When I was teaching (last week of teaching a few weeks ago) we mostly kept the self defense to the higher ranks. In our club "Worldwide Taekwon-Do" we have simple basics that we teach the kids called step sparring and that leads to self defense as they go up in rank, it teaches distancing and where to hit. That stuff was a good way to teach the kids without them jumping straight into the deep end where one wrong move could seriously hurt someone
Taekwon-Do is the art of the fist and the foot not 70% kicks and 30% hand techniques I practice traditional Taekwon-Do the real Taekwon-Do tournaments aren't to kill each other people think that tournaments are meant to sheed blood and hurt your opponent but no tournaments are the sport emphasize of the art on the street a taekwon-Do practitioner would use knife-hand strikes, elbows, low kicks, depending on the situation but the main goal of EVERY martial art is to prevent a fight and that's what people don't seem to get, discipline goes first.
you cant expect people who dont practice self defence focused taekwondo to understand from the outside looking in, its why people like you and myself need to educate them as best we can, give them something to think about but not force an opinion on them. people who want to learn do, people who dont wont listen.
+MrSilver497 I hardly get the fight thing at all. Really i just practice MA´s because i enjoy them. Just like my sister play´s tennis. Noone bothering her all the time with the fighting crap...
I suppose at its heart, the main discipline you need to establish as a practitioner of Taekwondo is zoning (controlling the fight through the use of distance). From everything I understand of TKD, it looks like the art's main strength is that it emphasises which strikes do the most damage at maximum practical range. It just so happens that you can do a lot to make the kick particularly destructive at longer ranges, ergo it teaches many ways to make a kick devastating, and so it has become known for its spectacular kicks. At least that's what I summarised. I might be wrong.
I think overall it is better to blend both together more than anything. using a kick or hand strike to weaken or stun the opponent then quickly finish them with a arm submission / break.
Thats true, it can be more effective at times and smarter. If you want to put your attacker into a submission. But the whole point is of using the legs is, It can extend longer than you arms so you have a greater distance and it far more powerfull that your arms/hands. The key would be to keep your attacker at safe distance given the longer length of your legs. If you strike that person with a good leg attack they'll think twice about coming closer.
this is true for the most part, but I just hate that we don't show our hand to hand and arm locks more that can be very effective and many times smarter than throwing a kick.
Oh and by attack. I mean actual real attack on the streets, in their homes by folks wanting to kill them. I mean I remember a friend of mine who happens to be on the national team was held up by two people one holding a gun, the other a knife. The gun was put to his head from behind the knife came in front of him.. He knocked the gun out of the gunman's hand and proceeded to kick and punch him without mercy. The other guy fled. I remember another friend who was attacked in his classroom,
Most impressive: the choreography was outstanding and, I wonder, if some of those guys actually got kicked during these demonstrations. I must have hit the You-Tube "like" button six or seven times during this 8-minute video!
This might be nicely choreographed and not totally real but these girls have had serious training and could seriously defend themselves if need be. Look at the skill and technique. Not fake!
The competition sparring you're probably referring to is only from one branch of TKD, the WTF. Every other "type" (I guess you could call it "style") of TKD does not focus on that. Besides, full-contact Olympic style sparring does have it's benefits. The fighters are in tremendous shape, have learned how to kick faster and harder, have learn to hit a moving target, have learned to use their skill against opponents they are unfamiliar with. All these are beneficial in a real situation.
I know arm breaks, but not arm locks officially. Keep in mind this was made for the battle field. Having someone in an arm lock in the middle of a gun fight could have you dead in a few seconds. Better off breaking it and moving on. Its brutal but it works.
ive researched and the amount of people that think that taekwondo is useless in real life situations got me believing it.but I typed stuff into youtube, now I cant understand why everybody seems to think it.
From what I've seen, there's a fair few videos of TKD on YT where the TKD practitioner completely forgets to use any hand techniques and goes in with 100% kicks (like how they do it in sport). Unsurprisingly, this results in them getting their asses handed to them. I think the reputation's been sullied by practitioners who forget the name of the art means 'the way of foot and hand', so don't be discouraged :) The way I see it, the Korean Army wouldn't use it as a martial art unless it had some practical application to it.
HeinrichKonig Valid point. My dad took Kyokushin Karate and considered TKD more a sport than an art. He had many good points, but yours i hadn't really thought of.
Drake Lewis There are too many kids like you in to the martial arts that think you know what you're doing. And if you try to kick a knife out of someones hand and you do not isolate the hand you will probably end up dead. I hope for you, it never comes down to that.
You've already had your question answered, but yes, TKD has some ground techniques, but it's not nearly as comprehensive as a dedicated grappling art like BJJ. But with that said, many techniques across many arts are identical. Because there is only so many ways to apply a choke, put on an arm bar, throw a punch, etc. So when someone says, "This or that comes from Judo or Karate or taekwondo" is really a gross simplification.
I live in Jamaica by the way. We are not really a peaceful society here, sadly. So I've known many, many people who've had to use their tkd in real life. And we don't do Hapkido, BJJ, Muay Thai, etc here. I'm not knocking those arts, I wish they were available here, but they're not. What we use to defend ourselves is the TaekwonDo or Karate, some of my friends practice Karate, or Kungfu, Wing Lung Kung Fu, that we've learned. Normally those sets of people do NOT overlap.
Where can i find presentations similar to this? Can you send me some? I'm doing a talent like this for my school, and we want to show a presentation for this. Like a drama or taekwondo act or something
In ITF Taekwondo, we start with 3-step sparring and self-defense. Simple stuff, grab to the lapels, with one hand or both hands, punch to the face, grab the belt, from in front. Grab over the arms from behind. Grab both hands from in front. Bearhugs from in front. Slap to the face. That is what our White belts have to learn how to defend themselves from.
True. They do have better self defense techniques but you have to remember, this is only a showcase event. But you also have to remember, TKD is comprised of 70% leg work and 30% arms/hands.
Exactly, for one thing, it's made to be effective in larger spaces so the kicks are meant for distance, not flash, and there's a lot of hate against it because the Americanized versions are very watered down. Which might be for the best. This is just a demo though, not meant to demonstrate realistic self defense, so he is right to a certain extent, this video is mostly show.
great work great self defense great work il just started practise itf taekwond test if 2 weeks and i heard two guys who sayd that taekwondo is shitt i want to se thems face when they see this
Kicking is extremely effective on the street, it's just nobody is good enough to use it properly and still have enough time to learn ground just in case
It's mostly the WTF organization - you can't even use hand techniques in competition - only feet. It's getting watered down - the TKD I learned 20 yrs ago was BRUTAL stuff.
I do taekwondo in general. Taekwondo's ground fighting is basically non-existent and any defense against knife and sword attacks are based on pre-mediated attacks and both sides knowing what's going to happen. In reality, a knife attack doesn't come as a forward thrust slow and long. It comes in short bursts in combinations with pushes
..by another student holding a knife. He knocked the knife out of that persons hand, grabbed him by the head and proceeded to knee him in the face while saying,"Don't do that again". I'm not making this stuff up, though you will think I am. Many tkd people have used it for self defense in all kinds of situations. It works. So ill take my own experience and that of the people I train with over your belief or lack thereof in tkd.
Yeah, i understand. I kind of don't like the brazilian jiu jitsu. Not because of the martial art itself. But most of the people who practice it here at Rio De Janeiro are very arrogant. I don't like their attitude so i was looking for something to substitute it.
No, if you want an art to "compete" with BJJ's ground techniques, then TKD is definitely not the art you should be looking towards. BJJ originated from Judo, which in itself came from Japanese Jujutsu. So an art like Judo or Jujutsu would be the best substitute for it. TKD has very limited ground techniques.
I am a 500 dan black belt with over 10,000 fights, all won by one-punch knockouts. Oh wait? Evidence? Witnesses? HA HA HA, SO FUCKING FUNNY, BRB, LET ME GO AHEAD AND BE GOD, BECAUSE I DO THAT TOO IN MY SPARE TIME. You see how stupid that sounded?
GREAT KICKS!!!! maybe they should be kept below the waist . you dont know what the hell can happen in a street fight and to kick high leaves your self very vulnarable to falling down
@nhunt001 Have you ever seen what "limb destruction" can actually do? It sends a massive shock through the limb disabling it for a shot time and temporarily negating the opposite appendage! Punch yourself really hard in the forearm/bicep or even the inner thigh.... bet if your holding something you will loose grip! now imagine if your not expecting it. A kick to the arm would disarm just about anyone of a knife!
BTW what the hell is Taekwondo in general? You either do it or you don't. Do you mean you both WTF and ITF? Or do you do something like ATA tkd? WTF tkd and ITF tkd are very different btw. And yes, demos are prearranged, they have to be. I'm not talking about demos, I'm talking about real life man.
Ok so do you do ITF TaekwonDo kind sir? I do. This is the reason I feel qualified to talk about it. Also I personally several people who practice TaekwonDo with me who have been attacked with guns, knives, even cutlasses. These people dont practice any other martial art besides TaekwonDo. And yet they have defended themselves successfully. These people have been colored belts as well as Black belts. I don't know any Hapkido, I dont care about that art. I'm just saying that you are wrong about tkd
selon moi dans n importe quel pays il faudrait que ce sois des maitre coréens qui enseigne le taekwondo cela empêcherais les fédération de faire n importe quoi et de salir l'art martial
The pattern at 6:36 is the pattern i had to do for my black belt. This man is exceptional!

best vid of taekwondo ever i never get tired of this
Its always nice to see patterns that we spend ages practicing in action
As a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do I am very impressed. I will be showing my students some of these self defence moves

In my senior master's ITF dojang, we mainly use hand or fist in self defense and we kick our attacker in the nut if necessary.
they are right there above you..we do lots of self defense stuff, there are even self-defense competitions in the world championships
I think overall it is better to blend both together more than anything. using a kick or hand strike to weaken or stun the opponent then quickly finish them with a arm submission / break.
Great performance and great people wish you all the very best. .!

The more you practice it the more you understand about the damage of attacking others
very good control!
The mor you practice it the more you understand about the damage of attacking others
This might be nicely choreographed and not totally real but these girls have had serious training and could seriously defend themselves if need be. Look at the skill and technique. Not fake!
I prefer ITF style than the WTF style, i.e 'Traditional TKD" over "Sport TKD" because I firmly believe that a martial art shouldn't be a sport.
This is quite cool and some of the strikes and blocks would be very impractical but they look great

If you tried to defend yourself by kicking a knife out of someones hand with Taek Won Do, you will be dead.

It's a shame that self-defense isn't really taught anymore in TKD. Only competition sparring.

Someone could tell me if there's any ground fighting on taekwondo. I mean genuine techiniques. Not the judo jiu jitsu or kung fu thing.

It´s sad that the clubs practice more fighting and less self defense.. I really love this, more than fighting. Anyway, it´s a great sport. x3
WTF IS "WTF" AND "ITF" im curious...
World taekwondo federation and international taekwondo federation. There are many split organisations in this martial art. :(
When I took ITF in the 70s we didnt have throws, throws like these women are doing is like hapkido.
I practice teakwondo stance kick kata slow my kick
