  • RUD TECDOS solutions are sought after in the maritime industry for inland waterways to move or drive objects weighing several tonnes.
The Raymond Island ferry, located in the Gippsland Lakes of Victoria, Australia, provides a vital transportation link between the island and the mainland town of Paynesville. This unique ferry system utilises a chain drive mechanism for propulsion, offering a simple yet effective solution for short-distance crossings.
The Raymond Island ferry encountered operational issues with its existing chain drive system. The ferry utilised 26mm Grade 80 mining chains designed for a different application. These chains were prone to slipping within the gypsy wheel (a spoked wheel with pockets designed to engage the chain links).
This mis-engagement resulted in several problems:
    - Twisted Chains
    - Compression at Landings
    - Chain Breakage
RUD replaced the current system of 26mm chains with a 32 x 90 TECDOS chain with a Corrud finish.
Our solution encompassed several key elements:
    - Upgraded Chain with Increased Strength and Reduced Elasticity
    - Improved Drive System Components with Matched Idler Feed Rollers, Anti-Twist Devices and Calibrated Hydraulic Motors
    - Custom Entry Wheels
The Raymond Island ferry case study is a prime example of how a well-designed chain drive system is essential for chain ferries' efficient and safe operation.
