The island has been a resort since Roman times, when the emperor Tiberius built Villa Jovis, a fabulous cliff-top palace a thousand feet above the sea. From the late 1800s, Capri was the haunt of artists, composers, and writers. In the 20th century it was discovered by the wealthy, who built large homes on the hillsides overlooking the blue-green waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
