- In this episode, I share with you the completion of a dream where I have designed from the ground up a region-free mod tray for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System Jr, which will allow you to play both North American Super Nintendo games and Japanese Super Famicom games on a North American Super Nintendo Entertainment System thanks to the NEStoration™ Region Free Mod Kit I designed and am manufacturing.
When I got into 3D printing in 2021, there were three things that I wanted to design and print. The first was a set of Mickey Mouse wall hangers for the ears my wife, daughters, and I have collected over the years. The second was a storage case for Famicom Disk System Disks in their cases, with Diskun on the sides. The third item I wanted to create was a region-free mod for the Super Nintendo and the Super Nintendo Jr which would allow me to play imported Japanese 16-bit Super Famicom games on a North American system. Thanks to SainSmart providing us with a SealLite handheld 3D scanner, and what I have learned over the last two and a half years regarding 3D modeling, I am proud to announce my NEStoration line of Gaming accessories and the first product under that brand, a region mod kit for the Super Nintendo. Let's show you how to install this kit.
Please note:
The NEStoration region-free mod tray will only allow you to play Japanese games on a United States system. It will not allow you to play PAL European Super Nintendo games on a US system as they operate at a different frequency. This does not convert PAL signals to NTSC, this simply alters the existing cartridge slot.
Tools needed :
NEStoration™ SNES Region Free mod tray
4.3 mm game bit or security bit
Number 0 Philips head screwdriver
Disassembly:
The underside of the SNES features 6 4.3mm Security Bits you need to remove. You can remove them in any order, but make sure to set them aside in a secure place as you'll need them later. Once the screws have been removed, you can separate the top and bottom half of the cases. Set the bottom half of the case aside as you will not need this at this time.
Flip the top of the shell over so you can see the inside of it. There are Phillips head screws that you will be able to see. You will need to remove each of these screws that retain the stock cartridge slot. Before removing the stock tray you will need to remove the reset mechanism spring. Use a needle nose pliers or a set of tweezers. Remove the cartridge locking lever mechanism from the tray, you won't need this on the conversion. Carefully lift the stock component from the system. Before we are done with this, we need to remove the reset plunger. It has 2 tabs on either side of the channel that locks it into place. Gently squeeze these tabs to release it, and it should pop right out. From here, you are done with the original tray & will not need it anymore.
Begin the reassembly process by installing the reset plunger into the new NEStoration tray. While I do my best to ensure free movement of this piece before proceeding. Once installed, you can install this tray in your system. From here, you need to prep the region-free tray by installing the 2 included standoffs. These key into the bottom of the tray to ensure they don't spin when you reinstall the screws. Before placing them into the tray, pre-thread the screw holes to make installation easier later. Once the standoffs are in-place, you can screw the tray to the lid of your system. Once completed, you're ready to reassemble your console.
I am super excited that I was able to design and produce this.Let me know if this is something you would be interested in. Have you ever collected Super Nintendo games? Let me know in the comments.

That 3D scanner is so sweet.
Another nice print.
That it is, thanks!
I've long since cut the tabs on my SNES, but this a great option for not tearing up your original hardware. This video made me think of doing this for my N64, and low and behold you have that covered too. Just ordered 2 of those. Keep up the good work Gary!
Hmm, not seeing an order come thru?
Ah, there it is, I'll get them printing right now!!
It’s nice that you can replace your cart tray without breaking the original. If I still had my console I would do this instead of breaking tabs on my snes.
Very cool!
Thanks!
Love it
Thanks so much
I'm sorry to say I've cut my tabs out of my system (I did this because I had bought a Super Gameboy 2), that was before these were widely available. Though I did make it look very clean, most don't even notice that it's like that. I would like to buy some N64 versions of these trays though.
I have the N64 ones too! roxolid-productions.square.site/product/nintendo-64-region-free-tray/4?cp=true&sa=true&sbp=true&q=false
@@RoXolid ever think about doing a Xbox Memory card unit USB adaptor mod 3-D print or atleast a printed out Memory unit case the could used? I've been looking something like it.
@RNRSpiderman no but remember I'm not the biggest Xbox guy
@@RoXolid just thought I'd ask
I wouldn't know where to start with something like that either to be honest
Finally! A solution that will not involve 'doctoring' your prized investment, especially if it's been with you since brand-new!
Even better, you can revert to the factory-original specs at any time in the future!😁
Not just imported Super Famicom titles but the Japan-only Super GameBoy 2 and Sufami Turbo!
I haven't finished watching the video yet, so I don't know if you touch on this or not, but one nice bonus for this reversible mod vs using an add-on adapter, is if your console is kept in an entertainment center with limited height, this helps with that issue.
Very true. You Can use a Game Genie if you mod that, but it does sit higher in the console then.
Umihara Kawase is my personal fav SNES import
one of the GOATs of platformers, especially on the snes.
Legit never heard of it
@RoXolid check it out! i absolutely recommend it, one of the best platformers on snes
Nice Video ! Sub & Big Like ! And Love Retro Nes Games !
Thank you so much and welcome
I'm Confused, I had a SNES in Venezuela when I was a kid ( it looked just like US version), I never had a problem with Japanese SF cartridges , so that means that something was different with my SNES , maybe it was region thing, Never had to cut any region lock tabs. Thanks for the video
How about one of these for N64?

I use a game genie or a pro action replay.
That's another option for sure.
A hardware clone console like the SupaRetron HD will also work (unless you already own a modded SNES)!
@@gamegab7271 it will but you will not have 100% games compatibility nor will you also have as authentic audio and video. Plus it's a heck of a lot more expensive
@@RoXolidFair enough. It’s not the only game (pardon the pun!) in town, but it’s one of many options!
Yeap those are cheaper options and I rather recommend those than anything requiring the opening of the Super NES.
Or, you could take a pair of plyers and break the tabs off. Takes 10 seconds and you cant tell unless youre looking for it.
If that doesn't bother you, terrific. I didn't want to, using your own words, break my system, which is why I designed it for myself first and offer it as an option for others. But more options is a bad thing I guess?
I get people don’t like hacking up their consoles but it’s literally something you can’t see.
And you can't see it in the Nintendo 64 either yet that region free mod has been around for years. It's just another option.
@@RoXolid I just don’t get the point of it.
@@TheManCaveYTChannel it's an option for people who don't want to cut up their systems and want to maintain the integrity of the original parts.
@@RoXolid the original parts that won’t be in the console anymore? That’s where I’m confused.
@@TheManCaveYTChannel they're not thrown away, so if someone wants to reverse the process they can easily and get a 100% stock unit again. You cannot reverse cutting your console
Or just get a Game Genie. And whalla, super famicom games play
Which still requires you to to spend money on a Game Genie, and then the games also sit above and not in the console. Just more options out there, and frankly this is a cleaner method for nearly the same price as a Game Genie.
Nice but not $28 nice. Sheesh.
What's a fair price in your estimation? Not criticizing, legit asking
Not to be a jerk but what is the point of this? Why would you not just break the little tabs off?
If you want to destroy it by hacking out the region tabs, sure. But there are many people who don't want to do that, don't want to damage their system, and would rather do something like this. If this is something for you, great. If it's not, great.
I also adress this at the end of the video in greater detail.
I get that, this isn't for everyone.
Man, nothing personal, but welcome to 1993, we've been cutting clean those "region lock" tabs since back in the day, and without the need to go trough all that hassle, that purist argument you bring on the end about the integrity of the console is lame, cutting the tabs is not breaking the console, thats doing the same thing you are doing.... modding it.... but without the extra hassle and unecesary money spending, also changing an original part for a digital printed one is not maintaining the integrity of the original pieces since you are literally taking them away.
This product is clearly not for you, and that's okay. At the same time people have been printing and installing these same types of trays on the Nintendo 64 for many years. Why? Because there are people who don't want to hack up their system. Doesn't bother you, I understand that, but it bothers me and it bothers others. At the same time I'm also one of those that doesn't download ROMs from the internet, plenty of other people do that. I am simply offering another option for those who would want it. And it is different than chopping up the internals of the stock pieces, for those who would want the originals if you would ever sell your system you can simply reinstall them. You can never reattach the stock component that you snip off
A lot of people prefer to cut mods as they are completely reversible.
@@CastleManiaGames no cut mods:)
@@RoXolidBack in 1991 it was super easy to file, melt or break off those two little plastic tabs that prevented the insertion of Famicom games. Same trick is possible with N64. Why anyone would want to do it your way is beyond me, 'hack up their system'? eyeroll. I guess you need to justify your scanner and printer to yourself somehow? I disliked the video and would like to submit a time refund request. I've told youtube to never recommend your channel to me. Have a sood day.
@@subliminal6969 Some people would rather not slice up their system and would rather maintain the integrity of the system. Different options are a bad thing for some though I guess
Just snap the tabs for free with pliers. It takes 30 seconds.
If you want to do that, fantastic, glad that suits your needs. Other people would rather not break their consoles and prefer no-cut mods such as this. More options are a great thing!!
🤨 just cut the tabs man, your not destroying anything.
You're. And yes, you are and if it doesn't bother you, terrific. There are those who would prefer not to damage and cut up their systems, and for those people this is now an option. Clearly it's not a product that appeals to you, and that's great. There are others that this does appeal to, and now the option exists.
@RoXolid Those tabs are what's causing the region locking since Japan and North America are both essentially NTSC. They could be taken off without damaging the US system since the Super Famicom doesn't even had them.
@@VOAN I know it's the tabs, no different than on the N64. This is another option that is a no cut option for people who do not want to damage their system irreversibly
