I think the largest reason coach Sides is gone, is the fact that she continuously was forcing slow post centric half court offense on a team that cannot win with that style of play, except for the month she won coach of the month when she let the team play the way they want to. Also, she was hired to be a defensive specialist, and they had the second worst defense in the league.
When you have such a huge talent in a player, you have to have a huge talent big name, well respected, strong coach. Unfortunately, Sides is none of those things.
Imagine going into press conferences repeating "paint touches touches paint touches" when you have the best backcourt in the league at your disposal. The Fever's worst enemy all season, was their own coach
As far as a coach in terms of everything regarding the game, she was complete ass. Lineups, timeout usage, overplaying 2 of the worst guards on the roster and giving them more responsability than they should have, letting players wave off their best playmaker in the half court and stagnate the offense. The changes that made the team better were not from the coach, they were forced on her from management. This team could've been much better if they played the right way from the beginning.
I am from CC’s hometown and I know her play very well. Ine of the first things out of Sides mouth when the season started was “I have to help break some of her bad habits “ Sides had never stufied how CC was so successful at IA. She runs and guns ut, has to play a fast paced game and have the freedom to make logo threes. Sides took ALL of that away. Was horrible knowing when to call time outs. Actually kept the ball out of her hands the first part if the season. After the break you saw the team olay fast, run and gun and Clark taking logos. The ball should always be in CC’s hands cause she IS the playmaker. Sides never understood that from the very start. Thats why Sides got fired.
If only the Sun was able to draft her. It would almost guarantee a finals series. And the best part is Carrington wouldn’t be trying to hurt her. They might even be friends. What a strange alternate reality that would be. I’m glad she’s on the Fever. They will get it done. The parade after they win is going to be INSANE.
The downsided to the 1990 pount the rock, 4 players try to rebound is when you don't get the rebound a good passer will beat your team back to their man under the hoop.
She has the shooting and passing ability of Bird, and Magic and Steph, with the marketing of MJ. CC is so far above the rest of the league and was held back last season by Christie Sides. Watch her truly shine next season and possibly lead the Fever to their first of many championships.
We saw teams try to emulate these long outlet passes after the all star break and what we saw was hella ugly turnovers instead. it's not easy. you need the vision and timing.
Everyone in the W mocks Caitlin for her turnovers... but what they don't understand is that considering the number of "thread the needle" passes she makes, her turnover rate is surprisingly low.
I think that Sides just was not up to the horsepower of a team that she had. It's like giving a Volkswagen driver the keys to a GT-40. He/she might be great with the Volkswagen but not a clue how to deal with a GT-40! Essentially, the Fever has grow above Sides ability. Sides played their last game of the season like it was just another throw away games, and they lost! 21 and 19 sounds a lot better than 20/20! Be aggressive! Play each and every game to win! Sides also has not done a good job at coaching her players in the area of DEFENSE and that has hurt them a lot as well.
I think the Fever realized they needed a coach with more experience rather than someone learning on the job. Sides' inexperienced showed during games. She didn't do well with making in game adjustments. She didn't know when to call timeouts at all. Her subbing was questionable at times during games. Maybe Sides would eventually learn, but the Fever can't wait for someone to learn. They need someone who has experience so that they can focus on player development and building a championship team. I would love for them to get someone proven to be successful in defensive development. The Fever offense can be dynamic, as they've shown this last season. But their defense leaves a lot to be desired. Not all players are going to be great defensively. But you can still build a plan to help the team be better defensively.
Fever started 1-9. Really rough start to the season. But they went 8-2 after the Olympic break and although they ended at 20-20, everyone is expecting them to do much better and possibly win 36-40 of 44 games in 2025. A lot depends on the new coach and what new free agent(s) they are able to sign.
this is why mitchell will stay with the fever. you can't tell me mitchell isn't having fun catching those passes, she ain't gonna see that anymore if she leaves
She did not just lead the league in assists - she broke the all-time record of assists in one year!!! (and as a rookie) People also say she broke the rookie assist record, but who gives a F----. She broke the all-time WNBA record for assists in one game. She didn't play like a rookie - she was top 3 in the league this year, the best passer in history, made the most 3 pointers this year and most points by a point guard - all while doing things that have never been done before in WNBA or NBA: 25 pts, 10 assists, 5 rebounds, 5 steals, 5 blocks in one game (and she doesn't pad her stats). If CC was given all the fouls that Aja Wilson got from the refs, she'd average 6 to 8 pts more a game easy.
Kelsey HAS LITERAL WHEELS FOR FEET! CC' team mates be looking like wide receiver, running down the floor looking over their shoulders for that open pass that they KNOW is coming, because CC's ALWAYS looking down the floor. The ball can travel faster than the defense! Can't WAIT for Fever ball to return!
they let her go because they are serious about a chip rn and the coach was too green for that. cc deserves the best and she can choose the best. one of one
She doesn't know how to maximize Caitlin Clark. She used her as a decoy instead of making plays for her. She tried to change her playing style, limit Caitlin from shooting logo 3s & then telling it during a post-dame interview. She subbed her during a defensive play thinking she's a liability on defense. She let AB takes the final shot when she has the 2 best backcourt shooters on the court not mentioning Lexie & Dantas were there too who were more efficient than AB. She sticked to play certain players even tho the data shows she shouldn't. In-game adjustments was not on her vocabulary. She was also hired because of her "supposedly" defensive IQ, she obviously failed that. She was also soft when it comes to defending Caitlin.
First off, Linn Dunn hired Sides. Sides had never been a head coach before, or on a team in the WNBA as a coach that had a winning record. Caitlin is a fast break point and player. But also like the GS Warriors, when you have to run half court, you should be running a motion offense, meaning there are screens, picks back doors and dives to the basket constantly. This was never fully implemented and run. The screens and picks, even when done, many times were not good, which I a direct lack of coaching. Sides, whose specialty was supposed to be defense, nevershowed any consistency in a defensive scheme or improvement. Sides at times had Caitlin pass the ball, and then not be involved in the offense for minute at a time. Christy failed to call timeouts before teams would go on 12-15 point runs without a Fever score. But a big one was her lack of being animated and vocal to refs, especially when Caitlin was receiving excessive hard fouls. That's just a few examples.
Sides didn’t even want to do it. Dunn talked her into it. Probably not a great decision in hindsight but she did help with team culture and got them going in the right direction at least. That’s something.
@@ericMT My take was from the beginning was they both were trying to take a square peg and fit it into a round hole, which was their system that they knew and understood. They both needed to go because they didn't understand what they had. The game had passed them by. They reluctantly were implementing parts of what needed to be done. Christy only continued to make the same mistakes was because Linn was seeing the game the same way. And as a defense later in the season that they were sending complaints to the league office was lame. You talk about culture and the first third of the season I disagree. It was apparent to me, that the team didn't want to stand up for Caitlin when she was physically being abused early. When the possible injury foul she took in the first Seattle game happened, no flagrant was called, nobody on her team came immediately to help her. I think she felt isolated. Then when the Kennedy foul happened, Boston was right there and saw it happen. Boston walked casually over to help her up. No other teammate went after opposing players and no outburst from Sides. It wasn't until Matt Barnes and other NBA players went on after that and took the veterans to task, that I don't care who you are, you don't go after my teammate. It wasn't until than you saw a true team start to come together. But I think what really cemented them, despite Linn and Christ, was because of Clark, both Kelsey and Boston making All Star team. It was Clark's attention from defenses that allowed them to play their games, and realizing Caitlin will get them the ball to do their magic. But the other big was Caitlin going to Mexico with Lexi and Katey Lou that was the cherry on top. By that time it was the players who were winning, at times despite what Sides was doing.
I think Sides was fired because they don’t want to waste Aliyah Boston and Caitlin Clark’s prime. There is no reason those two shouldn’t win a couple championships together. I don’t think Sides is the right couch to make the rest of the team play their role around those two. It’s takes a lot of ego work.
Sides had poor timeout management, bad playcalling, questionable lineups, such as Kristy Wallace starting 15 games. She didn't stick up for her players. She allowed Noelle Quinn to bully her in an argument where she said "I'm sorry". She is a defensive coach but had arguably the worst defense. She did not know how to motivate/train her team to be better defensively and did not draft for it or trade for it. The defensive player of the year in college, Celeste Taylor, was waived. She never took responsibility, always placing blame. In her defense, she should not have been a head coach as she seemed ill prepared.
When CC dribbles AT her team mate, the team mates defense gets caught watching CC and that's when her team mate makes that back cut-Pretty ball!. When CC is dribbling down and team mate is running the wing, she draws the defense TO her to one side or the other, to be able to deliver behind the back passes or just a regular pass to her team mate for the assist!. The one thing that people are missing; CC passes the ball TO the open spot, LEADS YOU to the open spot using the bass; she PASSES YOU OPEN, and if you can hustle and get to the ball, you will be open for the shot. That's why some people say, that she can see the play BEFORE it happens. Her team mates couldn't do that in the beginning of the season. When CC cooks, EVERYBODY EATS!
Predominantly the reason why no other WNBA team runs their offense like the Fever is because no one else has been able to be as successful as CC and Hull and Boston and Mitchell in playing a fast pace game like that! CC did it in high school and throughout her time on the Iowa women's basketball team! And with New Coach Stephanie White for the Fever, It's going to be exciting watching them challenging for the 25 WNBA Championship
She left the team better than she found it but that’s not saying much since they won 5 games in 2022. She was an ok interim coach but now it’s time for a real coach to take over and get Indiana their rings.
C-Square is the energizer bunny on steroid's all natural though the Fever adjusted to her way of play as all the other teams had to change it up also against her, Sides did somethings good but blocked them to the full potential of greatness
The best and fastest back court in the "W" - Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell. I love a bball team that runs. Fun as hell.
Caitlin Clark is the best Quarterback in the WNBA. 😅
She is the only quarterback in the WNBA.
I think the largest reason coach Sides is gone, is the fact that she continuously was forcing slow post centric half court offense on a team that cannot win with that style of play, except for the month she won coach of the month when she let the team play the way they want to. @@_M.... Valid points. If forced by management(speculation unless you have evidence), why did she revert back for the last 5 games?
I love how much fun these women are having. The joy on Kelsie Mitchell’s face after that long get ahead pass as she laid it up says it all.
I am from CC’s hometown and I know her play very well. Ine of the first things out of Sides mouth when the season started was “I have to help break some of her bad habits “

She makes the game look so easy, she's just a very different beast 🇬🇧

And the strength. It's no simple thing to move the ball at that speed and that distance whilst remaining in complete control of aiming.
Everyone in the W mocks Caitlin for her turnovers... but what they don't understand is that considering the number of "thread the needle" passes she makes, her turnover rate is surprisingly low.
