The CHIESA DI GESÙ (Church of Jesus) is one of the most important churches in Rome and a masterpiece of the Baroque style. Located in the historic center near Piazza Venezia, it is known as the mother church of the Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits.
Historical Background
• It was built between 1568 and 1584 based on a design by Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola, with later modifications by Giacomo della Porta.
• The construction was financed by Saint Philip Neri and Alessandro Farnese, a powerful cardinal of the time.
• The church is dedicated to the Most Holy Name of Jesus, as expressed in its full name: Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus at the Argentina.
Architecture
• Facade: Designed by Giacomo della Porta, it became a model for Baroque architecture, featuring a simple yet elegant design.
• Interior: It has a single nave with richly decorated side chapels. The interior is a spectacle of elaborate decorations, fine marble, and frescoes.
• Dome: Decorated with frescoes by Giovanni Battista Gaulli, also known as Baciccio, depicting the “Triumph of the Name of Jesus.”
Artistic Features
• The fresco on the central vault, The Triumph of the Name of Jesus, is one of the masterpieces of Baroque art. It depicts the Name of Jesus radiating light and glory, surrounded by angelic figures and the damned falling into hell.
• The main altar is richly adorned and holds relics of Jesuit saints like Saint Francis Xavier.
• The Chapel of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, features a spectacular funerary monument.
Fun Facts
• Every day, around 5:30 PM, in the Chapel of Saint Ignatius, there is a multimedia presentation about the saint’s life, culminating in the dramatic unveiling of the altar painting.
