When Eric Roberts was young, in 1981, he was in a terrible car accident. He was in a coma for three days and had to have extensive surgery including his face. This video is before that accident. He also suffered other complications from that accident.

However, his addiction to drugs caused him severe damage, impacting both his health and appearance. When Eric became a father, he wasn’t in a condition to take on that responsibility because he was still struggling with addiction. Kelly separated from him, and he didn’t get custody of his daughter, as even his sister sided with Kelly. Looking at it this way, Eric faced many difficulties in life, but despite everything, he remained a talented actor, working hard and continuing to do so to this day.

I remember back in the 70's when Eric Roberts starred in "King of the Gypsies", and he was almost universally acclaimed as the new John Travolta (who just had hit global superstardom with "Saturday Night Fever"). But then he made so many poor career choices that he never reached that level. Then his little sister, Julia, was the one that did achieve the superstardom that Eric sadly never reached.
Eric has a new memoir out and he apologized to his sister Julia for causing drama due to his drinking problems. He also didn't have a good relationship with his daughter, Emma Roberts when she was growing up. He has been trying to make amends with her too, hopefully they all find peace with each other.
