Max holding onto the cloth roller dispenser. I remember them from my grade school in the 1960s. You pulled and dryed your hands, then the next person pulled and dryed his hands. The "uses" cloth then taken up back into the dispenser to be removed, cleaned and reused. The cloth was a continuous loop, almost impossible to break. Replaced in the early 1970s with paper dispensers. The ones I used even had a knob to turn to get a fresh piece of the cloth. They had a catch to prevent rolling to much at one time, thus Max kept climbing and then falling as new cloth was released. A technology now long gone except in old videos and then this is the only one can remember showing those cloths in actual use.
The ones I saw weren't continuous loops, they were two rolls. The maintenence people (or the towel supply contractor) would change the rolls on a schedule. If it got to the end, you couldn't pull any more out. In the movies people always hang on to the loop when some kind of floor disappears. Some kinda monster drywall anchors in use there! Thanks - Lumpy
It was one of the things that made the chemistry of the show. Poor, long-suffering Ed Platt would take every sort of abuse from this nincompoop. For the show to be prevented from becoming a complete farce, there has to be someone who played it absolutely "straight" in comedy terms. Ed Platt was the "Straight man" for the show. Barbara Feldon took over some of this role as time went on, but as she became the romantic interest in the show, the role of "Straight Man" fell to people like Dick Gautier and even to the villains once in a while (Bernie Kopell)
I forgot how funny this show was! it's great that they made legitimate gags instead of just a bunch of bungling with a laugh track like so many other shows of the period. Also who's picking up similarities in George Costanza's speech patterns?
I flew First Class on TWA the very last day they were in business. Single most rude rude crew I ever dealt with. I said I wish to speak with Captain about this. I was told he will tell you the same thing. Now sit down!
Carl Icahn was a full fledged criminal. He sold off TWA's very profitable London routes to cover the margin calls on his failing personal junk bond investments. He singlehandedly destroyed a wonderful airline. And he got away with it. What an evil man!
I am surprised that they were as risque' as they were , mid 60's.Barbra Feldon commented that Don Adams could memorize the whole script in one reading.
Yes, I realize now there are a few, well, innuendos. Like, the 95-year-old admiral is going to be Max's best man, and Max asks, can he do the job? And the Chief says, he's the best man, not the groom. On the other hand, the more innocent version of that question wasn't such a stupid one, because the admiral had trouble even staying on his feet for the ceremony.
Yeh it was a bit of a dud really, and I pegged Steve Carrell for being a good Don Adams replacement but the script was just shit. And Dwayne Johnson should've been Heimi the robot, that would've been funnier.
Back when Airline Travel was comfortable, plenty of seat & legroom, Airlines wined & dined you, and gave out souvenirs! Even strike up a chat with the Stewardesses !In other words treated you like a human, instead of a rat !
Wonder whether TWA really did have that kind of seating. Nice big comfy seats. Oh, for the days when flying was a luxury and passengers were normal. (=p)
Yes they did. It was a luxury experience in the 60s, but also the older 707 engines didn't have the lift/thrust of modern engines, so you couldn't carry as many passengers with express cargo below the passenger deck and their luggage (people packed heavy in the 60s). The planes were big though to allow that same frame to be a cargo jet and have a military variant. I used to work for Boeing CAG in the 90s.
I can't help but notice during the scene at 2:42, the logos on the seats have a superimposed red stripe over them. Was that added by the show, or by you? If it was to block the TWA logo, there's a large one on the back wall visible at 2:40. Is it like Goodfellas where they had to block-out the airline logo?
The old DC-8 aircraft's what fond memories. Isn't it funny when you are familiar with and having flown on the DC-8, well when you see these TV shows, you can see they don't do a very good job at emulating the interior of the aircraft in the studio.
Star Trek debuted in Sept 1966? Get Smart in The Fall of 1965. Unless this plane scene is a first season episode, I would be inclined to think No, that Kelly would not have a bit part in later seasons.
All those giant seats and extravagant meals to the passengers in those seats probably were in coach back then. Of course it looks like the airplane lavatories have not changed.
I think he was a prison guard at a miltary jail. He fought in the Pacific in ww2, was wounded and sent to NZ to recover. The rest of his platoon was wiped out completely, he was the only survivor. He picked up a virus and almost died. One of his parents had the surname Adams but he actually took the name Adams from his first wife.
........actually you're correct,, I'd forgotten; in fact it was cheaper to travel on a passenger ship and it was a great holiday thrown in also ,but I guess it was slave conditions for the crew and a barrel of crude as the smelly fuel was dirt cheap back then.
Can't reboot old classics like this one it was before it's time
The best comedy show ever !! It was a much better time too.

I have used one of those before, so even though I’m 20, I understood the joke.
@Paul Mentzer
There’s a Sinclair gas station ⛽️ in Idaho springs, Colorado that still has those roller towel getups to this very day.
They are still in use here down under but getting rarer.
Yeah, a convenience product much more practical. Of course they got rid of this sensibility. Pulping trees cannot go on forever.
This was a great show.
I laughed hysterically at the towel dispenser gag
"I don't understand how this airline stays in business when it's only flying one passenger!"

Why isn't this masterpiece on ME-TV ? This was a pee your pant's show . Thank you Mel & Buck .😂❤
Ed Platt's dead pan despair was a very funny match with Smarts exuberence .
Ed Platt was one of the greatest straight men in sitcom history as well as a damn fine actor.
That's what made their dialogue so
sharp. Contrasting personality.
Everybody tries to reach the one person who doesn't get it.
