I came down that Hollow Stones route age 69. Horrible when wet. Ascended via the Lingmell Beck up to Styhead Tarn then the Corridor route. Took me 8 hours with lunch break on summit! Definitely brutal.

Great job, and informative video. I’m going up tomorrow as a first timer, wasdale head route. I’ll be happy if I summit, getting up and down within 5 hours. A slow plod for me ☺️

Thank you. The Wasdale Head route is non stop to the top pretty much. But a slow plod will do you fine👍 good luck and enjoy!

The right hand path is much more difficult & exhilarating, it's an intital path into a scramble up loose scree, into proper rock climbing. Then it levels off at an edge, which you take a left at, and it leads to the summit. Thoroughly enjoyable.

That sounds like the logical next step. I'd definitely like to try harder routes, even learn to climb!

@terran3an1981 Have a go if you can, it was great when I went up a week back! :)

@@ominous7271 I will certainly add it to my list for when I'm up that way next. Think I saw someone give it a go in winter. Looks like a nice challenge too.

I've certainly had my share of the Wasdale route. Served its purpose but will be looking at other routes for next time. Corridor definitely on the list.

Enjoy! Gotta do more than a quick trip up there this year. Really enjoy the place.

Love Scaffel. Such a beautiful mountain. Be careful of that last section on the way back down. Just before the carpark the paths seem to spread in every direction and found myself on the wrong path, wasn't a huge issue, but can certainly add an unexpected 30/45min if you get too diverted.

Wish I could have seen more of it! Does seem like Scafell has more risk with path options and getting lost. Though Snowdon/Yr Wyddfa has a habit of the path just disappearing. On the PYG route anyway.

Well done. I went via Mickledore, which was a tough scramble for my little legs. 😁

@terran3an1981 I am glad I did it. You just have to be careful of loose scree on the steep part leading up to the boulder section, then some big arm and leg clamber up the gully . You would probably make it look easy. I would not recommend beginners. (That is the right fork off of the main path).

The Wasdale route you took is the shortest but there are much nicer ways to do Scafell Pike. Seathwaite to Sprinkling Tarn and Esk Hause is a fine route but the most dramatic way would be from upper eskdale. If you want to avoid the hordes then Scafell is a better bet via Lord's Rake and the west wall traverse. Just my opinion but the route everyone uses from Wasdale is just a bit of a plod and there are more entertaining routes available.

@@justinradford4858 thanks for the route suggestions. The route from Wasdale Lake head was, as you said, shortest and chosen for that reason for a quicker time on the day of the challenge. I like the sound of the Lord's Rake route and will be trying to attempt it both before and during winter. Stay tuned 👍

Is there a rumour about a mass of ore near the summit that creates a deflection on a compass?

    • @Cragrat65
      @Cragrat65 3 місяці тому

Only "possibly" experienced it once in 1991 threw me off a decent by a few degrees in poor light and and heavy mist.

That's a new one on me. Interesting though if true! I have not had issues when I've been up there but, I'll be honest, I'm usually using GPS.

Not heard of one on the Scafell ridge, but there is a very well known one just round the corner on the other side of Esk Pike. It is called Ore Gap. Aptly named.
