    Those are arborist woodchips (also know as whole tree mulch or ramial woodchips). Saw dust is the by-product of milling wood and have a much higher carbon ratio ( I wouldn't recommend using sawdust, woodchips are way better).

    Hello, thank you for sharing this system with us. As an avid gardener and compost aficionado, this system is no less than brilliant imo.
    I'll be doing this for potatoes this year, thanks.

    Hey Julie, fyi, i separate rabbit manure from urine - well I dont, the window screen material ( netting ) on hooks, under the hutch does - the urine passes thru to big gray double tubs ( totes ) underneath the top one has holes in the corners so the urine drains to the lower tote to stop it from smelling as much emptying into 5 gal buckets ( then poured into compost or where needed ) and washing out twice a week , while the poo stays in the netting for collection into plastic garbage cans or old feed bags and put into compost or where needed - the poo drys out while hanging in the air - under the hutch i put on nmetal flashing angled inward to direct all to netting over tubs - well anyway - its only in winter while the grass ( pasture ) is dormant - as soon as grass is back they go to tractors ( cages on ground ) to be moved about twice a day saving food costs and fertilizing grass - bye

    I need to go back and watch your earlier Oklahoma videos again. We're in AL and I think the climate is more similar to there. I am thankful you are sharing what you've tried and learned and how it works. It's fascinating to see how this can push the seasons and grow more food. :-)

    Getting excited seeing this. I nearly have my first raised hot bed filled. Will be working on the second one this week.
    On a side note, I was able to buy a very small tractor to pull my trailer around, drag logs, hay, etc. But as I was talking with the seller, some turkeys came around the corner. They gave me two juveniles free! So now I finally got some turkeys. They also raise Katahdin sheep, so I may buy some later this year if I can afford them. They have goats too.

    You made a brief mention about gardening on straw bales. Straw bales contain little nutrition, that is why they require so much augmentation. The original bale method of gardening was in hay, but people did not like the " weeds" that are part of the results.

    Appreciate your practical life experience feedback. A question I'm trying to pierce together. Do you fill the bead mostly with carbon and layers of manure with little moisture until you get to the upper six inches to keep the warm bed ? And the top watering moves down into the lower levels? A one point you said it needed six weeks before planti g due to ammonia. It seems you limited water until the last to moderate the heating . Please correct me if Im missing yyour technique. Fully realize there is a need for hands on experience. Find this fascinating and am scrabling to get one going for this spring. Thanks again . Did buy your ebook! Thanks for the stand up and garden resource.

    Compost or manure definitely does the job but the hardest part is to get it there and then out of polytunnel :)

    • @dirtpatcheaven
      @dirtpatcheaven  2 роки тому

      Yes, I really like to keep the animals on the beds, that way I don't have to haul anything. We did put the rabbits on this bed later. The quail are manuring the bed on the other side.

    You’re certainly a wonder! I tried this once with horse manure, wood chips and chicken manure, but it didn’t get hot. Idk, I must have had my ratios wrong. I also didn’t know about the tea. Would chicken manure be too hot to use for the tea? I don’t have access to rabbit manure.

    Great video! Do you find it easier to have one hotbed in the middle or along the sides with a center walkway? I'm looking forward to trying this in my new greenhouse this coming season!!

    • @dirtpatcheaven
      @dirtpatcheaven  2 роки тому +3

      You know I am not sure? This one is really too narrow but any wider and the snow won't slide off of it in winter. The big greenhouse only has one down the middle and is SOOOOO much easier but it isn't the best use of space? I am at a loss for what the perfect solution is, it is a very good question.

      You get ammonia for a few days is all. Then the air is good again. I don't have my animals in the greenhouse while it is at the raging heat point.
