I received No responses to multiple emails and voice messages throughout the whole period. So I’m a paleolithic archaeologist and my big focus is on stone tools, I think part of what fascinates me about these weapons is fact that this ancient technology is still being used. But a question is have is, in the field if your flint starts to become worn would a soldier retouch their flint to get the right surface back? Would they carry a tool for this or would something like one of loose bullets to the trick? Love these videos man, entertainment and experimental archaeology perfectly mixed together!

      Isn’t that where the word “skinflint” comes from? It means excessively frugal, suggesting it was doable but not normal or perceived as worth the effort.

    • @ColoursofGreen
      @ColoursofGreen 2 роки тому +1

      @@wierdalien1 From experience, much quicker to knap. tbh. Your turn screw works fine along the edge of the flint. To change flint you need the unscrew, remove flint (and not lose the lead grip) fumble for your flint from the pocket in the cartridge pouch), set the flint into the lead grip, hold in place as you screw down whilst making sure the edge of the flint is full on to the frizzen. In theory, you don't have the many flints (you're only issued with 3). I've know guys keep a flint going for sometime by simply knapping it back to life.

    • @ColoursofGreen
      @ColoursofGreen 2 роки тому

      They should have a turn-screw so as to be able to loosen the 'jaw screw' (the screw at the top of the lock that grips down onto the jaws that hold the flint). Drawing the cock to half-cock, the flint is easily accessible to be able to be tapped and knapped along it's edge. I can't imagine the ball itself would be of use as it's likely to be too soft, being made of lead.

Based upon "what if" ("If a frog had wings he wouldn't bump his ass.") a country decided modernize the Baker with percussion lock, or just flat out copy them. However, upon further research, (thanks to you and Chap for the motivation, by the way), I had no idea of how glacial the twist of Baker rifling was. (One turn in 120 inches... woof.) The fact that most rifles would have been worn out by the time Minie or Nessler balls came into being compounds my stupidity in asking a what if question. My apologies.
