Wow! I just became acquainted with this song and have listened to various interpretations on youTube. Next to the Martin Short version (1985 Special) Ms. Cook slays! Beautiful. I will search out more of her stuff. Thanks SO much for putting this out there. I have subscribed. Please listen to: Rufus Wainwright's version - very passionate, and rubato - Judy Garland, and , especially, Martin Short. Shirley Bassey not too shabby either.
Dear poster and comment person: Wow, as a long-time fan of this incredible song, you've now given me some real musical homework. Apart from Rufus' version, which I honestly forgot, Judy's was always the lodestone for me. Now this!!! Holy Cow!!! Thanks. Respectfully, CARL D. BIRMAN from Albany, NY. Cheers to all.
I went ahead and listened to all of the above referenced performances of this classic song, and I have to say I think Shirley Bassey’s is the best by far. Similar to Garland’s in its intense emotionality, Bassey’s voice is more rich and beautiful in its tone, and her vocal control is extraordinary. She ends the song on an exquisite note that leaves me weeping at its sheer beauty almost every time I hear it.
I saw this extraordinary woman perform twice, from the second row. Vocals and feelings and phrasing like no other.
Exquisite
❤️

Sarah Brightman's version is my favourite. Barbara's is right up there.

@@ericgen94947 I love those too. But, it's Barbara Cook's that calls forth tears every time I hear it.
