I am glad you made a video of this! I am the random guy who said hi with his lady friend and daughter at Chicken Bridge that day. Thanks for saying hi, my daughter was very excited to meet a UA-camr. I am hoping her seeing your son kayaking will give her more confidence to get into the sport. Thanks again for taking the time to make these videos. Hope to see you on the river some time!
@@RiverKingsKayak Awe thanks man! I don't have an account but my girlfriend will hit you up. Side note we just got back from doing this same section and had a blast!
I managed to find time to get out today to paddle my local trickle. It's usually called a river but rivers are supposed to have water in them. Good to you're getting out on the water in winter Pete.
Thanks Justin! I have been following your updates lately. Man, what a memorable summer - but not in a good way. I hate you are having to spend your paddling season this way! May you be blessed with a lot of rain - rain that can fix both situations!
Thanks Again...great pointers...like, the paddle leash NOT being attached to the person...the way to tie off a boat for a rescue...(don't get the pizza)...I never get tired of your vids...look forward to them...
Another good day on the water Pete with a little instruction, lessons learned and good times. 12 stones is right on and the forgotten key deal oh yes been there. Thanks for sharing.
Good video! You shared some really good info. with the rescue and not paddling fast through a rapid. I had convinced myself over the years that I needed to paddle fast and hard through a rapid to maintain control and now I know better, after thinking about it all make sense. Looked like a fun trip even with the set backs!
Thanks KW! So much of kayaking is counter-intuitive. I never really looked at the set backs as set backs. They were just part of the trip. Swims are really not that big a deal in kayaking. The swimmer bell just came about as it means so much to the RK guys to not be that guy...LOL. So I just went with it. Swims happen all the time in whitewater kayaking! Especially when folks are on the front side of the skillset. We had a blast!
Love the video and the instructional tips. Got to get me one of those white water kayaks, they look like fun. We went down the Tuckasegee last summer a couple times in an inflatable on those class 2's and had a ball. I enjoy being on flat water, but some rivers are down right boring.
It's awesome that you share your love of paddling and experience with novice paddlers. I know having an experienced paddler with them boosted both their confidence and enjoyment levels!! Well done, Pete!! 👍
Thanks Southern Paddler! I love teaching and I love kayaking. AND, I was once starting out and benefited from good paddlers like Bev Bryant, John Hall, Mike Covey and Edgar Peck that took me and my friend Kevin Ratliff under their wing and spent a lot of time to get us up to speed and make sure we were getting down the river safely. I figure we should all do the same.
Pete, that was the most fun I've had in a really long time. Thanks to Mike, Charlie and you for getting me over the nervousness of it and getting me going. Your instruction made it easy. Me and the guys already planning next trip, and whenever you want or need another boat to go with I'm not far from ya and I'll paddle with ya anytime 👍
Awesome video! My buddy Turtle Head Tommy did the same thing with leaving his keys in my truck (back at the put in) and it was on the Haw also. It was getting dark when we got off the river, and a nasty looking lightning storm seemed to be on its way in. and we had to be at work first thing bright and early in the morning. but that's what kind'a made the trip! if that hadn't of happened then it would have been just another trip on the Haw but we managed to get a story and a lesson all while having a blast.
You my friend are a certified nut! But one dude I'd want in my corner in the event something went wrong. Your a wizard of the water, Love your channel man...
And you DIDN'T do the Reese Witherspoon joke??? Conditions on the river looked awesome. It was good to finally see someone else provide you some kayak tutorial footage.
Thanks Roy! That would not be the best boat for those conditions. LOL, but it would be a great story later! I have considered doing runs in alternate style boats just to give an idea of what they can/can't do...
I stopped using a leash last year, I tipped over, leash end around my throat, and than pushing my apple to back of my throat, was secured to my kayak, use a break away strap now.
That is the danger...loose ropes are bad enough, ropes that are attached to boats and paddles and people can get really dangerous really fast! Glad you worked it out!
Hey Double D, I was paddling a Dagger Katana 10.4, love the boat, has daggers ergo whitewater outfitting, bulkhead not foot pegs, bulkhead in rear also. My drysuit is a Typhoon ezdon. you can order typhoon drysuits off amazon for less than $400. They come from England and the English drysuits seem to be about 1/2 the price as American drysuits quality for quality. Werner desperado paddle.
Double D, that day was my Liquid Logic Remix XP10 crossover, Werner Desperado, Kokatat Supernova suit, Astral Ringo PFD, Sweet Protection Wanderer helmet, Snapdragon Glacier Trek skirt, and I was trying out Level 6 pogies. Everything works great save for the pogies. Not tight enough around paddle shaft and for big hands not stiff enough for reentry. Will probably upgrade to NRS or Snapdragon pogies
Thanks Jeff! The water was definitely cold, but with the drysuit, it is complete non-factor. I would not take/go with a padder in whitewater that was not dressed for immersion in these conditions.
Nice video! Chris"Kentucky Woodsman" sez ya' might be at Fish Pond Lake in May! I have an o'l 14' Heritage Sea Dart, works great fer me! If all goes well I'll see ya' there! Ya' never know what's goin' to happen on the river...do ya'! Thanks. ZZ.

Did Charlie really think that YOU would miss the opportunity to show a swimmer?? LOL! Class 2 boogy looks fun, but a bit much for the Old Town Next. I need to look at getting nto some mild whitewater, but I am not sure that the whole “Jumpin’ Armadillo Dinner Club” thing is banking me enough brownie points to start looking for another boat right now. I may have to find another income of points to add to the savings account before I start looking at that too hard. Right now the account is about to get wiped out! LOL!
He he! I know the pain! So many boats, so little expendable income! Once you go whitewater, you can never go back. The next could handle the class 2 boogie. But - a swim in that boat would a memorable experience!! It would be a tough one to wrangle back to shore. Like RK Brian says...life is short - buy the boat!
River Kings I may have to quote you on that. ...”buy the boat!” That will probably go over as well as the Chief Deputy of our county Sheriff department standing up in front of 150 teachers, principals and Board of Education members and while he is lecturing on school safety, he exclaims, “SCREW your policy! It’s DUMB.” I asked my principal if I was allowed to quote that...they asked me not to. 😂😂😂
Thanks Dirk! Water temp was in the 50's. Whitewater is where it is at. Even the lesser style runs like this are infinitely better than flat water. Once you go ww, you can't go back.
Good question. I would never tether it to anything unless I was in the open ocean. Paddles float. They can always be recovered downstream. Any rope whether it is attatched on one end or two presents a major entrapment hazard in current. It could easily wrap around a foot or neck etc during a swim.

Normal flows are 3.5' on gauge / 210 cfs. These levels were 7' on the gauge and 4000 cfs.
