I just wanted to say, it's really okay that you didn't get it till the end. Thats what makes this movie so rewatchable. You pick up on new things every single time. Yall should try some of Jordan Peeles movies like Get Out, Us, and Nope if you haven't already. Very, VERY good director/writer.

this movie was soooo disturbing in theaters but was phenomenally acted on everybody’s part. Fun fact: toni colette didn’t want to do no horror at all and was looking for comedy specifically but she read one page of the script and was immediately pulled in by the story. The scream alone of grief from the realization of her daughters demise was a performance that deserved an oscar.

peter was in complete shock .. he knew what happened, and he couldn’t even look back .. you start hearing him say “are you okay” under his breath .. he didn’t even put the gas on the way home he just took his foot off the brake .. and of course no older brother wants to tells his parents that he just accidentally decapitated his 13 year old sister so he just waited for them to notice which of course is awful .. but i don’t blame him, i wouldn’t be able to do it either. i think Alex Wolfe gave one of the best performances i’ve ever seen in that scene ..

That's the thing, they are supposed to be a heavily dysfunctional family. The first minutes we saw how they forget Charlie's epipen and don't even monitor what she eats. Then the mom send Charlie to a party she doesn't want to go to just to stop Peter from drinking.
The dad is supposed to be a therapist, but he can't even talk properly to his wife about her way of making miniatures of her trauma events.
So, yeah, I also wondered why Peter was in school so soon, and I simply concluded they thought he would be ok.

The whole 2nd half of the movie was to drive peter insane. The book says "most vulnerable host" which is peter.
Remember the cult knew peter was a replacement since Charlie/paimon was born. Peters torture was on purpose.

Another interesting detail I just noticed about Charlie's "grandma wanted me to be a boy": *Annie's* *brother* *(the* *one* *who* *self-unalived)* *was* *named* *Charles!* so he was also probably called "Charlie", indicating that, _maybe,_ it was grandma the one who chose the name for her granddaughter! (maybe she thought she'd be a boy and could name him "Charles" as well, but when she was born a girl she -or they- decided to keep the "Charlie" part and named her Charlotte instead).

  • @Hey_Jamie

11:30 the fact that both of you are still clueless this far in the movie is mind blowing. Literally no reason to be “lost”.

  • @user1927
    @user1927 11 місяців тому +22

I was also confused when I first watched this, after rewatching I noticed and understood more. Here's what I gathered. The grandmother was in a "cult" they were working to summon Paimon, and they stated that they who summons him get riches, (remember the picture of the grandmother smiling with coins raining down on her?). I the very beginning when the mom was at the meeting, she mentioned that her brother had schizophrenia and claimed their mother was "trying to put people in him", that leads me to believe that he didn't have schizophrenia and the mother was trying to put "people" in him. That failed so she moved on to her daughter's children. I don't think the mom knew about her mom. She said she wanted her son but she "gave her Charlie". I think that was just foreshadowing but the mom just knew her mother to be too overbearing and controlling.
If you rewatch and pay attention to her diagrams there are clues there.
In one scene the mom was in the bed trying to breastfeed her baby (who I presume to be Charlie), and the grandmother was standing over her with her boob out too like she was trying to feed the baby herself. I think that shows what the mom meant when she "sank her hooks in her" (Charlie), it's like that represents how the grandmother clung to Charlie and tried to "raise" her. We now know that was because Paimon was inside of her. BTW Paimon is reincarnated as Charlie, she didn't know her true identity until they told "her" at the end.
I don't know why they weren't able to put Paimon in the son at first, I think it may have partially been to the mother keeping the grandmother away from her son.
But Paimon was to be in a male body (like what the grandmother tried with her son, the "schizophrenic" brother) This was first alluded too when Charlie said her grandma said she should've been a boy. The grandmother died but she spirit was still active, and the others in the "cult" continued the rituals. They are the reason Charlie died, the needed to free Paimon's spirit from the girl's body.
This is when Jonne (however you spell her name, I'll call her J) came into the picture, all of the things havening to the family was a part of the plan. J lured the mom in and convinced her to "speak to Charlie", when she showed the mom her grandson in the seance I don't think that was actually her grandson, I think everything she said was a lie to trap her into doing the ritual and we saw how that played out. The mother was also not crazy, she has suffered immensely in her life and is grieving, and unbeknownst to her, cursed by J and her own mother. She used her diagrams as a way to try to process all of the tragedy in her life
After she called everyone done to talk to Charlie she got possessed by an entity, this is also the cult's doing. The scene where J was yelling at the son at his school, she was trying to "expel him". Remember, she told him to leave, and "get out", they needed his spirit out of the body so they can put Charlie/Paimon inside. When the son jumped from the treehouse you could see his spirit leave and that golden orb that entered his body was Charlie/Paimon.
Ok I think that pretty much summed it up.

It was really stressful seeing you guys constantly checking how far into the movie you had gotten and complaining about not understanding, when really you just had to look at it, and think about the characters.
Peter was traumatized and in shock, his mother obviously blamed him (although the blame for why Charlie was at the party was his) and the father was trying to protect his son, but to understand her. Add to the mix the demonic possession and everything that was said about the family and its members (grandmother, brother, etc.) and that's it

So many people gave this movie so much hate and it's because they're focusing too much on the obvious things than the more important, unsettling things happening in the background and then talking through the parts that show what just happened... You two missed SO much of what was happening, it actually frustrated me a little, lol.

Really hanging on to that insanity hypothesis right up to the bitter end, huh? Paimon was in Charlie, then tried to possess Peter (face smashing scene) but it didn't work because he was not vulnerable enough yet, and hadn't been involved directly in the rituals. Paimon tricks the Mom into thinking burning the book will burn her, only to have it burn her husband in front of her, thus making her vulnerable enough to be possessed. Of course Paimon still wanted a male body, so he used the Mother to terrorize Peter sufficiently so that he could be possessed instead.

Charlies grandmother and their cult planned all of this, from the very beginning they wanted Peter. Remember when Charlie said her granny wanted her to be a male it was because they need a male body that can possessed the said king of hell thats why the mother said she tried to stop peter from being born because she knows what her mom's trying to do ( they did it too with her father and schizophrenic brother, thats what he meant when he said they were trying to put people IN HIM) but then Charlie came so she gave Charlie to granny and left with peter and her husband until granny died. The cult people is all over town their logo is everywhere even in the post where Charlie hit her head I believe some of peter's schoolmates are also in the cult and the party and charlie dying was a set up coz they needed a male with vulnerable mind for the possession.

It's a great movie just...harrowing. I found it hard to deal with. I have watched it more than once but I always pick up something new. Even just watching this reaction I realised Joan first said 'my son died' then targeted her again and son 'oh I got to talk to my grandson'. She changed her story cause it wasnt true. They kept trying to manipulate her to say words to bring...a spirit in. Annie thought it was Charlie and that she was talking to Charlie but wasn't. Annie was so grief stricken that she was easy to manipulate. Hereditary has a few meanings I think...generational trauma, hereditary mental illness, toxic family dynamics and inability to communicate with eachother. I'm not that smart I didn't come up with those theories on my own...I had to like go and watch movie breakdowns to work out what was happening. It's just...its beautifully shot and well acted but enjoyable is a...strong word for this one.

Pro tips...go back to the scene, the mom's work table, watch the blue bottle! The director did Midsonmar as well. It's good but I just kinda didn't buy the premise, so I wasn't as impressed. This movie here, I would put up with The Thing, Exorcist, the shining, a few others. How Toni Collette didn't win an Oscar for this, is beyond me! A bit of horror truth, when he smashed his face in the desk, he was supposed to hit padding but didn't. His face looking all dislocated, was real! Also Peter's first class, is the same subject from the original Holloween, and the trailer for this came out the same day, the Halloween reboot did!😮😮😮Another callback is during their seance, the clock stops, callback to exorcist! What was hereditary in this family wasn't mental illness, it was Grandma and proly those before her, driving family members insane, with their satanic/cult worship! Charlie was already possessed, represented by the clicks. Heard while she was alive, and after she died, BEFORE the seance. I would say, joan tried sacrificing her son and grandson. Either they killed themselves, or she killed them. Seems if Paimon is not happy with a body it is in, it has to die and be beheaded, so paimon can leave the body, i say it happened to dear old grandma, and definitely happened to Annie and Charlie! I just noticed a weird parallel...when the dad gets charlie from the treehouse to go to the funeral, she standing up in the corner, and the camera view is from below slightly like shes twisting and floating!!!! In the almost final scenes, the mom is up in the corner of charlies room then floats away, then is up in the corner, above peter, as he's looking at his burned dad!😮. Biblically speaking, u NEVER want to conjure someone who is dead...this NEVER goes well! King Saul conjured the spirit of the profit, and all went downhill real fast!

At 13:31 Annie takes a piece of black herb out of her mouth. At first it's not clear what it could mean, until you get to the cl¡max of the moviem where you can see, in the background, a photo of Grandma Ellen giving Charlie dark herbs in her milk bottle, probably intended to aid Paimon's possession of her. This could indicate that Joan was _also_ giving Annie the same s4tan¡c herbs mixed with her tea, to make her more open to the d3moniac influence of Paimon.

    "What the f**k?"
    Definitely sums up this movie.
Who hurt you, Ari Aster? 😅
Toni Collette in this one and Florence Pugh in Midsomer were amazing.

I think it’s rude to assume that everyone’s perception is the same and should catch on the same way another would. Stop ✋🏾 putting pressure on others to be the same as you! Individuality please. Tf
