Well, I enjoyed the shit out of that. Fuck the haters. I don't know why she doesn't do more music like this. She's wasting what talent she has left on the music she tries to do nowadays, and that includes her back calalog, which she struggles to perform.
This was a good performance for hat year.. I still prefer the original rendition she did in 2012 though, it was much more simple and slower, she didn't sound so out of breath too.
She did much better than i expected, good cover! the piano player killed it thought, too busy, tried too much, made the backing muddled and ran over the chords. very capable technically but doesnt know how to play with a band.

First things first this is just a boring redition of the song, she doesn't do anything overly interesting with the melody and her improv scatting is what I'd expect from a highschool level student. Second this just doesn't capture the idea of the song at all. Lullaby of Birdland is one of my favorite pieces because of how gentle and sweet it is. It's not some sexy song like Fever about getting down with your honey. It's and intimate almost confession like piece and the main melody reflects that. Mariah makes the song punchy and loud when its really quite smooth, almost velvet like, and quiet. If you're looking for what this song should sound like, listen to the Yoko Kanno arrangement from Kids on the Slope. That is a truly masterful jazz arrangement and performance.

There are many parallels with Whitney Houston's vocal decline - they both forced their voices from the throat & neither of them ever really had any good, solid classical training as a foundation to preserve the voice. A person's voice with proper training should get better with age, not worse, & one's 30's-50's should be the peak years of a singer, not the declining ones. If MC had had intensive classical training, like opera singers, there is no reason why her voice wouldn't sound better now, rather than worse. MC's mother, is memory serves, was trained as a classical singer & I wonder if she ever taught her daughter anything with regard to voice, if anything at all. On the other hand, I read an interview some years back with Cissy Houston where she discussed having warned Whitney many times about not only over-doing it but also allowing her throat to do most of the work when singing. Classical singers almost always get better with age & they use their voices in ways no popular singer ever imagine.

Sarah Vaughan smoked crack, cigarettes & pot for years & never had the vocal decline Whitney had. Pop singers are forced to sing out of their range because pop music sounds better than way. That's why Mariah's voice is damaged. She really doesn't sound that bad here. Don't know why people are hating.
Mirage Carey a classic sign of someone who doesn't understands music. Music isn't just about hitting the right notes. If you're a classical musician and you hit 100% of the notes right you're a C- student. You still have to breath and support your voice correctly if you can manage that your a B- student. Add in interesting dynamics A- student. Do all of that and capture the emotion of the song and now you're an A+ student. That's just classical though. Now jazz. Interesting improve that doesn't just return back to the melody or focus on the tonic, mediant and dominate pitches. Adding your own tone and flare to the piece while still keeping the basic idea. Adding in more difficult vocal techniques such as belting, breathy tone and straight tone while still supporting and breathing correctly.
Mariah can’t swing which really surprises me. Lol this is just so so so so so so sos is bad lol . Her scatting isn’t so bad she just needs major help lol omg the second chorus is bad lol and I am her number one fan lol ... god made lanes too lol mariah . Not just stars omg lol 😂
