I leased a 2024 bZ4X AWD XLE model in the U.S. about 3 months ago. I had leased two RAV4s and a Highlander Hybrid before, so I’m a definite case of “This thing drives like what I’m used to.” The big revelation for me was the range. My only outlier was 237 on a full charge that was 100% Interstate Highway driving between 70-75 mph. The other big plus for the bZ4X (at least currently) is that Toyota Corporate is still subsidizing the Hell out of their 3-year lease deal, to the tune of $16,500 (including State & Federal tax credits). Comes down to $35,500 if I pay the full lease payments plus buy out at the pre-determined residual value (pre-tax). That’s on an MSRP of $47,989. Great review! There is no glovebox because the space in the dashboard is taken up by a radiant heating system. You have the same system on the driver side as well. The radiant system will create a nice ''heat bubble'' for the two front occupants. The big advantage of a radiant system is that it does not consume a lot of energy (no fan to push the heat) so the ''saved'' energy can be used to give the car more range.

You say that this car has a towing capacity of 1500Lbs, but on pages 230 & 231 of the 2024 BZ4X owner's manual it clearly says, "Your vehicle is not designed for trailer towing." Is this a case of Toyota just being overly cautious, because I would like to be able to pull a small trailer with this car?
@@wayneskelley6169 You are correct. Toyota decided to NOT rate this vehicle for towing. There are many speculations for that but the one I might find plausible is: Engineering and Design Choices: The bZ4X wasn't designed with towing in mind. Its platform, drivetrain, and cooling systems might not be optimized for the stresses of hauling. This could lead to potential damage or excessive wear and tear. I would advise against towing since insurance won't cover you in case of an incident and I apologize for misleading you
My dad is getting one of these cars. I have a question: How is the sound system on this car? I know you can get an upgraded JBL sound system with this car, but my dad didn’t get that one. Do you know how the stock 6-speaker sound system is?
@@_omnyx I find that some stock systems are quite good and sometimes just as good as some name brands. Also a lot of the name brands like Bose have different tiers, like Bose and Bose Premium. I will say that since the ride is pretty well insulated from outside noise, the stock system should be good but you're not going to get that deep base sound you would from a subwoofer
Towing is mentioned for the bZ4X in this video. I was under the impression that towing was not an option. This vehicle (FWD) is on my short list and I would be interested in towing with it if possible (I have a lightweight camper in mind).
According to Carsguide, The towing capacity of the 2024 Toyota BZ4X supports up to 750kg. This is a braked figure! The bZ4X can be equipped with towing attachments aftermarket since Toyota will only install an "activity mount" type of hitch. Personally if I am towing a camper... I would look at the VW ID4 which can come from the factory with a Tow hitch and ball and can tow 2700 lbs. I know that may not appeal someone who is looking at a Toyota but I would want to get it equipped with a hitch straight from purchase.
I have ordered a FWD with a tow here in Sweden. So it should be possible to order it on other markets as well. Funny enough I also had a light camper in mind 😂
@@henriklarsson7835 trust me when I say... We get ripped off over here very often when it comes to vehicle options lol. Europe as a whole has features and models well before we get them. Prime example right now, VW ID BUZZ... We don't have it
Absolutely. Charging speed ✅ Range improved ✅ Charging information on the driver instrument cluster ✅ I personally wouldn't have given a good review to last year's model because it charged way too slow. I also met an owner of a bZ4X who switched from a Tesla model Y and he says he gets 400km and up of range with his bZ4X. Long story short, I am also considering this as my next vehicle but the VW ID4 is also very good all around so those are my top 2 for the price and overall usability.
Having driven the Subaru Solterra, I liked the Solterra steering wheel better but prefer the BZ4X solid grey seats better and the Toyota Care package. Unfortunately, the Solterra has more features as standard that lean in its favor.
@@markus6635 I just talked to an owner of a 2024 bZ4X two days ago at a charging station and he says he gets about 430km. I think the people complaining about the range are referring to previous model years and they would have been right but a lot has changed and I think the 2024 MY is definitely worth a look.
They've still got a LOOOONG way to go... Here's the facts: A GENEROUS comparison to the Tesla Model 3 LR RWD finds the BZ4X (depending on trim) has the same cargo capacity, 111-119 miles less range, 20-30% slower charging, no rear screen, $900 higher average 10-year maintenance/repair cost (by brand), 3-8 fewer speakers, 1-3 fewer subs, 1 fewer amp, general warranty covers 1 year/14k miles less, drivetrain warranty covers 3 years/60k miles less, slower, still no Supercharger network access, no FSD, all for $10k HIGHER price... Completely insane. And if you really need SUV clearance, the comparison to the Model Y is similar, just with way more cargo space and no rear screen and worse audio (since MY hasn't yet been updated).
The one caveat is that here's a HUGE disparity between the buy and lease prices and I can't make sense of it. The lease prices on the Toyota website look great - better than Tesla - but then I look at any of the advertised dealer leases and they're 60-100% higher and say they require $20k down-payment! WtF is this? 😵 If you can actually get it for the website lease price, that would be the only rational reason for buying this hunk of junk.
@@catbert7 this is really depending on your area. In Canada, Tesla has not been reducing their prices, therefore the model 3 is more expensive than the bZ4X, has worst thermal management therefore winter range is terrible and let's not kid ourselves, the people shopping or looking at the bZ4X are NOT the same that are shopping for a Tesla. The bZ4X has relatively the same tech, same way to drive as an ICE and no learning or adaptation curve. Tesla buyers are looking for the complete opposite with lots of tech and very minimal hard controls.

@@samjam6989 ID4 gets my vote and .... (Spoiler alert) We will likely do a show on why it's our pick as the EV of the year. That being said, in our area, an AWD ID4 will cost you more than AWD bZ4X and I would argue that people shopping for the ID4 are not the same as those shopping for the bZ4X. The ID4 has very little physical buttons and it's more high tech meanwhile the bZ4X is pretty much the same as an ICE vehicle but it's an EV.
@@Outsider.ReviewsI don’t know what you mean when you say that the BZ4X is the same as an ICE vehicle. I don’t know of any other Toyotas that have such an awful infotainment system. All the Toyotas I’ve seen have normal knobs and switches for the climate and stereo. They didn’t even give this a volume knob. I’d say the BZ4X is for Toyota loyalists who want an EV and either don’t know or don’t care that it is inferior to the competition or people who buy or lease for a good deal. Around town this is good reliable transportation, so if that’s all you need and you get this cheaply then it’s just fine. I’m not a fan of the ID4 due to the asinine controls going from the window switches to the haptic steering wheel and the sliders on the infotainment, but they did make big improvements to the horsepower and the infotainment programming. I don’t think Toyota will make the same sort of improvements as I believe they are happy to have an EV that says “EV’s suck”.
If the bZ4X can manufacture and sell 10,000 units per month, the sales price can be reduced by 10%, and if it can sell 100,000 units, the sales price can be reduced by 20%. To achieve this, an EV manufacturing plant must be built and a supply chain for procurement of parts must be established. However, if contrary to expectations, the bZ4X sells only 3,000 units per month, Toyota will suffer huge losses; GM/Ford has lost billions of dollars due to poor EV sales. Toyota hopes to manufacture the bZ4X at its existing plant and sell it to early adopters of the bZ4X without investing in EVs. Unlike EV-only companies, Toyota will not go bankrupt even if 10,000 cars a year last 10 years thanks to hybrid sales. I'm Japanese.
If Toyota were to take seriously the opinion that prospective buyers who are considering purchasing an EV will buy it if it improves on its inferiority compared to Tesla, and if Toyota were to sell such a car, it would incur enormous damage.
I understand. There used to be a time where innovation came at a financial loss in the beginning and that was acceptable but it seems now, with investors and such, that innovation is not allowed to incur a loss and with that kind of thinking... I just feel like we will not advance as fast as we can or even advance at all. We are seeing companies move backwards and revert to prioritizing ICE vehicles
Toyota can sell ugly cars and this one is ugly inside and out. But they put a small battery in it, smaller than all the competition so that it has the worst range. They do not want to make or sell many of these because they don’t believe in them. We’ll know when Toyota is serious, hopefully it won’t be too late.
@@Outsider.Reviews I own a RAV4 Prime and it’s awesome. Way ahead of the competition. That’s what you get when Toyota cares. I’m sad that they haven’t bothered making a good EV and that includes the Lexus model. However, for the right price the RZ450e would be kind of sweet if you didn’t want to go long distances. But still a pretty sad car for the MSRP.
@@Molishious especially when putting more into innovation of the EV department will also further PHEV technologies. A small battery can be good if you increase charging speed above 350kwh. Then you would get the range back in 10 minutes but that requires upgrading current infrastructure as well. If you go too big of a battery like the hummer EV... It becomes too heavy for what you get out of it
@@Outsider.Reviews My impression is that most people have decided that 250 miles range is the minimum acceptable amount. When you go below that you lose most people in the EV market. I could understand if Toyota put in the same size battery as the competition but just wasn’t efficient enough to get the range people want, but they went ahead and put in a battery smaller than what the ID4, MachE, Ioniq5/EV6, Equinox EV, Nissan Ariya have. So they have the worst range with the lowest horsepower in the AWD than any of the competition. I own a RAV4 Prime and it’s awesome, so I have a lot of respect for Toyota and when they make a car as underwhelming as the BZ4X I have to think it’s on purpose, not incompetence. I’m hoping with increasing battery energy density we’ll see the range in PHEV’s go up. The 42 + range in my Prime covers me 90 % of the days, but on weekends when I go out of town, I wouldn’t mind for it to go 100 miles and fast charge. However, I’ve decided my next car will be an EV, it just probably won’t be a Toyota.

Awesome review. I am currently looking at the Ioniq 5 and the Bz4X and this was really helpful and informative.
Range, reliability and rear wiper are currently three criteria that will affect my final choice (more like, which ones I don’t mind to sacrifice ;))
Thanks!
@@kamest the bZ4X is worthy consideration. I would not of said that for previous MY but 2024 had good upgrades including range which was lackluster but the Ioniq 5 has the better range. It all depends on which one you fall in love with really
@@gillesgagnon9585 this some great insight! Thank you very much for this comment.
@@gillesgagnon9585 so it doesn’t have a heat pump?

There’s a compressor in the panel on the right side of the trunk. There’s also a pull out tray in the center console. More space below. Space to store your napkins. 😂. It looks like the frunk space is even less in the ‘24 model with the additional battery heating mechanicals.

Great review❤ I am in the market for one.
@@chevy1500c I was definitely surprised by the bZ4X because it was getting a lot of bad reviews but it's an efficient EV. It all depends on the buyer, if you like it, if it fits in your lifestyle and such.
They’re selling like hot cake here in SoCal. Dealers can’t keep them in their lots!
@@lazarorodriguez9235 I went to my local dealer for an XLE and they didn't have any. They had some LE but in the north, you need AWD which is why those are not selling lol.
There are many speculations for that but the one I might find plausible is:
Engineering and Design Choices: The bZ4X wasn't designed with towing in mind.

Did Toyota solve previous model issues in 2024?
Absolutely.
Charging speed ✅
Range improved ✅
Charging information on the driver instrument cluster ✅
I personally wouldn't have given a good review to last year's model because it charged way too slow.
That's good insight, thank you for sharing. Since I have not reviewed the Solterra, is there any other differences that jumps out between the two?
Great review
Thank you
Some complain about the range, think its about the same as a Porsche Taycan. As always, its not a problem since its a Porsche.
Toyota in the US are now offering a 36 month lease, $3999 down which includes first lease payment . Lease payment is $219 a month. 2024 bZ4X 4WD Wagon XLE Electric ..Mileage limited to 10,000 miles a year. Model 2872. This model has 4 wheel drive..

@@mohammadamer149 it's a big decision. I like how it drives, I don't like the driver instrument cluster location but if that doesn't bother you, it's a good choice. What I like the most, is that of all the EVs I have driven this year, this one is the most efficient. Meaning it used less electricity to travel the same distance as other EVs. It impressed me with It's efficiency.

The ID4 has very little physical buttons and it's more high tech meanwhile the bZ4X is pretty much the same as an ICE vehicle but it's an EV.
....and probably less reliable
@@sergelucalikasi which is less reliable?

@@Molishious it's still a big improvement over last year's but yes I would like to see more from Toyota and more models
