Speed Freaks, released as Speed Punks in North America, is a racing video game for the PlayStation for up to two players (four with a multi-tap for PlayStation).
The game involves racing around a variety of tracks while using several weapons; including items that make the racer's speed increase, missiles, and slime. The game was developed by Funcom and released in Europe in September 1999 and in North America on March 31, 2000.
Single player Tournament mode. The green cubes are the pick-up icons and the purple hexagons are speed boost tokens.
Speed Freaks is a kart racing game featuring several single and multiplayer modes. During the game, players take control of one of nine characters and drive karts around tracks with various themes. During a race, the player's viewpoint is from behind his or her kart. The goal of the game is to either finish a race ahead of other racers, who are controlled by the computer and other players, or complete a circuit in the fastest time.
Icons marked with question marks are arrayed on the race tracks; they give weapons (pick-ups) to a player's kart if the vehicle passes over them. Pick-ups, such as missiles and slime, allow racers to hit others with the objects, causing them to spin and lose control. A kart that obtains the stealth mode pick-up is temporarily invulnerable to attack. Lines of speed boost tokens are found on the tracks. By running through these tokens, a kart collects them and fills cells on its speed boost bar. The player can use accumulated speed boost to increase speed at a faster rate than under normal acceleration.

Some people say that it's just a bad mario kart clone. But this game got a special place in my heart!
Any Kart game was proclaimed to be a Mario Kart clone - in reality they were evidently all inspired - from CTR to Speed Freaks. Yet they still played really well!

The nostalgia
The hours and hours spent playing this game. One of the first ever Ps1 games I got back in 1999 and it still feels like yesterday we played this non stop. Time to whip out the old PS1 and play again!

I’m playing this at the moment on my ps1, great racer with lots of personality and the skill ceiling is at the perfect level for me, kind of like CTR. The graphics still look pretty nice for this day and age too.

@@NathanHayes97I think of this game many times a year because it's such a huge part of my childhood memories. I will always love and it'll always have a special place in my heart. I still have my PS1 and the game here in pretty good condition, but I don't dare actually play old games because I couldn't bear the nostalgia. Watching videos like this gives me a little more distance if that makes any sense at all. 😅

I think that Funcom made a big mistake by not realising this on the Nintendo 64, and not releasing a sequel on the GameCube as it could have easily been an iconic franchise to Nintendo fans as it is heavily Nintendo-esque. I really do think it deserves a re-release on the Switch.

PLEASE could you let me know whatever the hell you did to get this running? I tried NTSC and the PAL "Speed Freaks".... Crashes 1 min into a race. Please let this old school gamer know so he can get his nostalgia high!
This game doesn't work on certain PS2 models ( slim ). The backwards compatibility of PS2's has some flaws.

Did you ever get it to work? It crashes for me during 1st lap every time. All of my other games work, but not Speed Punks.

You know, I've been on/off searching for months trying to find this game with no success, trawling through videos and lists one by one. Turns out I finally found it by typing "ps1 cart racer game"... it was hit 3

Very good game with superb visuals but the problem of this game is that has only head to head multiplayer mode without other CPU and it is boring,to be honest. And thats the reason why this game will be forever behind CTR .

The original Mario Kart came out 7 years before Speed Freaks.

I don't think I ever won a single race in this game.
I remember switching to CTR over this,cause whenever i drive through the crowd they always booed me and i was like this game is mean. Plus CTR is soo much fun than this game.
Played this again very recently via emulator (I do own an official copy of the game) and I never noticed that the karts themselves are invisible. At first I thought it was a glitch with the emulator - that I had downloaded a faulty ISO - but no, that's actually how the game was developed; the karts were intentionally programmed to be invisible. It baffles me as to why this decision was made.
