I'm not growing butternut squash this year. However, when I was much younger and still living at home, my dad let me put in a garden in the back yard. He rented a tiller and I was able to plant any seeds that I wanted to. At the time, we were living in southwest Ohio where it rained on a regular basis. I planted a variety of butternut squash called Butterbush. The fruit was identical in appearance and flavor to the butternut squash that grew on vines. I don't know if this variety is being offered anymore; but, it was a good variety for people who had limited space with which to work. I didn't need to trellis it.

Hi CaliKim. I am a military mom living on base in Japan. I am not allowed to dig up my yard😏, but because of that, I took a bunch of ideas from your channel about growing in pots. I can't be more pleased with how it is turning out. Butternut squash is one of my "crops" this year. I made a trellis out of sturdy poles and green plastic fencing that rests against a wall, and arches over to my vining green beans. So far they are about 8 feet long with 6 healthy squash. Thank you for all of your tips and tricks!

I love the coffee walk idea. My little girl (2) and I went for a morning coffee walk around our veggie garden after seeing your last coffee walk video. She had a cup of warm milk in her keep cup. It's winter here in Australia but warm enough to have lots going on in the garden. Love your videos.

I do the same. I take my mug of coffee, walk down the garden paths along my raised beds and roses an sit down for a few minutes next to my chickens before I go to work. When I do a bit watering I tend to take my mug with me and sometimes forget where I‘v put it down because there is always some weeding ore tidying I do at the same time.

Lula Salem I’m growing butternut squash for the first time. The leaves are HUGE and are stopping the sun getting through to the flowers/fruit. Dare I cut off a few leaves to let the light through? Is that sacrilege?

    • @thebuttermilkyway687
      @thebuttermilkyway687 4 роки тому +1

@@deebrownsell412 why does the sun need to get through to the flowers or fruit? It's the leaves that make energy from sunlight. If you cut off the leaves, guess what that does ...

I cut into a butternut squash I had bought the other day, and it was the most gorgeous deep orange color, one of the prettiest I've ever seen, and cooked up beautifully. So I saved the seeds to try growing some this coming year. This past growing season I had some pumpkin plants sprout from an old pumpkin I threw out on the garden in late fall/early winter, so I ended up growing my first pumpkins from volunteer plants! I'm looking into trellising squash and cucumbers next time to save space, and I'm planning to plant pumpkins in with my corn, since I noticed the prickly pumpkin vines keep the wild critters from eating my plants. I really like that arched trellis you have there. Coffee in the garden....mornings don't get much better than that!

I love cooking with butternut squash and threw some seeds directly from my chopping board (pulp and all) into the garden without much thought. Didn't do anything to them. Not a week later they sprouted and have continued to grow and already had some male blooms appear. Really excited about it. I had zero idea how to grow them so this was helpful. Will be making a trellis (I have some slim wood beams that I'll try to hammer together). Crossing my fingers! Great channel!!

I have a very unique winter squash named Red Kuri growing on a cattle panel trellis I customized for my community garden plot. I picked up 3 concrete remesh panels (that's what Home Depot calls them) for about $10 each. Size is 4' wide x 7' long with 4" spaces. My garden plot is 10' x 20'. I started at one end and placed 2 wooden stakes in the ground about 3' apart. I set the 4' side of the first panel at soil level against these stakes. I then bent them the wire panel down to the ground about 4' away and against 2 more stakes, forming a low arch. I took the next panel, set it ground level against the stakes I just used for the first panel, again bent it over into a low arch against 2 more stakes 4' away forming a low arch right next to the first one. Finally I took a third panel, set it against the stakes for my previous panel and bent it over against the final 2 stakes, about 4' away. I ended up with 3 panels bent in low arches one after the other, then planted my Red Kuri winter squash at the base of the first panel and guided it over all 3 panels and all the way to the end. I guided the actual squash between the nearest 4" hole and let it hang down. When I run out of room I'll turn the vines and run them back where I started. I hope you got all that! I would love to send you pictures but can't do it here. Maybe another way? I'm getting lots of comments about it.

I live in San Diego County. I got a butternut squash from Trader Joe's. I took out all the innards and some of the seeds had yellow leaves so I thought I would see if they would green up. I put the whole innards in a plastic cup filled with water and set it on a table on the patio. They didn't turn green. I also had to spray some neem oil due to fruit flies. I decided to bury the whole thing after a week. We have prolific lemon and valencia trees this year and instead of putting the rinds in the landfill, I have been burying them in the yard. I had a week of mushy rinds to bury. I put the butternut squash seeds on top of the citrus rinds and covered with an inch of dirt. In three days the butternut seeds sprouted and we were able to transplant them to other areas of the garden. I tried the same exact thing for spaghetti squash seeds the next week, and 30-40 sprouted. I don't know if it was the week soaking in water, or if the mushy citrus rinds had a role in it. (I didn't water the seeds on top of the citrus rinds until they sprouted.) Big, beautiful sprouts.

I tried to tie my butternut squash to bamboo poles last year, and I got very few squash. I was thinking when they grow on the ground that the vine has the opportunity to re-root to feed the plant & encourage the squash to grow. Or maybe it simply didn't get enough sun? When they're on the ground, they grow ugly spots but when they grow up a tomato cage then the squash looks pretty. And the animals don't pick at them either when growing off the ground.
The first year I tried it, I grew like 30. Next year, I grew almost half that. Butternuts have become more difficult, perhaps 1st year was beginner's luck?

I started this year in growing butternut squash at first I had planted them in a bed with alot of other vegetables not realizing that they grow as a vine so I had to transplant them in another spot where they would have room to grow. So I thank you for this video I do need to add a trellis that is going to be my next project.

With your garden trellised and compartmentalized as it is all over the yard, I'm not sure how to implement your ideas since our garden is just in one place, 5 ft. by 50 feet across the back of the yard and we ROTOTILL every Fall. How do you work your soil every year with those posts and the cattle panel there, for instance -- and in other areas where you have things in a raised bed?

I’m new to your channel! Also new to gardening. I live in Oklahoma and I’ve just started a few fruit trees, and have volunteer butternut squash. This is all new so I’m taking it slow, just introducing a few new things a year. My biggest question is on what my expectation should be, if I were to consistently build up my garden with veggies, what percentage of daily food do gardens contribute to? What could I reasonably assume would feed us? Just from your experience, I know there’s a lot of variable factors!

Would hog wire work? I planted and nothing came up, so I replanted after amending the soil, and replanted. So it seems that all of the seeds grew! My bed is 3 ft by 15 Ft. How many plants would be healthy in that space?

I plan to grow my butternut up a trellis next year. Do they need extra support, like a cloth of some sort wraped around them an tied to the trellis. I believe they will hold themselves up, but since you have done this before pleas let me know your experience. Thanks !!!

I planted butternut squash at my country house garden a few weeks or so ago. First time ever growing winter squash, I've never even tasted butternut squash lol I planted 3 seeds in a bed with a bunch of other veggies and did not put in a trellis, all 3 are growing. Pumpkins are growin all around them. I thought they could just ramble around like the pumpkins and watermelon are doing, will that still work with no trellis?

Such a lovely coffee mug from Brian and Emily! Good friends who know what you like (coffee and gardening) are the best. ;-) I am so happy for you that your book made it to the bestseller list! That is so wonderful. And it is soooo nice it will be available in our cold, dark an wet wintertime, haha, such a joy to read it then and plan for the next season with your tips and suggestions. These tips here for trellising were great and very usable too - as always. Thank you for another coffee walk in cheerful company (so to say).

I'm growing Butternut and Spaghetti squash up a cattle panel...Butternut on one side and Spaghetti on the other side...they have met in the middle and I'm wondering if I should prune to stop the growth and put more energy into my squash?? I have 10 Butternut Squash and only 2 Spaghetti squash...something is attacking my Spaghetti squash! I can't even believe how huge my Butternut are...larger than my hand! Woohoo!! Hopefully my Spaghetti will catchup!

Hi Team, I started growing butternut squash for the first time and they are jumping out of the ground. After seeing your beautiful garden, I have ordered some formal garden arches which arrived yesterday. Can I still train my butternut squash to grow up the arches going in tomorrow when they have already grown horizontally and are now about 4 feet in length? I notice that the baby squash are starting to form and the vines (I have four which I plan on growing over two garden arches) are producing tendrils which is a sign that they want something to climb up on. I noticed that one of the tendrils has latched onto a fallen leaf ;-). Anyhow, I have become addicted to your channel and I think Camera Guy is a keeper and is punching above his weight. Oh and by the way, I am writing to you from a sub-tropic region of Australia. Cheers!

Hi there ! I loved your video ! I planted like 5 seeds in a little pot , the seeds that I had dried from a butternut squash I had bought last October from a farmer upstate NY. I need to put them in a pot since I live in NYC , the 5 plants are healthy but squeezed into this little pot , will they survive if I try to separate or should I just take them crowded and transplant with their soil into a larger pot ? How big of a pot ? does each plant grow just one butternut ? I have to get some wire to make the trellis too. Thanks for your answers!

My butternut and acorn squash are about 45-50 days old. I didn't put up any trellis'. Is it to late to try to prop them up? Is there a way to do it without damaging the plant's? Or should I just leave them be?

Hello! That's really informative and does answer all my doubts related to the right time to harvest a butternut squash.
If I may ask how many squash do you manage to get from one creeper on an average??
Mine are in a pot which may explain the small size of the squash that I am growing while I manage to get only one healthy squash from one plant. Is that normal??
