There was a public consultation available for everyone to have a say and vote. Opinion polls across the country consistently show a 2:1 majority in favour of 20mph limits and perhaps the most compelling evidence is that house prices go up when 20mph zone are created because that is what people want and are prepared to pay for it.
@ditch3827 drakeford and the Welsh government paid a company to do a survey. They surveyed 1000 people so hardly a wide survey when we have a population of over 3 million and they have no details over who was surveyed. Age, occupation, location etc
It was a public consultation and therefore open to every member of the public. But aside from that the fact that house prices rise when 20mph zones are put in shows that it is what people want and what people are prepared to pay for.

Only an idiot would be against it in built up areas and outside schools etc but what they implemented isn't that.
I live in Wormit Fife, Fife council have done this here. From the Tay Bridge through to the end of the village over 3 miles. It a joke its never adhered to. The police said they are not going to monitor this road as there has never been an accident. They also said they are powerless to do anything. Yes despite doing this for safety they allowed Persimmon homes to build and 200 homes at the end of village, another 200 cars now speeding up and down. Not only cars, school buses, fife council bins lorries, tractors, large hgv's,taxis.,as this is the only road through.1 big joke and waste of money.
I do 30 still because I ride a motorbike not a car and the manifesto states car if labour wanted to have all vehicles do 20 then they should of said in its manifesto
Having driven through parts of Wales last week with the 20mph limits I can say its not been thought out especially well. You do end up in a lower gear so emissions will be higher overall or the car will be labouring in many cases. Our Automatic by default uses a lower gear. So the emissions argument is not especially good. 20mph on smaller side roads in housing estates could be seen as a safety benefit and I think with the narrower roads in estates this is where it would show the most benefit. But larger main routes through towns had the 20mph limits too which only lead to slower through flow and increased emissions due to vehicles taking longer to pass through those areas using lower gears and at a point where the car, van or lorry is not running efficiently. Increased times for journeys may be annoying and cause frustration when there is little need for them to do so with the points above showing the 20mph limits should be more localised and targeted. There is a point where the average speeds start to become more like congestion and the problems that causes and why cities now charge for vehicles to use those areas. 30mph is not ideal on some areas where dual carriageways have been using 40mph for years and now slowed them to 30mph. For the same reasons. If it is due to safety issues and regular accidents in those areas then there may be a case for looking at options to increase safety in those areas before the speed limit is the blanket answer to stopping accidents. Better signage, clearing obstructive trees and bushes from those areas if visibility is a cause, widening the roads, pavements etc and if those are not an option where speed is not the root cause of those accidents, change the speed limit as a last resort. Keep traffic through flow on the roads efficient and smooth. Even issues like due to more "careful" driving less cars passing though traffic lights so more time is spent waiting at lights will increase pollution not ease it.
Yep,not only are emissions greater at 20 than 30, your MPG will also be less. This is a law imposed by ppl who dont know how an engine works. Mr Drakeford doesnt even drive. This has been driven by political ideology and ignorance and is an oportunity to impose fines on generally law abiding ppl.
There has never been any evidence supporting the claim that lower speeds reduces injury/death. Conversely, many studies exist which evidence limiting speed either has zero impact or INCREASES the number of injury/death.
Many parts of England, including Swindon, applied 20 mph limits to a lot of residential areas years ago. Where the new Welsh system differs is that it sets the default urban limit to 20mph. On a recent trip to Wales, this seemed to be inconvenient when on the A489 at Church Stoke but completely appropriate when on the A493 at Aberdyfi. Over time, I expect local Welsh councils will set more appropriate speed limits for the main routes through urban areas, where this has not already been done.

The community should rally to black out or cut down every sign. They don't want people driving cars or paying for roads, if they can upset and annoy people to not, the plan is working.
Bus journeys are now regularly disrupted. I get home an average of 20 mins later each night as a result (I get a bus to and from work) 20% of bus services later in the day on my bus route seem to canceled due to lateness as a result of the 20 mph limit. I go to work each day not knowing if I'll be able to get home without having to spend extra money that I can ill afford to do.
Counsellor Ian Robert’s could quite easily forge a resounding career as a cure for insomnia. What a boring nitpicking response to what is a real problem for the Welsh people in general, delivery workers, and those involved in getting around the community as part of their role in particular
It's not a coincidence that it's mostly old people who agree with the 20mph, I guess that's because when they're driving at 30mph, they think they're doing 140mph.
I live on the wirral but I can not see anyone adhering to the 20mph on the Wirral. Unless the council can finance the police to enforce every new 20mph road it will never be 20mph and any forthcoming data based on their 20mph speed restrictions will be flawed.
😂The manifesto said it will lower the speed to 20 mph for Cars in areas where lots of people live so if you drive a bus lorry van motorbike you can do 30 as the manifesto states clearly cars not vehicle's
