  • James Frazer, a Scottish social anthropologist, posited religious consciousness in human beings to have evolved through three distinct modes: from magic to religion to science. We evaluate these insights drawn from Frazer's work The Golden Bough and provide a critical reflection.

I read the Golden Bough during the pandemic and was pondering some of the obvious cultural biases Frazer brings, like his disdain for "savages" who thought the forest had a unified spirit. Cut to 100 yr later and science learns that much of the forest is the offspring of a couple of matriarchs and they're like a family and their underground mycelium network that shares resources, creating a unified community. In other words, the nonscientific language used by the "savages" was more accurate than the modern science view which just saw a bunch of trees.

Yet you're using modern science to legitimize their view, which was then only a guess

@@sanchezz85 "Guess" is an interesting choice of word. Perhaps consider intuition, connection to truth without scientific validation. If science validates a truth that was believed deeply does that make that truth now valid in your mind? Is it possible that truth was intuited? Guess seems inadequate or inaccurate.

We will forever be connecting a myopic tapestry as long as we don't acknowledge science as having limitations, time and exhausted effort being two of the major ones.

So many Authors from this era concealed a great hatred for religion in endless tomes.
They were personally weak men, crooked men, who's stupidities were poured on the head of people via the printing press. Frazier did not know about Christianity, neither about ancient tribes .... but his inner satisfaction was achieved by getting people to read his nonsense.
Now look at the generations who grew up reading such people, their entire world is dying, they are being washed away.
Meanwhile back in the vast Cathedrals of Europe - who can doubt something is here.
Truly, life is a test of intelligence and the wages of sin are death.
