The production of the F-18 was split between McDonnell Douglas and Northrop. The F-18 featured a strengthened airframe, landing gear and tail hook, but based completely on Northrop's YF-17 design.

It was originaly designed to compete against YF-16. Although it is (design speaking) similar to F-18, they are not technically much related.
