Awesome video!!!! Using a light bulb is a bit sketchy...maybe make a homemade mantel with a mineral oil bath. Also maybe put the water supply bottle for the condenser in an ice bath. Going a step further you could insulate the condenser bottle to help keep the cold water cold longer; though it is nice to be able to see what's going on and you would lose that if you insulated.
Most of this looks pretty sketchy. Bulb could be replaced with a jar. Burner with (mineral)oil or sand bath. Condenser tube with something like copper pipe or SS straws, alternatively a muck longer hose.
Having the tube in the cooler go down and then up again will pool the destillate in the tube, pressure will build up and you will have "bumping" in the bulb. Liquid in the cooler must flow through unobstructed, only downward!😊
at 9:54 there is a text at the bottom that says "clear distilled water from salt water", but from the looks of it, its just water with green food coloring. In the end it wasn't really a chemical that was being boiled, and if it was green colored salt water (for some reason), it would have been nice if he cleaned off the bulb in the end. In this reaction salt wouldn't have enough energy to turn into a gas/steam so when one constituent of the liquid solution has a lower boiling point it also has an equivalent lower cooling point (water) compared to the other constituent (salt). In the end if the bulb was filled with salt water, and he distilled clean water from salt water then there would be salt precipitate within the bottom of the bulb.
I don’t know, I imagine using a strong solvent like Dichloromethane could probably start to melt the plastic, possibly contaminating whatever you're doing.
then maybe don't distill chemicals that arent safe in a DIY distiller? If thats a concern, perhaps buying proper flasks, hoses, and condensers are a better fit for your needs
