8:55 "I don't know who this guy is. Is he even famous?" LOL!!! I'm in my 60s so you saying this was a real LOL moment for me!!! This is Frankie Avalon who was a HUGE clean-cut star in the 1950s, famous for all his beach party movies with Annette Funicello, who was also very clean-cut. Frankie was not a star in my generation but I grew up watching his beach party movies on TV as a kid. Having Frankie Avalon do the roll of the Teen Angel was a genius move on the part of the producers.
You asked if John Travolta did his own signing. The answer is yes. All the actors did their own signing.
You keep saying everyone looks old. Well in actual fact the actors were all adults. But you must understand that this is happening in the mid 1950s and back then EVERYONE looked old.

Lol thanks for explaining who he is, I knew it was going over my head. And I knew Olivia was an actual singer, was just surprised John was too cause he sounds really good and yes they looked old but even more so than regular lol although movies always cast older actors to play HS students so I didn’t mind it much

You might not be aware, but this was a very successful play before it was made into the movie. At one point it was the longest running play in Broadway history. While they changed some things to make it work as a movie (especially making Sandy Australian to accommodate ONJ's Aussie accent), they tried to stay as faithful to play whenever possible. The only songs that were not in the play were the title song (written by Barry Gibb at the height of the Saturday Night Fever phenomenon), Hopelessly Devoted To You (ONJ had it in her contract that she got a solo), Sandy, and You're The One That I Want. HDTY and YTOTIW were both written by ONJ's song writer/producer, John Farrrar, and HDTY was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song. A lot of the actors in the movie were huge stars in the fifties, an intentional nod to television/cinematic history. Eve Arden (Principal McGee), Sid Ceasar (Coach Calhoun), Vince Fontaine (Ed Byrnes), and Teen Angel (Frankie Avalon) were all huge stars from the fifties. Even the theme song was sung by Frankie Valli, another huge star from that era. Didi Conn, who played Frenchy, said she was literally drooling while they filmed Beauty School Dropout, because she had such a huge crush on Frankie Avalon as a kid, lol. This movie, minor flaws and all, is such a joy, that it has remained one of the most beloved movies of all time. Even 42 years later, Grease sing-a-longs are common place (I went to one at the Hollywood Bowl about five years ago). ONJ auctioned her jacket and pants from the end of the movie last year for her cancer hospital in Australia for nearly half a million dollars. The billionaire who bought the jacket then gifted it back to her with the request that it remain on permanent display at the ONJ Cancer Wellness and Research Center. Grease will always be the word!

Wow thanks for all this info. I had no clue! I did 0 research on it, just wanted to go in blind and enjoy the experience and I did. It’s one of my fave musicals now and have rewatched it a bunch

I just don't get this thing with young viewers now about opening credits to older movies "going on too long." For one thing, it gives the movie a musical overture. And for another thing, it helps to set the mood. Get a freaking attention span, kids!

Newsflash. Musicals are movies with a series of musical numbers that are largely unnecessary. Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee and Beauty School Drop Out establish each characters personality without more spoken exposition. Rizzo IS a mean girl secretly jealous of Sandys innocence and Frenchy is lost about her future and what it holds for her. She’s also the reason Sandy’s there at all.

No it was not bullshit with the Rizzo being pregnant story. For a teenage girl to watch this in a movie was great. Be careful to not become pregnant with the wrong guy!

Yes Travolta is singing in this.

Bro, saying that the finale was nothing but nonsense words is missing the point. The songs lyrics are based off of the background vocal sounds used in Doo-wop music. Before you watch Grease, you should have at least a basic understanding of Rock 'n' Roll history and pop-culture of the late 1950's.

I saw this as an elementary school age kid when it came out so alot of the adult humor and song lyrics went over my head at the time. I just knew I loved the music because it was fun to hear as a child.
Now, for your critique of the Rizzo/Kinickie subplot, IMO, it was to show the audience that Rizzo is just a BS'r for her tough leader image and slept around in her misguided quest to find someone to love her. ie, she's really a good girl acting badly. I believe that because she's shown (only to the audience) as being sensitive.
And Frenchie's 'unnecessary' song with the Angels is showing us her conflict with dropping out of school only to be failing at life. And the male Angel was Frankie Avalon, a 1950's teen idol. Still famous at the time of filming.
Subplots in movies were far more common until recent years. It still happens just not as frequently. It keeps the audience feeling like they're getting more insight into why the main characters surround themselves with the company they keep. Those subplots flesh out the side characters. Haven't you ever wondered why some people hang out with certain people? Or have you yourself ever been questioned in your choice of friends? This method in films let's you see what the main character sees so that then you can understand their choices.
You're of the 3 minute attention span of today's youth so I don't fault you in any way.

Why would it be a "worst case scenario " for a teenage High School girl in the 1950's to not get pregnant, at a time 15 years before women (or girls) had no choice but to carry the child, get an illegal abortion or use a coat hanger???? It was great news because they obviously weren't ready.
Even in the 1970's, when I grew up, all of my friends that got their girlfriend pregnant got divorced or broke up shortly thereafter, and the girl was left raising the child.
Not to mention the gruesome "coat hanger" abortion method, and I knew teenaged girl that did that too.
    Incredibly strange commentary.

I agree. I think he doesn't get how story telling works. Characters can't start the movie already knowing everything. They start off with some flaws and need to go on a journey to grow. Riz was promiscuous and seemed really mean. We learned that she is just insecure and she learned that she needs to be careful who she hooks up with and to use protection.
Even if the consequences didn't last the lesson she learned did.

    • @Ayaforshort

This was sooo interesting though, I hadn't thought about this being before abortion was safe.

I forgot how gorgeous she was... DAMN!
I'm sorry but I think you missed ALL or most of the life lessons in this film... There were widely contrasting attitudes of each character and their life choices and showing consequences of those choices. You seemed to have missed all of it except Travolta & Newton-John's characters.

YOU are not the best judge of musicals, the 50's, nor movies. Just because you do not understand the mentality and history of that time does not mean you are the best judge of what scenes or parts is a "waste of time". GEE!

You know how you said it was bad that they made such a big deal of her possible pregnancy for it to be false? Well it was done that way intentionally she had sex then skipped her next period then rumours start to spread and those rumours ruined her school life because of people giving her side eyes

Don't you know about UA-cam copyright laws? If he played an entire song he's get a copyright strike so fast. It's not allowed.
If you want to watch the song I'd suggest rewatching the movie, it would be better use of your time than being rude and ignorant online. 🙄

I think you might appreciate the subplots more on rewatchings. The movie would be so boring if there was only an A storyline. You'd be asking why there are so many characters in the movie and why they aren't more developed. Basically if they made the changes you are suggesting there would be 2 characters and they'd sing every song. 😴

when i first watched grease, i also thought that the opening sequence was too long and... boring(?). though now, i vibe with the song and i even rewatch the movie just for the opening sequence and a few of the musical numbers.
