This is the best tutorial for a very busy graduate student who needs a strong but brief overview of Overleaf. Thank you. I am working on a PhD in AI/ML at Arizona State in the USA.
During my 10+ years using UA-cam I believe I have only commented on 2 or 3 videos maximum... Now thank you for this video, it was very HELPFUL! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!
There is nothing especially wrong with using Microsoft Word for academic writing, for many it is an application that they are comfortable using. However, it is fair to say that the majority of Word users are not using it well. If you use styles for all of your formatting, then you just alter your styles to change the appearance of the entire document. You can also use templates, it starts to become more problematic when users deviate from that (and it is very tempting to fall into bad habits with Word). LaTeX is great for keeping things disciplined. It forces you into doing things "right" and that is it's greatest strength IMHO If you are not using LaTeX, then yes it's a great tool for writing, but it takes some learning. Word needs learning too though. You also have to consider other factors such as what application is your supervisor/s using? The tool you choose needs to be accessible to everyone who is collaborating with you. Whist LaTeX is widely used within the University that I work in, it is nowhere near Word for popularity. If you are working within specific disciplines such as computing science, engineering, physics etc. It is very popular and your supervisor will probably be steering you towards it. If you are working within some social sciences for instance there is a strong possibility your supervisor wont have heard of it. But don't be put off Word. It's collaboration tools are excellent especially if you are using OneDrive too. If you combine a referencing add in such as EndNote, Zotero or Mendeley I think the referencing is slightly easier. But... training is the key with Word. If it feels like it's hard work, you are almost certainly not using it well.
Great video, Ciara. I won't lie - Overleaf/Latex still intimidates me, but I am currently working on a large document in Word and can already see the limitations related to this. I think I might explore Latex in the summer, when I have more time! I'll definitely be coming back to this video when I do!
I knew about overleaf yesterday and am excited to start learning with your first video. I intend to use if for my thesis writing and a paper that I will publish from my thesis. Great learning from your video, it inspired me.
Thanks for the tutorial. Part of my teams role is writing policies and those numberings can get tricky in word. I think the equation tool is probably the best feature
LOL - I have never heard of Overlear or Latex until about 20 minutes ago. I was watching videos on Obsidian and now I find out there's a whole new way to write my papers too! I'm really excited about this because I hate Word.
This was really helpful. Trying to figure out how it could work into my workflow. Right now I use primarily Obsidian for research and Word (my PI is old school). Not sure how to incorporate Overleaf into the workflow but I will definitely think about it!
Thank you so much for this video. I am much less scared now to try using LaTex. I always thought it was something super complex and it would take so long to learn it. Ha-ha.
Wonderful and informative video, thank you! I've recently started working with Scrivener and find it very useful for structuring large amounts of text and keeping things organized. Have you tried it? I will definitely consider using Overleaf to process and format the text and get a nice looking final result.
I often use LaTex (TexPad) and R-Markdown, however, I much prefer R-Markdown over LaTex because it drastically speeds up and improves my workflow given that my statistical models are typically performed in R. :)
I dont know much more about LaTex usually i used to do copy from screenshot and convert into google docs then copy from that paste into chatgpt boom it will do remains work i tried mathematics
Isn't it worth mentioning what functionality is a paid feature? For example, track changes is a paid function and there's no other way round it. The History is also only valid for 24 hours, though you can use this free if you refer 6 others.
Thank you so much for the video. I am in my second year of Master's and came to know about overleaf sometime ago. Now, I am learning this tool.

Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much! Actual lifesaver, I'm writing my first academic paper right now and was super intimidated by latex.
Glad I could help! Best of luck

Catching up on these comments 🥵 Yea it is a bit scary. I'd say after your transfer it could be good to look at for your final thesis.

Yep, word sucks!
This was really helpful. Trying to figure out how it could work into my workflow. Right now I use primarily Obsidian for research and Word (my PI is old school). Not sure how to incorporate Overleaf into the workflow but I will definitely think about it!
Ah yes it can be tricky to bring in Overleaf with the old school PI but it is definitely a lot handier for collaborating
Thank you Ciara 😊 I use overleaf sometimes but it's the first time I learn about labeling thing .. that was really a good vedio 👍
The labelling is soooo helpful!!
this video was so helpful! i will start using this now!
Yay!! I hope it goes well for you !!
Overleaf all the way. I have been using it since 2017 during my masters but actually in this time of my PhD, I have become more fund of it
Overleaf is key for sure!
Thank you so much for this video. I am much less scared now to try using LaTex. I always thought it was something super complex and it would take so long to learn it. Ha-ha.
It definitely takes some time to get used to it but it’s worth it!!
Even though I realized it late, I believe it will help streamline my Ph.D. work and make my efforts more efficient. Hopefully!
Hello, how to change font style to Arial in latex overleaf
THank you! Your video really helped!
Thank you that was helpful, ceep going you have a great content 💜
Hi, how insert table design in word program and need insertion into overleaf IEEE tamplete
realllllly hepful! Thanks a lot!!! 🥰
How to add authors photos at the bottom of a research paper in LaTeX?
Wonderful and informative video, thank you! I've recently started working with Scrivener and find it very useful for structuring large amounts of text and keeping things organized. Have you tried it? I will definitely consider using Overleaf to process and format the text and get a nice looking final result.
I've actually not tried Scrivener but I have heard of it!
I often use LaTex (TexPad) and R-Markdown, however, I much prefer R-Markdown over LaTex because it drastically speeds up and improves my workflow given that my statistical models are typically performed in R. :)
Ah that makes sense if you are a R programmer !
thanks i am a student at tcd in dublin as well
My supervisor prefers Word. Is Overleaf compatible to Word?
Unfortunately Overleaf generates a PDF rather than a word document.
I have "springer latex2021 overleaf template" written over every page of pdf generated ..can anyone how to remove it .
Very helpful thanks
This was really concise and helpful! thank you so much!
Glad you found it useful!
Good job!
My only concern is if overleaf is safe? In term of our PhD documentation being safe from attacks and hacking etc.
I dont know much more about LaTex usually i used to do copy from screenshot and convert into google docs then copy from that paste into chatgpt boom it will do remains work i tried mathematics
Thank You dear..
A nice video
Thanks!

🎉🎉🎉
The video overlay is unnecessary. Would prefer seeing the Overleaf...
