at 5:58 you can use trails if placed the right way, but do it alternating so it wont shift the weught of the build
at 7:15 you can also use springs or tnt
with all settings 0

22:24 you can also use a motor or motor 2, nothing can be touching the the shaft and only the plate though

The half piston is a glitchy buggy thingy it's when you step on it it disconnects the piston and can glitch other players too by touching them

you dont have to set settings for locked motors. if they are unpowered it basically sets all settings to lowest by itself
