  • Here we will have a look at the Omano Junior Scope, a microscope for children, but not only. It is small and portable enough also to function as a field microscope. It has bottom and top illumination and therefore you can easily also observe opaque objects with light from the top. It does not have a condenser and only one (instead of two) focus knobs. This keeps things simpler for children. I found the single focus knob not to be a significant disadvantage, one just has to turn the focus slowly when using the high power objective.

    I'm glad that there are decent products for kids, because they deserve them. As an 8-year-old in 1962, I started with an Adams student microscope. It had no light, but directed light through the stage using a mirror. One nice feature it had that this one doesn't were screws to move the stage slightly. Optical instruments became a love of my life, and I still have the microscope.

    The sensible magnification range alone gives an air of confidence in this microscope.

    I have a very similar microscope (and I'm not a kid).
    8:11 You can sort of control the depth of field with the "static diaphragms" on the same revolving selector the colored filters are on. The colored filters are alternated to different diameter holes, which act as the diaphragm, while the little lens on the stage acts as a primitive condenser.
    For its price, I think it's a great microscope IMO

    Be careful watch out for this guy. He is very addictive. Watch him to much and he gets expensive. Labomed LX400,Labomed CXL Phase Contrast, National Optical 111. Going to get Polarized Microscope accessories and others coming soon. I wish one day to meet him in person to thank him for all his work and dedication. Thanks for all you've done.

    Could you please make a video on how condensers work? I have an upgraded version of this microscope and under the stage there are a lot of mounting holes (those Chinese scopes all use the same parts) I would love to try to hack a condenser on there. What do I need to know? I was also thinking about upgrading the LED. I've found some 3W Cree LED that would be a perfect fit. (My light source is a bit different).

      Either you find a condenser that fits in those holes, or you could try and put an ocular 2mm under the stage. It should work as a condenser. For the diaphragm, you can cut circular holes of different sizes in some opaque material and place them under the "condenser" you made from the ocular.

    The quality of the glass is the same as most other cheap microscopes and the extra material for children is good. What's the name of the imaging software you used?

    Hey Microbehunter Microscopy. Do you know how to turn on the LED light? I don't mean the bottom one, I mean the forelight.

    I like the fact that even as a junior scope, it's got a horizontal stage rather than an angled one. On the downside, that eyepiece looked unacceptably loose in its mount and within the review, you made no reference to the purpose or usefulness of the dial (diaphram/filter?) beneath the stage. Given the package as a whole, did you think it represented value for money or do you believe there are better packages available at this price point?

    We are confused as to how to get the 400x magnification to work. So far only the lower two magnifications have been usable for us. Any tips?

      Close down the condenser dial and focus very carefully.

    Hi microbe hunter I have a question for you can I use epoxy resin as a mounting medium .

    • @MicrobehunterMicroscopy
      @MicrobehunterMicroscopy  3 роки тому +3

      simple answer: try it. Make sure that the specimen is sufficiently dry and that the resin is sufficiently liquid. for mounting media the refractive index must be right and if the resin cures too quickly, then it might not be able to move into the specimen (for preservation). The solvent that can be found in many mounting media will kill bacteria and preserve the specimen, so epoxy might have certain disadvantages, as it does not have organic solvents. But for specimens that are completely dry, one could give it a try.

      It's a rod-shaped bacterium. But from the shape alone, you can not say what bacterium it is (there are many rod shaped bacteria, many of them not salmonella).
