  • Roza Eskenazi, a true legend of rebetiko, in a 1975's TV appearance. (She must have been 85 years old at the time.) She talks about the beginning of her career in Thessaloniki and the glory she enjoyed afterwards. Haris Alexiou appears for a couple of seconds near the end of the video, when Eskenazi sings ""Hariklaki".

It is said that Roza was born in 1890. In this video she could be 85 years old but she, talks, moves and acts like she was at least 15 years younger appearing very clear-minded for someone of that age.

No, she just says that she came from there to -still Ottoman- Thessaloniki, where she began her singing career after being discovered by some Turkish musicians. She also says that she lived a very happy life (money, fame, travels etc).

Oh my God what a sharp mind at such an age!!! Her age was always a matter of dispute; We don't know if she was born in 1890 or 1900....

This footage is now extremely valuable! The title that runs across the screen at around 01:40 mentions that it's excerpted from theTV series (translated) "In Search Of the Lost Image" directed by Lakis Papastathis and "Musical Evening" directed by Dafni Tzaferi. Clearly there was an entire filmed performance and interview that got edited down to a TV show, and then re-edited to these brief excerpts. Any Greek media people out there? Then mporei kaneis na vrie to arxiko film i video?

as an Anatolian, i fully respect the Greek civilisation, which is the foundation of Turkey too... but what the difference between Greece and Turkey (i mean Atatürk’s Turkey) is that, Turkish nation is a new concept of constant unification around a common future, regardless of racial background... for example “cancer” is one of humanity’s biggest enemies! how would it be if we unify around fighting cancer? if you don’t like Turkish, let’s adopt another language that everybody would agree...
