Tony Williams is one of the greatest American singers ever. Ever.
Everybody talks about Sinatra, Jackson, Armstrong, Cash, whatever, whomever... (I'm not dismissing them and others but just asking why Tony is never included with them)
Why is Williams so forgotten? To me, he is not only one of the outstanding voices of the 20th Century but one of the timeless voices of the modern era. Maybe forever.
    Viva Tony.

The curse of being just a band member. it should have been tony williams and the platters. A truly wonderful singer .maybe not the swing of sinatra the silk of nat king cole the life and fun of dean martin or the tone of matt monro but a great voice in its own right.

Written in 1933, this song was my parents' favorite. Resurrected in 1958 as a #1 hit from The Platters, it had the distinction of being performed by lead vocalist, Tony Williams, who was arguably one of the greatest singers who ever lived.

My father was in the army (joined up when he was 14 years old) served in World War II and during his tenure he used to sing to all his troops whenever they arranged some kind of concert - as a family- mum, dad and five kids - we used to sit around the fire after supper, dad would play the guitar and we would all sing. Some of these oldies especially the platters ( a special favourite of my dad's) Many many wonderful memories - thank god for UA-cam and the endless supply of music that will never be forgotten.

They asked me how I knew
    My true love was true
    I of course replied
    "Something here inside
    Cannot be denied"
    They said someday you'll find
    All who love are blind
    When your heart's on fire
    You must realize
    Smoke gets in your eyes
So I chaffed and then I gaily laughed
To think they would doubt my love
Yet today, my love has flown away
    I am without my love
    Now laughing friends deride
    Tears I cannot hide
    So I smile and say
    "When a lovely flame dies,
    Smoke gets in your eyes."

Great lyric by Otto Harbach and great music by Jerome Kern from the 1933 musical, "Roberta." It made it to the silver screen with the same name, "Roberta," in 1935, an RKO production. You can see it on Turner Classic Movies every now and then. The great Irene Dunn sings the song in the film version. This Platters performance is amazing and beautiful. But no one could mess up something so beautiful as this classic song.

Tony Williams was one of the major voices in American pop. He never received the recognition he deserved or the accolades. The songs recorded by The Platters with him singing lead became staples for a generation, slow dance stock favorites, and I couldn't imagine my youth without them any more than I could imagine it without Elvis or The Beatles or The Beach Boys or many others of superlative fame. It's a shame, but I suspect that Williams was more or less ignored because of his race. It had to be hard to make these films in nightclubs where neither he nor his fellow Platters could be seated and served.

I absolutely agree. It is an old song from the musical "Roberta" back in 1933, and many people have recorded it before and since The Platters, but none come near matching their version. It is one of about five songs that, to me, are the best of all the great doo-wop songs. The others are "Deep Purple" and "Stardust" both by Billy Ward and His Dominoes. And also "I Only Have Eyes For You" by the Flamingos, and "Since I Don't Have You" by the Skyliners. I grew up with doo-wop and still love it.
