  • Enjoy this montage showcasing a celebration of love and kūpuna vitality as the 52nd Senior Valentines Dance returned to the Neal S. Blaisdell Exhibition Hall on Tuesday Feb. 7, 2023!
The free event was open to the public, including participants of all ages. The highlight of the event were our kūpuna dancers, many of whom represent the 32 Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Senior Clubs from around O‘ahu.
Kicking off the festivities was a melodious mix of tunes from the fabled Royal Hawaiian Band, the only municipal band in the country. Followed by DPR Senior Club representatives joining a cast of VIP’s, including Mayor Rick Blangiardi, his cabinet, and some local celebrities, during the opening ceremony. Then we enjoyed plenty of dancing opportunities with ballroom hits, line dancing, and plenty of pop music all with the theme of a “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.”
This was the first time the event returned to the Blaisdell since 2020. Back then, it was one of the last DPR events before pandemic restrictions took effect. In 2021 the event went virtual with videos of song performances and slideshows, still available on our UA-cam Channel. In 2022, DPR held an outdoor Senior Valentine Walk at Kaka‘ako Waterfront Park.
Mahalo to all of the attendees and the event sponsor, Bank of Hawai‘i.
Launched in 1969, the Valentines Dance is one of many special events organized by the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation’s Senior Division. For more information about our kūpuna programs, please visit the division’s dedicated website: bit.ly/oahuseniors
