The Sorrow on the Hills

- Here is my second original song, “The Sorrow On The Hills”.
I have felt so inadequate at writing lyrics of my own for as long as I can remember, which is what prevented me from venturing into songwriting so far... but following my first attempt using Yeats’s words, I decided to give it a go. Most of the lyrics came to me in the night in about 30min. Crafting the melody took longer. The song is kind of a romanticised tribute to a friend/former lover I lost a couple of months ago, sung through the lens of folk poetry, imagery and music.
Some of the harmonies and lilts reference my favourite folk song “She Moved Through The Fair”, and the intro is a nod to one of my favourite Arias (let’s see who will guess right).
Lyrics:
Oh I hear such sorrow
In the mournful breeze
Running o’er the hills
Where my true love once roamed
How I long for the gaze
Of his doting eyes
And the warm embrace
Of his loving arms
Chorus:
Will I roam again
In the callow mist
Of love ever young
And forever so blissed
Or will I e’r remain
Lost upon the shore
Longing for the day
I shall join him once more
Ever since the day
Upon the raging waves
Wild winds tore him away
To some lone ocean graves
My young heart grew old
And my eyes grew cold
To the mere glance
Of another romance
(Chorus repeat)
You have a beautiful soft voice in ways with powerful harmonics I'm sure Loreena herself would appreciate :) xx
