Unless you are talking about Bach's music, I think you mean *counterpoise*

Excellent, as always - thank you Dave! I use a "special" length of 107 feet for my end fed wire. It is non-resonant, (but easily tunable) on any ham band 160 - 6 meters. With a 9:1 unun and a very long (>110 feet) counterpoise, my rig internal tuner matches it on every band with excellent on-air results. I also have a choke just before the unun to prevent the coax shield being recruited. N7RLV near Seattle

      Interesting
How did u arrive at the various lengths?
I hv a myantennas, 134 foot, 9-1 balun, , 80-10. In conversation, I added a 34 foot counterpoise, clipped to the ground rod at a 90 deg angle.
With my mfj tuner, I can work 160!! Not great of course but ok! 1.5-1.7 swr’s.
      Any further advice is appreciated.

No counterpoise needed on the EFHW, it's a voltage fed antenna, not a current fed antenna, so there is very little to no current present to worry about. A simple earth ground is plenty sufficient on the EFHW.

I am lead to believe when portable with a short coax a counterpoise is a must ?

In this case, when Dave says "it depends" this means, EXPERIMENT. See what works for you and let us know.
Dave gave a few ideas of what to try, but if you're looking for additional tips, just look for EFHW on YT and see what others have done. Take a look at the websites of EFHW manufacturers and see what they suggest. Personally, I think the best thing you can do is experiment and see what works for you.
I have an EFHW cut for 10m that I usually run horizontal and occasionally vertical. I cut a small length of wire to use as a tuning stub that I cut for the lowest SWR near the FT8 frequency. I had no problem working 4 continents.

What constitutes "works"?. IOW, is it min SWR? What is the metric used to show what works as a countrrpoise length? Thanks

I have (2) ZEP type EFHW transformers at 49:1 and there is no ground/counterpoise connection for this type. What is your suggestion if any?

How long do you recommend the coax run to be if you are counting on the coax counterpoise. Is it expressed as a ratio of wavelength or a percentage of the frequency?

I think the kayaks are used for testing is about 75 feet long. And that seems more than enough. It’s interesting that the iPad thinks kayaks are coax.

Hi Dave. Would be helpful to hear your thoughts about an EFHW counterpoise when using the antenna in a portable operation when you don’t have a permanent ground connection. 73, Marc, W4MPS

My antennas are all grounded to a copper plate clamped on an 8 foot ground rod with a bulkhead connector to the shack side.

Thanks Dave, You have answered MOST of the Questions..... BUT Not This One .... :-) :-) :-) OK, What is the 'Placement' of the Said Counterpoise ????..... Does it run 'Under' the 'Radiator' / Antenna OR is it in the Opposite directions .... Some say NEVER Under while others just don't say :-) :-) :-) Would love you to PLEASE clear This One Up .... I have just Earned my 'Ham License, although being well on the Wrong Side of 70 already .... Have been wortking 26 & 27Mhz CB Bands for years, now running my 'Granny Radio' ... An Older ICOM IC735, though a 49:1 UnUn into a 'Random Wire' Antenna ( Not actually Random .... :-) :-) :-) ) Thanks for All your Great Vidclips, Fantastic Info. .... Cheers from Christchurch, New Zealand ..... Keith ZL3KEI
