a dry ice and kerosene cryo. I know you’ve tried everything under the sun so my question is do you have any pointers and tips and is this even possible to get 60 HRC or more this way. Thank you for your time and knowledge that you share with us.
Really needs +2000f and a good soak and temp control to work best, I highly recommend getting a Evenheat KH418, worth every penny. I had a propane muffle furnace with a Thermocouple as well when I was getting started, It was a game changer when I got the electric furnace.
@@FearNoSteel that’s the exact heat treat oven I’m looking at getting, I’m saving up for it now. Yeah that higher temperatures with a long soak is definitely a problem for me in a propane forge
@@FearNoSteel I got an envelope with about $300 in it and I’m doing just that, I’ve sold three knives now. Me having to wait like this ill appreciate it even that much more lol.
if i understand this right..i am not alone not to like s35vn..i like s30v..can't say anything about s45n..never had it..but i always felt very alone with it..not to like s35vn..to me it was never an upgrade from s30v..it was a downgrade..
BBB, can you watch any movie without relating the banter to steels? I hope not! Awesome video. Now what to do with the s35-vn in my pocket? Throw it out the door?
Where are the other super steels like elmax, vanax, m390, cpm m4, cpm cruwear, cts-xhp, maxamet, and cpm magnacut for example? Would of been funny if they mock s30v and s35vn. At this point, I don't think s30v and s35vn should be considered as super steel anymore. They should make it low budge now just like with d2 steel.
We dissolve more chromium carbide, the Niobium pins grains better than Vanadium. The boost of Carbon and Nitrogen allows us to get more carbon in solution and more undissolved MC type Carbides. So we get finer structure, lower carbide volume for toughness and a better ratio of the harder MC type carbides rather than an overwhelming amount of M7C3 chromium Vanadium rich Carbide
That’s a new one to me but if it’s any harder than s35vn won’t be up my alley plus I cant even imagine the price though I will buy a knife in that steel some day cause I like the steels almost as much as the rest of the knife gotta catch em all🤡
More options for custom HT to hot rod it. In a production knife it may offer more wear resistant, Stability and corrison resistance than s35vn. Difficulty sharpening has more to due with techniques and tools rather than a particular steel being difficult unless the Geometry is thicker and HT is shit. Mostly though it's lack of techniques and tactics.
Funny... But I see no need for a more stainless S35VN, which is less tough. If I was looking for a tough steel, I'd be looking in totally different category, same is true for corrosion resistance. Yes, I think S45VN is well balanced, but these day, being the golden days of knife steels, there are just better options...3V, 4V, Vanax, Vancron, LC 200 come to mind.
Big Brown Bear I did mate....and I stand to be corrected, but I understand it like this: S45VN has higher corrosion resistance, if only a bit, because of higher Cr in solution while Mo being equal to S30/S35VN. The pictures seem to add truth to that assumption. Am I mistaken?
Always gets me to laugh, Funny I just watched Tombstone last week! " You may get me, But not before I make a canoe out of your head Ike!" Read Larrins article yesterday and Phil Wilson's reply on Spydercos forum. Interesting to see how it all turns out after testing.
The guy at the bar minding his own business is A2 with a good heat treat.
lol
I thought he was Cru wear w any kinda heat treat lol
440c with fancy heat treat and best years behind him but has supplier connections.

I was wondering what to do this afternoon, thanks. Time for some researching.👍🇦🇺🍺
You should explain all super steels in Tombstone speak! Much easier to understand and makes perfect sense!
A steel like Maxamet has got a great big hole, right in the middle of it. It can never cut enough, or patina enough, or dull enough to fill that hole…
