      No matter who makes it, the issue with cassettes in my mind is that after a couple of years, they all get fiddley. At some point my deck was constantly needing to go back to get calibrated. In A/B comparisons, even though my deck could reproduce full response and at high speed had enough density to reproduce fine details, the increase in distortion (most decks range between 1/2 - 3%) was audible, although I did not know what was that bugged me at the time. I have since figured it out. So cassettes can't replace dedicated listening to me. I'd like to try a reel to reel but they are too rich for my blood for a deck that would be good enough for critical listening. And master tapes are way past my ability.

      So, why bother with cassettes again? I grew up with them, and they can sound great, but vinyl is still a superior analog format.
      Cassettes bested vinyl in convenience, but then the CD came along and crushed it.
      Now, if they came out with direct to tape from analog masters, that would pique my interest, but then I'd prefer that to be in the larger Reel to Reel format. Just my millennial opinions lol

      @@asplmn I like the idea of making an optimum recording of a brand new record and then using the tape for listening. Then when the tape wears out, record it again. That would minimize wear and pops and clicks on the record.

      A poor man's "reel to reel" for sure. I still have two Hi-Fi decks that do this helically and it works well, but I think the masses want cassettes instead for both nostalgia and for the new prerecorded cassettes being offered.

      Yeah, I used to mess around with music on HiFi VCR's. The problem with them is you have to deal with the large bulky tapes for a VCR. I couldn't even begin to imagine how much wall space would be occupied in my house if all I used was VHS tapes instead of Cassettes.

      @@AudioGuyBrian yeah, too bulky. I used it as a way to temporarily record long late-night radio shows (Think Grateful Dead stuff) or other concerts via satellite (I had one of those huge 12' backyard dishes in the 1980s/90s). I could record two hours of great audio, then re-record it to cassette taking out the D.J. banter and commercials. Worked well.

    Call me a cynic, but considering Mulann's track record with hardware (Remember Mystik?), I don't expect anything that exceeds the quality of the very mediocre Tascam 202, which basically is two Tanashin mechanisms wrapped in a tascam shell. Unless Mulann/RTM actually develop a new mechanism (which I doubt at this point), a new tapehead design, while it would be a good thing, won't be able to fix the currently available Tanashin mechanism's issues.
    What makes me so sceptical is the Mystik Portable Cassette Player disaster. It was basically a standard chinese low-end portable design repackaged in a fancy case, but three times as expensive. That's probably why it failed the kickstarter, and the RTM and Mulann people were very aggressive towards critics, which probably didn't help. So for now, I really hope they learned from their mistakes, but at this point in time I expect more of the same. I'll be happy to be positively surprised.

    • @rosswarren436

      It is frustrating. You'd think all the documentation needed to make say a Pioneer, Sony, or Denon, Yamaha, or other mechanism would be available, and they could be made once again using new suppliers for the parts. I wish. And decent heads with good performance. Someone in the comments above said a head "dm62" was available, but I don't know its specifications...

    • @jimboblivesforever
      @jimboblivesforever 2 роки тому +1

      @@rosswarren436 My guess is that the big players just don't see new high quality cassette decks as something that could actually make them a profit. And as far as licensing old mechanisms, it's probably the same thing. Let's be honest, while there is indeed a cassette comeback, it is still a rather niche thing, even compared to vinyl. And for a new player in the market, the investment into research, tooling or production facilities do develop something entirely new is likely very daunting.

      @@hugobloemers4425 FR depends on the heads, yes. Without good capable heads, we have nothing. And the generic heads that are both for PB/REC (for 2head machines) will not cut it. Their gap is "optimized" (too big for HF on playback, too narrow for bass response on record, not to mention they are cheap permaloy with even more FR losses) to work for both recording and playback, so they are not good at either. There are some fairly good NOS Japanize heads, but they will be gone eventually, and there aren't enough of them for a new production of "HQ cassette decks". All of this is ofc important if we want at least 20hz-20khz capable decks.
      And auto-reverse is a detriment to quality playback/recording for variety of reasons, unless is unrealistically overengineered, which will not happen ever again. Quality over "convenience" any day. I would be fully happy with single capstan DD mechanism, and 2 heads, if it means at least the W&F would not be as embracingly bad as it is right now with all new devices.

    "Imperfect Sound Forever". Lol! Analog can never be perfect. The trick is to take it to a level as close to perfect as possible and manage the imperfections. Some imperfections make music sound more endearing, think about quality tube amplication and high-quality well pressed LPs of great analog recordings. But the cassette at 1 & 7/8 IPS with those small magnetic tracks? Kind of like setting foot on the moon mankind (specifically electronic and mechanical engineers) had performed a similar feat by the late eighties with the lowly Compact Cassette, a Philips invention originally never envisioned as something particularly high-fidelity. That's when progress stopped, heck everything stopped. Not a single audiophile level cassette deck has ben made since roughly 1990. All decks made since have been mostly the same crappy quality only outwardly dressed as different tape machines. They're literally the "insult to injury" to the medium's demise. Only, a lot of folks either didn't get or refused to read that decree of death memo Sadly, however, the ones who could make new machines encompassing over three-decades of electric and mechanical advancements have no financial interest in doing so. Not unlike the stalling of the pharmaceutical industries research into new antibiotics (to get this back on track there had to be a crisis as well as government incentives), bringing a new more advanced than ever audiophile cassette deck is dead. This interesting video came out in January with the hope that it was real and in just a couple of months there would be an exciting announcement for new Hi-Fi approved decks. It is now six-months later and I smell the scent of death. Nuclear fusion power plants will probably be rolled out before we ever see a truly fantastic cassette deck comparable to the likes of the best Nakamichi, Pioneer, Tandberg, Yamaha, Aiwa, and Studer made decks in the eighties. That smell also has the fragrance of this information being a false alarm I'm sorry to say. You can't fault a guy for dreaming though.

      It will probably do well if it's as good as a low end Sony or Pioneer type hi fi separates deck from the 80s or 90s. It won't get close to your Revox.

    My Pioneer 606 sounds to me like a good machine like the Sony i had before that. Think there were many good machines during the 90s, tapes were good too....but my machines.....i think they were and are just avarage? They are not exceptional so other decks must have sounded even better. Tried some tapes and they sound fresh open,only a Memorex metal tape from 84 sounded dull even with dolby off which is strange for a metal tape recorded with dolby on. Basf super chrome 2 sounded great like all other chromes from Maxell,TDK,Sony, and Thats i bought these days.. Wouldn't surprise me if other chromes sound great too.
    The tape era stopped in 2000 and not because they are bad products
    Cassettes, most are pleasant sounding products..
    New decks? Buy a 90s model, cheaper than a new one.

    The problem should be the mechanism not the tape head. There are already basic tape heads like dm62 or similar things still producting since 80s or 90s. But the tape mechanism is definitly been down grade since there are no need for high grade decks. In this era. A CNC bulid full direct driven mech should not be a big problem to make. But it will cost tons of money and I dont think most enthusiasts will pay crazy money for that.

    • @QUADBOYification
      @QUADBOYification 2 роки тому

      I think a lot more is possible now with SOLID STATE HEADS like the Philips DCC Decks had. Like a CCD camera sensor easily made on wavers and manufactured with a glass shell. Problem is the BIAS that needs probably a new name for this kind of flat head and its function. It basically becomes a BACKUP DRIVE with separate pads (coils with a gap) for record and playback. No fantasy, really.

    • @anadialog
      @anadialog  2 роки тому

      The transpprt mechanism is easy to do. Not complicated at all. We simply don't have it now but it is easy to make. Quality tape heads is one of the most difficult and expensive things to do. I know because I spoke with a true expert on this. The lamination process of quality heads is something that can't be done from one day to another, you need a set of other manufacturers in order to achieve a quality head like a permalloy, sendust etc etc. Plus it has to reach at least a 20hz-20khz frequency response.

    I hope I am wrong but I have a feeling these new decks will just be similar to what Teac/Tascam currently produce. It's unlikely that any company is going to go all in making their own mechanisms so they will in all likelihood use the same CSG mechanisms Teac/Tascam uses. That isn't such a bad thing as the Teac/Tascam decks do a decent job in terms of reliability and features, it's the heads and the plasticky flywheel that lets the mechanism's performance down, so if they could work with the manufacturer to improve those things we could get something very decent. I doubt we'll see Dolby making a comeback but given there is a software Dolby B/C encoder/decoder available it might be possible to have those included in the OS of a new deck.

Was finding good slightly used ones at a st. vinnies dig and save but somebody waits at the door to open and gets those now. Used to find a dozen with a radio program recorded on them with just a few play backs if any it was a true bargain find. That guy is a scourge because he also did that with the electronics he just pulled everything of the shelves and filled his shopping carts. 15 minutes after opening nothing left. Currently available mechanisms and 4 track heads used in Walkman clones could easily be adapted to work as a 4 track portastudio style machine for very little investment. Towards the end of the cassettes life manufactures of high speed duplication equipment experimented with PWM magnetic recording and this allowed for a much greater MOL and audio fidelity. The transport mechanism is one of the most important. Most cassette decks currently on the market use a similar if not the same cheap-o transport. Yes. Tape heads are important, especially for running tape types which have historically been more abrasive.
    When I hear that TDK is putting the SA and SA-X back into production or Maxell and their UD-XL I and II, I will take notice.
    French? Can the French do anything right? They have never been able to get their car brands mainstream in the U.S. Their latest attempt is through the conglomerate Stellantis, joining FIAT who has almost already taken the Chrysler brand down.
    No. If it's French, it won't sell in the U.S. It's gonna take a Tascam, Sony or Pioneer to make cassette viable in the U.S. again.
    Sure, new pre-recorded cassettes are popping up again, but so are 8-track cartridges and R2R tapes, but those are at 15 i.p.s. There never were many R2R decks which play at 15 i.p.s. Then, there are the prices. Who can afford this stuff?
