- The Brussels big bell, called Salvator.
A film made with Thibaut Boudart's help.
There's two views : (1) and (2). The number two is also amazing.
This is the big bell of Sint-Goedule cathedral, in Brussels. The weight is 6700 - 6800 kg. The tone is Sol 0 (G). The founder is Peeter Van Den Gheyn. Date is 1638.

Le bourdon de la cathédrale de Bruxelles, appelé Salvator.
Un film réalisé grâce au soutien de Thibaut Boudart.
Il y a deux points de vue : (1) et (2). Le n°2 est aussi intéressant.
C'est le gros bourdon de la cathédrale de Bruxelles, Sainte-Gudule. Le poids est 6700 - 6800 kg. La note est Sol 0 (G). Le fondeur est Peeter Van Den Gheyn. La date est 1638.

to my ears, the sound of beating an old rusty steel tyre rim at a church in rural India is very much the same as the sound of these bells. for they are rung with the same purpose, calling people for prayer.
there are two serious problems, but the reason is the same, the yoke of the bell. It is not a straight one, but arched and this produces a special force, because during ringing the upper part of the bell turns to the right side, and the lower to the left and this causes, that these forces practically tear the waist of the bell as the time goes.(It was noticed and proved 50 years ago in Germany)

I was there 5 years ago, sad to see that nothing has changed since then, I'm sure that this bourdon will be cracked very soon, though I really like it and could be preserved for generations easily
The bell has got amazing voice
the other problem is, that in case of a straight yoke, the clapper is able to move in the same direction as the bell moves ad practically flies. in case of arched yokes it falls makes no moving, only hits the bell. In the international bell investigation project probell.org it was also proven, that this also lasts the bell and reduces the lifetime of the bell signifcantly. The reason is, the contact moment of the clapper and bell (how long they contact each other).
Aiai wat slingert die klepel. Op zich wel een prachtige klok, het lage luidtempo vanwege de krukasophanging moge dan een stemmige sfeer opwekken, het gaat wel ten koste van de klank.
I know, but I can't change this alone... A lot of ringing systems are like that in Belgium, perhaps I could say something like 20%. This is cultural, beginning was made during 50' years. It's not easy to change this now...

Pretiosas sound is extremely beautiful and somewhat sinister.
This sounds like an absolute pain due to terrible mounting system and the clapper dramatically being awful
Ne vous inquiétez pas, les "gestionnaires" sont au courant et vont voir le bourdon pratiquement à chaque sonnerie. Donnez leur le temps de convaincre les propriétaires (et ça, c'est compliqué car la cathédrale de BXL a de multiples intervenants) du bien fondé d'une sonnerie lancé (comme c'était avant 1960 !!!). Il y a déjà eu des améliorations depuis 10 ans : si vous aviez vu avant, avec le battant en "T" et avec l'ancien moteur, vous tomberiez à la renverse !
@Stormklok Il est clair que le battant est attaché de manière étrange, c'est mou et il rebondit. Il faut bien voir que c'est une cloche ancienne. Comme la bélière (l'anneau du haut) est très large, ce n'est pas facile... Quand la boule a frappé, la cloche continue encore de monter, et facilement de 20 centimètres.

The clapper is using lots of force when falling on the bell. In the Netherlands are not few historical bells destroyed by this way of ringing. You don't have an optimal development of the sound, and it's even destructive for the bell. I don't know who invented such a system.
@MrGaet61 Les cloches sont dans des tours différentes. Le bourdon d'un côté, toutes les autres cloches de l'autre côté. L'enregistrement d'un plenum, c'est depuis le comble que c'est à faire...
Peut-on attendre une rénovation/restauration pendent les années suivantes? Ce serait indispensable.

@tchorski Le battant a été renouvelé il y a deux ans. L'ancien (Eijsbouts, années 60 au moment de l'électrification et du nouveau joug) était usé. La boule était également bien trop forte et ressemblait à un "T" avec des angles (initialement) très tranchant donc nocifs pour la cloche.
Le point d'attache a été rabaissé pour que le nouveau battant ne retombe plus trop, c'est maintenant plus au niveau de l'axe de rotation de la cloche, mais ce me semble en effet encore insuffisant.
Wenn dieses wunderbare Instrument an einem geraden Joch aufgehängt wäre, würde es sehr viel besser klingen. Trauen die Statiker dem Turm nicht,- oder warum hat man die Glocke gekröpft aufgehängt ? Platz im Glockenstuhl ist doch genug vorhanden.
@Landfeuerglocke No idea if anything will be repaired in this north tower. I could think that nothing will change for a while. In the south tower, carillon will be improved soonly.

La cloche a un très joli son, mais je préférerais en lancé, moi.

@Stormklok A priori, ce n'est pas prévu pour le moment. Par contre, une rénovation du carillon pourrait voir le jour, si les fonds suffisant sont réunis. Remplacement de la cabine, du clavier, de la tringlerie, et de la sonnerie automatique.

Est-ce qu'on va aussi remplacer le joug du bourdon, comme on a fait pour les cloches de la tour sud?
Thats why you can hardly see this kind of ringing in german speaking countries, because they strict bell inspecting and investigating methods, that don't allow this kind of damaging a great cultural heritage. I hope I helped to understand it, if you are interested in this topic.

Ik heb pas geleden van Thierry Pauwels gehoord dat er plannen klaar liggen om de Salvator aan een rechte as te hangen, alleen wat er nog nodig is: tijd, geld en geduld.....

@Stormklok A priori non, mais elle nécessite un gros entretien et peinture.
Jusqu'à l'électrification et le placement de ce joug ci dans les années 1960, le joug était en bois et le bourdon sonné au pied, en lancé franc. Même système qu'à la basilique de Saint-Denis (visible sur UA-cam). Dommage qu'on n'y revienne pas mais sans doute dangereux pour la structure de la tour et le vénérable bourdon ?
Le grand souci, c'est qu'il n'existe pas d'expert campanaire officiellement nommé en Belgique, c'est donc du n'importe quoi qui est fait un peu partout. A priori vu les derniers développements en date, c'est pas près de changer...

Lemme get this straight. So Salvator was Cast in 1638 and The greatest Bourdon Emmanuel was cast in 1685?

Je sais bien, mais je ne suis pas gestionnaire de l'édifice. C'est ce que tout le monde dit, mais voilà, je ne peux pas remplacer tout seul. Je peux donner les coordonnées du gestionnaire. Ceci-dit, outre cette cloche, c'est un mode de volée TRES répandu en Belgique, très très très beaucoup. Salvator n'est pas la seule cloche concernée.

C'est le cas de nombreuses personnes. Remettre en lancé, c'est ce que le gestionnaire souhaiterait. Cependant, cela nécessite une étude concernant les poussées, tout de même assez importante. Donc voilà, sur place on y songe et peu à peu, la démarche s'initie, bien que ça soit administrativement parlant un peu compliqué.
Effectivement, c'est un système proposé par la fonderie. Ici si je ne me trompe pas, (c'est dur à savoir), Horacanthus, et donc Eijsbouts. Quand je dis qu'il n'y a pas d'expert, c'est qu'il n'y a pas un gars officiel, qui ne fait que ça. Il y a des gens qui sont bien calés, et en quelque sorte experts, mais aucun gars en officiel, qui peut guider les gestionnaires. Il faut savoir qu'il y a très-très pire que Salvator. Certains endroits sont effrayants.

@tchorski Prochain Plenum à Noël. On se recontacte pour essayer d'avoir quelque chose de beau, il y a moyen depuis les combles avec deux micros. A mon sens, avec les demis tons dans la sonnerie "ordinaire", le plenum n'est pas beau. Je peux programmer (du haut vers le bas) sol-fa-ré-do-sib-sol, ce qui est meilleur qu'avec le la et le mib inclus.

@@pilettada2pollici549 è una campana sol2... per essere a sistema veronese deve avere la prima versione del ceppo cavadini, per esserlo non basta avere la velocità del moto oscillatorio quasi uguale a quella di un'altro sistema.
@@paganini8670 per esempio le campane di breganze non hanno il ceppo cavadini e sono alla veronese, anche Monte Berico, questa ha la ruota come il sistema Veronese
@@pilettada2pollici549 vero, hai ragione, comunque un sistema non lo si calcola dalla ruota, dal tipo di ruota, dall'asta e dall'aspa che una campana possiede, ci sono molti fattori che portano alla conclusione definitiva... ho sempre saputo che la prima versione del ceppo cavadini, possiede le giuste proporzioni per ottenere un sistema veronese corretto e perfetto.

@thibou49 Complètement inutile, surtout si c'est pour installer un machin électrique. Concernant l'age, je suis pas sur qu'il risque quelque chose, le tintement étant - la plupart du temps - moins méchant mécaniquement que les coups de battant lors d'une volée.
Ook toen ik nog niet vroom was hield ik al van klokgelui. Maar nu ik diepgelovig rooms-katholiek ben houd ik er nog altijd van. Geen twijfel mogelijk !!!
