- If you’re new here, welcome! My name is Krysta and I’m a Canadian thru hiker. I have completed 2 thru hikes, the 950 km Great Divide Trail in Canada and the 2,200 km Croatian Long Distance Trail in Croatia. So, I’ve thru hiked a total of 3,150 km in the last 3 years.
As a new thru hiker, I made quite a few mistakes, but these are my top 6. I will (hopefully) never be making these mistakes again and I hope I can help you avoid making the same ones.
Also, how beautiful is Meteora?? It is a tourist destination in Greece, but honestly, well worth a visit!

Very cool that you lived here! Which region were you in? Meteora is definitely a special place. I also rode around on a rented scooter, which was another very fun way to see the area.

Meteora is definitely one of the most magical places in Greece…I keep my MSR in the car, use Grayl and Katedyn be free depending on where we are going

Get either the Sawyer Squeeze or the Platypus QuickDraw. With either of them also get the CNOC 2 litre bag for collecting and holding the dirty water. The bags that come with the Sawyer are known to fail when squeezed so I use them as lightweight extra water storage. If you get the Squeeze then also buy the blue adapter ring as it makes filtering easier whether it be squeezing to filter and it allows a hang to filter configurations. I have a hack to make a screw cap for the dirty end of the Squeeze if you’re interested. Justin Outdoors used the BeFree for the first part of his GDT hike and it failed. He switched to the Platypus QuickDraw and it worked well for him. I use the Sawyer when I go kayak camping since it has the components for hanging to filter. I use my Platypus when backpacking or the Sawyer depending on how I will be filtering water. The Platypus is sold at MEC so subject to its good warranty. I got my squeeze on Amazon and it’s supposed to have a lifetime warranty too.
I can second the Sawyer squeeze with CNOC 2 litre bag and blue adapter ring, this is the system we now use and we've been super happy with it. It's a game changer, especially if you're going from the old style pump filters!

HydroBlu is an ounce lighter than Sawyer, is almost as fast, has adapters built-in and end-caps built-in. CNOC dirty-water bag is worth its 3oz, because it can be filled from the wide-mouth top.

Metora - what a beautiful place! Wow! As far as the water bottle, I have a 900 ml Active Survivor Filtration Bottle which is supposed to filter fresh tasting water from any lake, river, stream or municipal tap. One filter can replace 426 water bottles and has a 100 gallon lifespan. It is very light. Removes heavy metals, chemicals +VOC, bacteria, parasites. While I haven't used it yet, I am taking it on my trip to Egypt in January. I bought it off Amazon. Great tips, by the way. Sometimes experience is the best teacher. Take care.
