- The JHEMCU GHF420AIO with the MPU6000 gyro was an amazing 20x20 All in one flight controller, but they are now discontinued and out of stock everywhere. JHEMCU has released a new updated version with the ICM-42688-P Gyro. I’ve compared it against the previous flight controller on the exact same build to see if it’s better, or worse….
Awesome video. Thank you so much for taking the time to making it. Keep it going!
The icm42688-p is literally the best gyro I have ever tested. Seems that you can mess them up if you mess up your fc though. Checkout some of the FC that are made by SPRacing as they are using that gyro and are working very well.
On paper it looks great, so it's good to hear it can be made to work. Hopefully Dominic Clifton decides to make a 20x20 AIO one day ;)
Too sensitive man nope.
@@RecursionLabshi, do you know if they fixed it?
If not what aio do you suggest for your frames.
They did not fix it, ask me how I know.
I got the jhef405pro icm and wigs out when armed
JHEMCU, crushing your dreams, coming to a store near you
wow! love your style of edutainment! It has some old school vibes, kinda nostalgic! Thanks for the test and info!
This is one manufacturer who hasn’t reached out… the new icm range needs a really clean 3.3v rail supplying the gyros and well even though the layout of what you need for a gyro is in its white paper…. It seems following instructions is hard….
Looks like they are giving on the 42688 gyro and have started finding old (possibly salvaged) MPU6000 chips to throw in new boards.
@@RecursionLabs it’s such a hit and miss company
Dang. I hoarded a bunch of those boards with the MPU6000. They're great. Hope they get it fixed. Thanks for the heads up on the crap gyro.
Hi, just wondering if you had a chance to look at boards with this gyro again, BF devs have introduced some fixes for boards using this gyro
Just recently 4.4.3 came out with a change "Disable ICM4268xx AFSR feature to prevent stalls" and 4.4.1 had "ICM426XX AA filter"
Did this really fix it? I've been wondering this.
And target
@@eulogy1981 No idea, I guess we will wait and see if @RecursionLabs will have an opportunity and desire to re-test this board at some point with bf4.4.3
@@sigsegv0x0b actually, here's an update. I got the newer version of the board, not the ICB but the GBA and that one is flawless works just like the old ones. No issues
I don't have this board anymore, but I have tried the new BGA boards with this Gyro they released and they are much better with the BF fixes, and someone who had this board says it flies fine now. With extreme noise they are not as good as the MPU6000, but regular flying seems fine now on a Scythe build. (I bought 5 more).
so if the gyro has WAY less internal filtering and less latency as such, then maybe lowering the filters way below stock will help. It seems SUPER sensitive of a gyro, maybe Betaflight isn't ready for it yet?
The JHEMCU FC is not ready for the gyro. They just slapped on a gyro they heard rumors about without isolating it against the ESC noise. BF devs are working with manufacturers to make this gyro work nicely, but some clone companies are just brainless zombies. BF is super clean, like never before, that cannot be the problem. The problem is JHEMCU's noisy power line that feeds the gyro chip.
@@TimeFadesMemoryLasts well said. Brainless zombies
Angry Bardwell, love it!
I purchased a rush 30x30 stack listed as having an MPU6000 gyro and put it on a new build just to find that bit flew like shit no matter what I did with filters. took the fc off after a week of trying to figure shit out and realized the fc says on the bottom that it has the ICM42688P mounted.
So what is a good alternative for the old Jhemcu in the Scythe? I bought the Scythe frame with the baseplate for 25.5x25.5 AIO layout. Is the GHF745AIO-40A or 50A any good? Also looking at the Speedybee F745 35A 25.5X25.5 AIO but it is slightly bigger
Hi, since this fc is basicly a no go, do you have other fc's to go for? (with possibly 3 uart)
25mm aio's are the way to go IMO.
@@maplefpv I found on aliexpress some units on the JHEMCU GHF420AIO with the MPU6000 gyro, I will probably risk it and hope that is actually a MPU6000 gyro. Anyway the questiion is, you use 35A AIO esc on this 3,5" build right? (i ask because i saw that there are some with 40A)
@@damianomotta1809 just avoid the company... You don't need more than 20a really for this build. Get foxeer, Diatone, iflight, holybro 25mm AIOs
@@maplefpv I don't know about those, I didn't saw them being pushed hard. I kinda trust gmcu tho, never saw anyone with problems with this one
I wish I did, but I don't right now. A 25x25 (not Betafpv) with a MPU6000 gyro is probably your best bet. That said, I did buy one of those MPU6000 boards from aliexpress which were overpriced and did get one, but I'd confirm with the seller first to make sure they have it, and it's the right version.
Hi, nice tests! Recently I bought a cheap DarwinFPV Baby Ape drone and for my surprise it came with a MPU6500 instead of MPU6000 on previous versions. Do you have experience with that? I can find very little information about it but it seems to be more sensitive to vibrations than MPU6000.
The MPU6500 is more sensitive, but soft mounting and gyro filtering should take care off that. A sensitive gyro is different than one that is sending bad information.
Hi, will there ever be tests of 4“ propellers and motors (the same as 3.5”); or could you just advise something (I wanna build apex 4“ 4s quad, I look towards the 2004 3150kv brotherhobby or 2004 3000kv emax eco II and gemfan 4023 props - is it a good choice?)
There is already a test of 4" props on 1404/1408 motors which you can find here: ua-cam.com/video/5Fq89oydPOM/v-deo.html.
I do have tests finished on lower kv 1408 motors I need to get around to publishing (along with 5")
I explicitly ordered only BMI270 and MPU6000 JHEMCU FC, but aliexpress seller keeps sending me ICM 42688 version (which have BMI silkscreen PCB).
All the 3" and 4" quads with GHF405 PRO - ICM freak out >40% throttle. I am using same PID tune and filtering that worked on BMI and MPU versions.
Like OP, I tried bigger lowESR, increase filtering (at expense of prop wash), and MUCH LOWER PID. Nothing really worked.
Hi, what to take instead of this AIO if I want to repeat your 3.5“?
any 25mm aio
They released a new version of thia board with the BGA version of the F405, and keeping the ICM42. Do you think they could have fixed the issue with the gyro?
I have the same FC with MPU6000 and it's horrible too... So it seems that not a gyro in guilty.
Hello !!!! Did you fix it ? Or i sent my fc directly to the trash ? . Thanks dude .
There's no fixing it. It either works for you or it doesn't.
The only thing that can potentially make it usable is that on AliX there's a couple of listings that claim this board has mpu6000
Those are about 10-15$ more than the ones listed with the bad gyro.
BUT it's AliX... seller's who don't know anything will list whatever specs they 1st find or outright list wrong specs for a sale knowing you can't return.
@@BendApparatus i sent it back to the seller and buy other one with the mpu6000 and works fine . Thanks for the reply
@@DaniPacha wait, so you found this exact board with an mpu6000?
Can you list the seller please? (No links just store name)
Any update? Did you solve the gyro issue?
Thanks for sharing. Nice that you included 25mm mounting in your frame. Could you have also added 25mm with 45 degree rotation? I like that too
it looks like its already 45, no?
By the way: what is a good alternative gyro for the mpu6000? I heard the bmi270 seems good with the right gyro filter settings. There was a video on that from chris rosser
There is also the ICM-40609-D which seems to be designed specifically for drones, but there are no FCs with it yet that I can find.
Would a bad gyro cause the quad to jump to full throttle suddenly once I hit 25% or so leadfinger. That was a fun landing, making it dance back and forth to keep speed down while dropping altitude and disarming into a bush to minimize damage...
It could be bad filtering. With air mode a bad tune can cause a quad to moon.
@@RecursionLabs it just started suddenly, ran a couple warm up packs, no crashing, brought it in to swap packs, on takeoff of 3rd pack is when it freaked. Checked for loose anything and that's not it. Put a preset tune on it and tried again but no help. Fc has black box but I haven't learned that part yet.
Hello, great information!
I'm not sure if had a look already, but they released a new version of this board with the BGA version of the F405, and keeping the ICM42.
Maybe this has been fixed after many negative feedbacks.
I sent them a mail to ask the same question. :-D
@@ZeroFPV Nice, have they replied to you yet?
@@erikvf7 No, they didn't. 😞
Thank you for sharing! I don’t understand how this can come to market lol
JHEMCU probably thought nothing about it, heard rumors of big manufacturers working with Betaflight to get the ICM-42688-p to work nicely and then they just slapped this chip onto an FC without any thinking or checking anything. It completely backfired and bit them in the ass because they obviously don't know what they are doing. They could have just asked the BF devs who would have told them that just switching the gyro chip without fixing the power line noise on the FC is a bad idea but they have to learn the hard way it seems.
thats what we're all wondering
I bought 2 FC’s HAKRCF722 mini 3 for INAV target MATEKF722SE since I have another two that are working fine. These new FC’s came with the new gyro ICM42688 instead of MPU6000. Result, INAV does not recognize this new gyros. I’m stuck in Betaflight. Let’s see how it flies…
How it flies finally? Is goos thasst gyro for you?
@@Edgar1991123 did not put it yet in a drone. I’m trying to make an INAV target for this new gyro.
I tried the HAKRCF7220, the rectangular 20x20 one on an apex 4" build. The gyro signal seems to be very noisy and has a pronounced resonance at 310 Hz, and I'm not sure if that's just my build or an actual gyro issue. Needed to use RPM filtering, 1x static LPF @250 Hz, and static notch 310 Hz 285 cutoff to get it to working nicely. The quad flies fine but I'm having trouble cleaning up propwash handling
Actually they provide since 17th July 2023 a firmware update to betaflight 4.4.x It flies much better now and I am able to increase the D values. I will let you know more
I've heard this from someone else who had a board, so its possible these are fine now. I'm going to try their newer version soon (BGA).
Have you tried the new Emax Avia 3.6" (?) props? I think they released yesterday with their new Hawk Apex bnfs, they look a lot beefier than the older props
If they just released them yesterday then how could I have tried them? :) They look a lot like the 3.5" Avans, which were bad, but I'd love to test them to see if they've improved the design.
@@RecursionLabs hahah I know they sent some quads out to reviewers so I thought u might’ve gotten your hands on a set. I haven’t even seen them for sale yet, but im looking forward to your testing.
hi sir what is firmware need to upload for the JHEMCU flight controller I tried beta flight its not supported
Betaflight for sure.
What is the best AIO that we can get right now for a 3.5inch build that works in your frames?
Hard to say. I'm up for pain and am trying to newer JHEMCU board to see if its better as it seems to allow for an MPU6000 if you have one to solder on worst case. That said if you get the 25x25 baseplate it'll take both 20x20 and 25.5x25.5 boards, and those are more available now.
@@RecursionLabs I really liked the old GHF420AIO with the MPU6000. Is the new board you mention above, the GHF420AIO-BGA? Have you tried it yet? If so, what are your thoughts, regards Richard
@@rsutherland106 I got it recently but have yet to try it on a build.
Any plans to have a top plate the fits the HDzero VTx?
I don't have a HDZero VTx to test, but would the 20x20 board not fit on the top plate?
@@RecursionLabs it is 34 x 34mm in size and have a 20x20 M3 hole pattern.
The current top plate I believe is for M2? Could drill it out but was wondering if the top plate could be made a touch wider so it would protect the VTx more instead of having some bits of the board exposed.
@@AlvinYeoh I could see about adding 20x20 holes into the wider plate made for 25x25 (walksnail) since that probably has the width you're looking for. As for widening them, couldn't you just use m2 screws? I use m2 screws in my Five33 stack which is made for m3.
@@RecursionLabs Could do that, should probably still be quite secure with some washers in.
But yeah having a 20x20 for the walksnail plate would probably work too!
@@AlvinYeoh A washer wouldn't be needed since you'd want to have a nylon nut on either side of the board which would act as a washer. I'll see what I can come up with.
well hell I can't get mine to power up with lipo but it will USB that's crazy
Sounds like an issue with the 5v regulator. Check to make sure you don't have solder balls shorting it out or anything. Best way to test is to put a multimeter in continuity mode on the 5v pad and ground and see if it's shorted.
It is so sad to hear this, I have been using (Jehmcu 405 pro) on all of my quads and have been recommending them. Hope they will not use this gyro on thei other AIO's
I just picked up "405PRO", ordered with BMI270 gyro, unfortunately they sent me with a gyro ICM42688 :(
Omg I can't belive I did the same mistake and ordered it with the icm42688 gyro. I was doing a try and error search for nearly one month with my custom build and couldn't believe when I saw the exact weird gyro blackbox log. I am new to this hobby and exchanged so much in hope to get it fixed... all this efforts worthless and the reason is a bad gyro product.... unbelievable....
Can you test fettec 35a aio
не работает osd на 3 uart на caddx vista ((
I'm having very similar issues with the JHEMCU GHF411AIO, which uses the same gyro... I'm super new to FPV, so I've been able to get the blackbox data but not read it like I see in your video. Here's a flight where you can see it gets pretty bad. That's with new props, making sure everything was super tight, etc. Again, a newb, so I might have missed something, but I don't think so. ua-cam.com/video/EF1pqRY_siA/v-deo.html
Which version of Betaflight are you running?
@@RecursionLabs Sorry, just saw this. It was the one that came with the FC, 4.3.1 according to the product page, but I'll check in BF tomorrow. Do you think that flashing to a newer version could help?
I uploaded the same video but with BF overlay, too ua-cam.com/video/coTCMW_MzQ8/v-deo.html
