  • A projector is the key piece of technology in showing movies in theaters around the world. Movies are part of every modern culture. And while movies on VHS and DVD are extremely popular, nothing replaces the larger-than-life spectacle of a grandiose film, such as "The Patriot," filling the big screen.

What a great and clear explanation......I loved this subject since I was young at school and always wondering how moving pictures are made to move out of that long filem strip of separate pictures.......doing lots of reading from books on this subject... finally...I got it...

Most professional projectors used an intermittent sprocket that is connected to a Geneva movement which is made up of a Maltese cross and a cam. Also... three bladed shutters are only used in certain applications the far vast majority of professional machines use a two blade shutter the exposes each frame twice for a 48hz “flicker”

A fascinating video. Although, you could argue that film motion is both real and an illusion and not just the mind blending the images together .

5:02 I don't understand. Why not just have the smaller "advance film" blade and remove the other two blades? Surely it's the length of the blackout that causes the noticeable flicker?

    Hi,
This is such an amazing video. I keep coming back to it just to rewatch it!
Thanks so much for making it.
    I just have one question.
I get how the first sprocket pulls the film from the supply reel, but what pulls the film onto the takeup reel after the second sprocket pulls it through the projector?
Thank you for answering my question and thanks again for the brilliant video.
    Cheers,
    Chris

The takeup reel itself rotates along with the supply reel and it has to pull the film without slack after the second sprocket : )
