To germinate snaps put seed in refrigerator for a few days then put in pot and grow under lights but no heat mat. Cool with light. I have excellent germination! If you cover the seed just a very light sprinkling of vermiculite.
Dusty miller is easy to germinate if you don’t cover the seed. I put on a heat mat with a dome under lights. If you haven’t tried germinating this way just some info for you. Happy Gardening, I’m enjoying your videos!
Wow, your seedlings are so compact and stocky, not at all stretched! I must definitely invest in some LED lights to go above my seedlings, as they’re terribly thin and tall - not good!
A good light definitely makes a huge difference.
Snapdragons do amazing in winter sowing. Maybe try the same freezing technique with the snapdragons and then plant them.
Great idea! I have some out there already in bins. Wish me luck!
Way to go!! Exciting.
Wow. Looks amazing! Great tips here too!
I always feel like I need to start more seeds when I watch your videos!🤣💖🥰
I know the feeling friend! lol
I started some things a little too early, but these crazy temperatures have been warm enough for me to plant them out in the garden beds. I have plastic ready if I need to cover them. The next round of cold hardy annual flowers went out to harden off yesterday. We’ve had these patterns with 70 degree days that then bring rain and a downhill slide to cool temperatures and it seems to be good for hardening off. Now to think about presprouting peas and planting out! Things are speeding up! Exciting!
VERY exciting!
Don’t worry about the red velvet coleus. I’ve been growing them for a few years now, and they are deceiving as seedlings. You won’t see the change until they get bigger.. trust me, you’re going to love them ❤.
This comment makes me so excited about them! :)
Lovely seedlings!!
My dusty miller "silver dust" is up, but small, and my "new look" hasn't come up yet (leftover seeds from last yr). It's been about three weeks. Also, my foxglove are small. And a lot of petunias are yet to come up too. My snap dragons are tiny, if up. I think a lot of those varieties are just really slowwww.
I also put some snaps and foxglove in winter sowing for later blooms, since they both are cold hardy.
I already gave up on my dusty miller, its gonna have to be a different year for them.
Excited to see your progress! I have not even started yet...My average last frost date is May 15 and we typically get a Mother's day snow/hard freeze. My neighbors and I do not plant out our tomatoes until Memorial day. We also recently adopted a dog who loves to mess with dirt. He disassembled all my winter sowing containers last week...Best wishes to your seedlings and garden, as always. And wish me luck too!
Oh no! I remember I had to work with out dog when we first got him to teach him not to go into our beds, they learn quickly if you keep on reminding them.
Good thing that dog is cute, or would be in Big trouble!
@@MissBetsyLu Aren't they all manipulating us with their cuteness. 🙄
@@SoilandMargaritas We definitely have to do the training. Thank you!
Hello my garden friend. I started some dusty miller in my first time ever winter sowing on Feb. 6 here in northeast In. zone 6. No germination either, but like you I will wait to see what happens. I do have germination on other seeds I started. I am excited just to see some green in all this rainy cold cloudy and deceiving weather. Usually I just wait to direct sow but I figured I get a head start on things I would buy later in the big box stores and save some money for more important things like...MORE PLANTS! 😆😆😆Did all of your hydrangeas start small? Do you purchase perennials from the clearance rack at Lowes or other big box stores, does anyone else do this? It has saved me so much money! Have a great growing season everyone!
Yes! I do it all! I buy small plants and plants from the clearance aisle too!
Loved the update! Thank you. LOL on the end with the thumbnails !!
Glad you liked it!
Thanks for sharing Roxana! They are looking great!
Thank you!
Your coleus seedlings are the cutest! Can’t wait to see them grow!
Thanks so much! 😊They are darlings!
Such a wonderful channel. Thank you for your demos and lectures. I'm in zone 5 so I can appreciate all your work to produce these plants and videos.
You're very welcome!
This is my first year starting my garden from seed. Your videos have been so helpful. These warm days here in Indy have given me planting fever. I am running out of indoor space. C'mon May! 😂
Right?! Come on Spring! Did you see the highs for tomorrow?
Oh that's such a good idea for the Dahlias! I think I'm going to try that
Hi Roxana! They are beautiful. Why is it so satisfying to grow seedlings? It just is.
Also FYI, I tried my broccoli microgreens. OMG!! The weights are so important! Weights on the entire surface!!! I have a big hole in the middle due to uneven weights.
Weights are VERY important! It’s such a fast project microgreens!
These are just beautiful seedlings❤ and those dahlia’s have tons of roots hanging out the open tray!
Right?!! I’m so excited!
Looking good! I see a lot of growth that is so exciting. I'm trying 4 different Perennial Flower seeds in the Freezer! 24 hrs, Just took them out yesterday, I started my Snap Dragons in a clear covered container outside in Spring last year and they did great. I'm going to start them a little earlier this year- the same way.Sprinkle them on top of damp potting soil and don't cover them. They need light but not heat. I did Petunias and Coleus the same way. They can take a cold start. All in one long (under the bed kind) storage container. On a table. Even in the snow.
your garden is going to be amazing this year
Thank you so much! I cannot wait!
I love those colorful containers, thanks for the info on all the varieties! 😃
You are so welcome! I hope this helps!
Thanks for the update, great job and very inspirational 💕
When I sow snapdragon seeds outside they do much better. They like cool weather.
Thank you!
Hey Roxana! Try top spray on the Snapdragons until you get more germination then bottom water. I also keep mine uncovered and close to the light until they get a bit taller 🌱
Thank you!
I struggle with foxglove too. I had one come back and I weeded it out, I didn't realize until a few days later hehehe ooops
I am in zone 7a and the weather changes too much so I haven't started anything as yet but you are really motivating me to do so. I can't wait to see how your garden turns out.
Thank you so much Viv!
Hi Roxanna, two things to try with your snapdragons, freeze the seeds (maybe you can put that whole container in the freezer) and no heat mat. They take a long time to germinate so does dusty miller.
I thought about this for snapdragons, I will definitely try this with my containers I have, and yes, dusty miller has been there over a month.. SO over it!
Looking great Roxana. Love it 😍
Thank you!
Things look wonderful! I have had poor results with snapdragons until this year. I tried soil blocking some and my regular way with some. The soil blocking ones took off and I have already pinched off the tops (started end of Jan). Maybe their roots like the extra air circulation? I love your sweet little coleus plants. I will try those next year. Thanks for everything - I learn so much from you. ❤️🌸
I am going to try a couple of different things for sure, Thank you!
Lots of pretty seedlings!! 💚 I winter sowed snapdragon seeds last year and they sprouted like crazy, maybe try them out with that method. 🤷♀️
I have some out there already! Thank you!
I had my snaps in the tray with everything else and they sat on the heat mat and sprouted fine. I've also had good luck with winter sowing. Maybe just stuck the container outside in a clear bin for a few days and then bring inside?
My lettuce spinach cilantro are very slow growing outside. My kale never germinated and my petunias are tiny. But I’m happy to say that I harvested beets and arugula already. This is my first year and I’m still learning but that’s OK. I’ll take what I get. Like you say it is what it is. !!!!!
It’s a lot of practice and failure and learning what the plants like
Hey Roxana! Love seeing how all your seedlings are doing. I had the same issue with snapdragons until I realized that they want cool temps to germinate. I know you've talked about how warm your seed room is, so maybe it's just too hot for them in there, especially on top of a heat mat as well? I could totally be wrong, but just thought I'd throw that out there. The best success I had germinating snapdragon seeds, I didn't even put them on a heat mat. I just put a humidity dome on and let them do their thing. I'm no pro, but just thought I'd see if that might help you. Thanks for sharing all you do!
I agree! I do t use Hera mata because my room is already toasty, I’m gonna try a few different things and hopefully 🤞🏼
They are doing amazing 🍃🌺🍃
Thank you! I cannot wait!
Ugh, I should have started geraniums earlier, did mine 2/18. They are looking good though. What is really slow is Non Stop Begonias. Read that they are slow-should have start a year ago, lol.
This is the first year I’ve Ever had so many problems; mildew, aphids and gnats. I’m using air pruning pots like yours. I’m thinking that a lower tray may beneficial for air movement. One problem may be that I used a bag of Promix that was open out in the shed. So I’m hand picking, sprayed Neem oil, tried soap spray and have sticky traps-we’ll see.
Your starts look great!
I try getting the newest cleanest soil for growing indoors, that way the fungus gnats don’t show up too early
They all look amazing
Thank you!
My snapdragons really responded well with soil blocks. I think In was able to control the moisture, sometimes cells hold on to too much moisture. I actually was very successful growing rosemary in cell blocks as well. Have you tried soil blocking?
I have tried soil blocking, it just wasn't for me.
Foxgloves need cold , put those in your fridge for a couple weeks , but they do better being winter sowed outside
Good luck
I have a set of them outside as well, either way I am getting some :)
Ya quiero mirar las flores de los geranios.😊
Haber que color me salen!
Just found your channel,,I have some geraniums seeded out I guess I need to up pot them to iam in zone 8b and my last frost date is also ap April 14
Good luck Val!
Your coleus babies were so cute last year I had to grow some too. I'm a huge fan of most varieties but found a couple to try. I wonder if your snaps are too warm? Do you have a fan in your room? It can help cool it down a little and will make seedlings stronger. Hope you next batch grows really well!
I have 2 fans going, hoping for better results this time around.
Ugh, my snapdragons are the same the last couple years. They germinate and then stay tiny forever. I got nice lights this year so I'll try one last time but if they do the same I'm giving up lol.
I ordered different seeds from a different provider… im gonna try one more time before I give up on them this year!
You have the best looking seedlings on you tube bar none I’m going to try the 24 hour freeze for lavender and snapdragons. What other flowers do you recommend for your quick freeze? Scabiosa?
Anything that needs cold stratification, it will mention that on the package, scabiosa for sure
Yayyy u did it this time. Did u make any special task to germinate eucalyptus?
Im seeing you video and i succeed to germinate my canna, moringa and wing bean too.
I didn't! I was able to grab seeds from Johnnys so maybe the quality of the seeds was a lot better this time.
Where did you find those colourful trays? I love them!

Hi Roxina I love your channel. Do you use grow lights and heat mat for your dahlias thank you
Hi! LED lights and no heat mat, my room is very warm!
Such a great video. Do you think the snaps need seed staring mix as opposed to potting mix maybe? I’m about to start mine and I will let you know if they grow in seed starting mix….. wish me luck 😂😂
I honestly don't know, I did sifted the soil I used, it is VERY close to seed starting mix so I am not really sure what happened there... Good luck with yours!
@@SoilandMargaritas it’s always such a guessing game isn’t it? I will definitely keep you posted if by any miracle mine sprout 😂
Love the video. I've learned so much from you. Question: do you grow broccoli? I'm trying to figure out if I should pot up my broccoli. They are getting pretty big and I think they might be outgrowing my 6 cell trays (the same ones you have). Your seedlings look amazing and I love how you grow a lot of flowers not only veggies. I just started strawflower and scabiosa the other day. Fingers crossed I can get some to actually plant out. I'm having fun with the 30 day story challenge too. Thanks for sharing:)
When can you plant them outside? Remember, they handle the cold very well so you could pot slowly bring them out (hardening off) and when they are ok to be fully outside you can just plant them.
@@SoilandMargaritas Thank you. Im in a new for me Zone, 7A but in New England cape cod so Im all confused. Supposedly my last frost is 4/30 but Im having a hard time wrapping my head around that. I'm used to having a much later date.
@@capecodcottagegarden accuweather reported that east coast is getting spring 3 weeks early. Be ready to cover them if you set them out. We use milk jugs, ect with bottoms cut out and uncapped for early protection. If freezing recap.
@@dustyflats3832 Thank you so much! That would be amazing. I'm so ready for spring. Its beautiful here today so going outside to attempt to build my garden fence...another first for me. Thanks again and good tip about the milk jug :)
Did I miss a video about tomato seeds? I didn’t see any in this video.
I haven’t started my tomatoes… end of March -ish
My friend had the same problem with her snapdragon seeds last year- possible overwatering or quality of potting mix or they dont like heat pad? Anyway, she went ahead and planted them out in the garden when they were TINY... and they took off out there when planted in the ground!! I planted my snap seeds around the same time as you and mine already are around 3 inches tall woth 2 or 3 sets of leaves. I have a self watering seed starting kit (with a wick pad) where I just refill the bottom reservoir when empty and they are under lights for 12 hours each day. Have not fertilized. I dont know if any if this info helps but I hope so!! Good luck!!
Thank you! I wonder if my room is just too warm for them, everything else loves it here but I snaps just don't do well for some reason. Fingers cross for my next batch!
My foxgloves are also not foxgloving 🤷🏽♀️ 😫
:( I am sorry friend! Welcome to the club!
Omg the thumbnail attempts hehehege I do this too it's so hard hehehe 😆
I know! I always forget to do this, I think about it when I am editing the video, I am trying to do better this year LOL
@@SoilandMargaritas same soo many of mine are just still shots that's aren't too blurry, or making a weird face hehe.
Be intentional. Without feeling silly.
oops one more question...where did you get those mini garden tools? I would love to get some. Thank you:)
I got a set from amazon, they are for succulents I think, so darn cute!
@@SoilandMargaritas Ok thanks. Ill see if I can find them :)
Roxana I sent you an email ( subject snapdragons) with pictures…….. they sprouted in 3 days! So if I could do it, you definitely can too! 🌷🌷🌷
I JUST saw it… lucky!!!! I am trying again! 😩😩😩 where did you get the seeds from?
Weird. Don’t know what’s up with your snapdragons. Maybe I just have beginner’s luck since it’s only the second time I’ve grown them 🙃 They are amazing when they work. But I think I might have pinched too soon… oh well.
Is always something right?! I honestly don't know, I am trying to troubleshoot that this year, we will see.
My last frost isn't until may 30th 😭😭
You have plenty of time to start everything here :)
🌱🪴🌱EXCITING 🌱🪴🌱
Right!?! Slowly we are getting there 🌿
