As someone who has been independently studying math/physics outside of a formal school setting, it is so rare to stumble across others who share interest in it. Often when I mention that I study it for the sake of pure interest and curiosity, I'm met with blank stares or condescending comments. I think it is important for us mathematicians to not give in, and rather try our best to explain why we enjoy what we do and feel completely unashamed for it. Anyone willing to learn a challenging concept is on the right path in my book.
Perhaps this is anecdotal based on my internet experiences, but I do believe math is slowly and steadily gaining more positive traction, thanks to channels like Professor Leonard, 3blue1brown, Khan Academy, etc. I'm excited to see where this realm of free and open education leads to.

I’ve had teachers in middle school who HATED when a student asked a question just to clarify something. They would say something along the lines of “if you were paying attention you would know” then go on and on and put them on blast and make them look like a fool in front of everyone else. Never asked questions because of that, from the fear of being humiliated. I feel those people should not be teachers.
Also, I would like to thank you so much professor. I already took calculus 1 and calculus 2 but I am watching these lectures to prepare for calculus 3. These lectures are better than anything I’ve seen on the internet. Especially the ones you pay for. Plus I am reading a book along with the lecture to reinforce my understanding and the purpose of each section. My goal is to finish up to your calculus 3 lecture before the end of summer to prepare for calculus 3! Thank you for everything.

My love for math has been a lonely journey and i didnt really find it until my first college math class at 27! But i am reminded that van gough didnt pick up a paint brush til 28. i got so excited to truly be surrounded by people who shared the love. That didnt happen and i overly romanticized the concept before i began. I didnt fit in with The students as they didn’t share my love. Here i was in a major in which i thought the ego would be suspended but no, it was more prevalent than ever. More so because i loved makeup and nail polish and getting my hair done as much as i loved differential equation and infinite series (the most beautiful concept in the world to me, the most poetic of all mathematical concepts(in my opinion)) i was taken even less seriously. The teachers took me even less seriously then the students. When i asked a question once in class the professor told me “i cant even answer your question with that all that makeup on your face.” To which i was laughed at by the whole class. Bullied in highschool and then in college. Yay.
I was so discouraged and sad that no one got excited about the subject the way i did, not even the professors.
My math journey has been a lonely one, but the number 1 is my favorite number.

“Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty-a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture, without appeal to any part of our weaker nature, without the gorgeous trappings of painting or music, yet sublimely pure, and capable of a stern perfection such as only the greatest art can show.”
    ― Bertrand Russell
Back in middle and high school, I used to have this discouraging feeling from being made fun at when saying I liked Maths. However, by the time I got to college and had my courses of calculus A through C, I had finally seen the hidden beauty of Maths and FELT a glimpse of passion to study it. Prof. Leonard, your country has thousands of people in it who believe that the earth is flat. I doubt that's simple because they don't understand math, but rather because no one encouraged them to do more and to be more. Don't let anyone talk down to your enthusiasm and love of math. It is so generous of you to share that with the world through UA-cam. Hundred of comments left on your videos attest to how you are changing people's lives. You have single handedly done more for Calculus education on earth than any other human being alive today.

I'm older than you are, Prof Leonard, and a teacher of English. But I pursue maths as a hobby - mathematics is, after all, another language. I just want to thank you very much for your lucid and systematic approach; the trouble you take explaining concepts to us; and the sense of humour that you possess that does offer a little 'relief' from the tension of concentrating on maths. Thanks so much for enabling me to get my fundamentals in order and for making me love maths more and more each day. Incidentally, in India, where I come from, loving maths is 'cool'!

I don't recommend that people do this but for some reason I've been putting off Calculus 3 for much of the last third of the semester and as a result had no clue or motivation to learn what surface integrals, divergence, flux, curl, etc were. That was until a couple days ago. It was great you posted this video when you did because it really gave me the confidence and encouragement to sit down and actually learn the stuff for the final. So the day before my final I binge watched all of your chapter 15 videos for that class and MAN was that a life saver. Not only did I get excited to actually learn the content, but I also almost completely forgot that I had a final in less then 24 hours that I still needed to learn a third's semester of content for! Needless to say, I went into that final with no sleep but with all the knowledge and understanding of the material imparted by you and your amazing teaching style. I couldn't have gotten that A without your videos, and encouragement :) . Thank you again from the bottom of my heart. You truly are the greatest professor, and I can say that with confidence.

Perhaps you will never see this message, but I just wanted to put it out there. Although it is geared towards people who like math subject, the implications of your message are far bigger than you’ll ever know. Scrolling through my YT feed today, looking for videos on “how to deal with an abusive relationship”, I clicked on your video and started balling. Your words about not letting people take things you like away from you, gosh, touched my heart. I am 3 days away from college graduation (I lived through many math classes thanks to your lessons), and I feel like an avalanche of change is coming my way. I don’t believe in signs, but hearing your message the very day I realize I need to change my life is nothing less than magical, feeling like someone out there is watching our for me 💞. Thansk Prof Leonard!!

I found professor Leonard this past February when I began a statistics class that began in January. I learned everything in this corse through you. We use rstudio which has this traditional way of learning statistics more about coding than apply formulas and solving by hand. I was taking my final tonight and your encouragement email popped up. It made me smile and relax as I was stuck on a problem. After I finished my final I listened to your message. I feel like you popped into my inbox at the right time with a message that speaks to my exact experience with this course. Thank you for doing these videos and explaining in such clear detail that anyone can learn math.

This is the first year in my life ever doing calculus. With your help I am taking calculus 3 and I still can’t believe it. I think it’s a beautiful class but my tests are out of this world! I have a professor that shits on American culture for not being mathematically literate out of high school. His tests are pretty damn hard and he boasts most of this content is not even ‘real thinking’. It’s been an uphill battle with his terrible tests but I’m still in the game because of you professor Leonard! I would love to have the privilege to have a professor who treats our learning with respect like you!

I remember when I was in elementary/middle school I used to be terrible at math. I couldn't, and still can't, do mental math very well. At all. My first year of Algebra-I was bad, but when I got to Geometry I had an amazing teacher. He said to the class, “Teachers don’t fail stupid, they fail lazy”. From then on I became the best in every class I took. I never had less than a 95 in Geometry, Algebra-II, AP Stats, or any class. Because of this channel and ProfRobBob, I started the school’s first Math Club and tutored kids for 3 years.

Thank you so much Professor Leonard! I believe in everything you said in this video and you continue to inspire me. I became a huge math person near the end of high school because of an amazing teacher I used to have. I've truly started really enjoying math and pushing my curiousity for it every day. It is people like you that prove people wrong about math being "impossible" and simply being about your approach towards it. I really feel like I have developed the mentality to keep pushing and stay optimistic about figuring things out. You can even say the way math has changed my way of thinking and the satisfaction I recieve from it has become a very addicting feeling.
Never stop, Professor Leonard! Students everywhere demand more people like you.

Some quotes that I've picked up or affirmations I tell everyone:
"Mathematics is the letters and grammar of the universe while physics is the language."
"You're only smart when you realize how much more you have to learn."
I love science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Not because of how much money one can make off of it. But because you have an idea that can revolutionize the world and make it so much better, and it all starts with the fundamental constituents. Besides, people want to say math is complicated, but in all honestly, people have so many variables that others just develop a intuition to fill in the unknowns. That is not a solid way for someone like me to live and is the reason why we have so many problems in the world today. So many people rush out with an idea that they think, believe, and/or feel will make the world better, but the underlying variable that they choose to work on and assume is the problem is only showing a correlation and is sometimes nowhere near causation.
You are a good man Professor Leonard and I appreciate all that you do for the people that you help (myself included).
