I'm using my daughter's comment box tonight. I was in high school when this song came out and it became my anthem as the war on drugs went on within me. I think it was on a John Kay album. It's Never Too Late came to mind tonight and I realize the "war" is over 44 years old yet it still encourages me. I also found Savoy Brown's "Tell Mama." When I come across songs that spoke to me in my youth, no matter what happened, it is like an old friend --- its a happy feeling to be reunited.
A great song from one of the most under-rated bands ever. I grew up on their messages. Their lyrics actually had meaning. And the music was second to none. Great band.
Everyone should listen to the LYRICS in this song, READ the lyrics....and then you will appreciate the genius of this song, such a beautiful, touching song that makes you think about what Life is all about, and why you might question your own life values, question your own character. WOW, this is a SONG !!
Im 45 ..my dad had the 16 greatest hits in his 70 roadrunner on 8 track..had me hooked..i can still listen to it without skippin one song..seen them in erie pa at roar on shore few yrs ago..artpark last yr..for a guy in his mid 70s .jonny kay can still rock
RIP Goldy McJohn (Steppenwolf keyboardist, responsible for that distinctive organ sound on so many of their songs), who died Aug. 1 of this year (2017), age 72, of a heart attack.
Thanks John & the pack for a true poetic observation of American family life & how it was,as well as it is now most likely in many families in this time right now. John Kay,you are the "audio Hyroglyphics " that will be uncovered by - ? thanks for the Tenderness. Rooster
Did not know he was legally blind as they were my favorite band then and very underrated. Always loved the way they just kept grinding out the same great music album after album. Was supposed to see them in 71, but a huge snowstorm made almost all traffic come to a standstill. So I was never able to see them.
@murphrey Actually, John Kay, a German, was a baby during World War Two (Born in 1944). When the Soviets were overrunning Eastern Germany on their drive to Berlin his mother fled westward with him in severe winter conditions. They settled in Arnstadt, which became part of Soviet controlled East Germany. In 1948 they escaped from East Germany, to Hanover West Germany (as recounted in his song "Renegade" on the album Steppenwolf Seven). I've seen John several times in concert. Great guy.
The ultimate sixties song, I don't care anything about John Kays history really, I just know him and his crew were some very insightful writers, one of my all time favorites, ever!!! They frigging wrote the theme song for Easyrider which pretty much was the anthem for the whole sixties counter-culture. Snow Blind Friend is my favorite though!!! Great job on the slide show!!!
i saw an interview with John Kay recently on youtube. i never knew what he went through and how much he had to overcome. I just listened to his music when i was younger and didnt know what all the lyrics were and meant, but i sure do now. His life is amazing. Interview on a show called Rising Above. so awesome
This band had a couple hits...rock classic staples to be sure....but they were tragically overlooked in the long run. Hall of Fame? They earned it. Why not? There are others in there who in my opinion have a bit less reason for being...but that's just me. And yeah, I always dug this band.
MY UNCLE HAD A BAND BACK IN THE LATE 60S IN BAKERSFIELD CALIF AN HE KNEW THESE GUYS MATTER OF FACT JOHN KAYE JAMMED WITH HIM AN HIS BAND A FEW TIMES!!! I WAS LIKE 5 A THE BUG BIT ME BIG TIME!!!!! LONG LIVE PURE ROCK !!!!!
Yes, lyrics so full of the truth that it makes you uneasy at first, then realize how brilliant John Kay and Steppenwolf really were with songs like this. Beautiful and meaningful music to make you think and reeducate yourself. College/University degrees hanging on the wall? Bull. How you treat your friends is worth everything.
The "Thinking Man's Band" as they were referred to way back . . . ooh, so good! Love that intense, high-minded love and emotion. Of course, like Hesse's Steppenwolf (Herman Haller), they also had a taste for something akin to S & M sometimes -- (think of the lyrics to "Ball Crusher" on Steppenwolf 7) -- what a Tantric band! "Transcending via the senses to infinite compassion and love." (Or something along those lines!). Wish I could do that! :-D
Too bad people of the world can't find this in their hearts, and realize, we can live in peace, but evil men won't let us. We fight wars because of a few evil men, wouldn't it be much less painfull, to just remove the evil, and not kill each other. But thats the key, the evil must be removed, to achieve that peace.
You see you’ve got one life to live and when your dead your gone! Your family comes to your grave and with tears in their eyes they tell you you’ve done something wrong, Left Us Alone!
Yeah I agree people get sorta brainwashed with what they hear on the TOP what ever,. Sometimes they don't have the ambition to flip the" album" over to the B side and hear what the performer or artist really wants you to hear.
Eerily prophetic song to a guy working in aerospace by day college at night and ended up in motorcycle club in Ca.. usta drive my brothers crazy playing this at the clubhouse. I knew too deep for many. These guys were geniuses
Amazing- the lyric about the degree hanging on the wall is so perfect for those of us who graduated college and are still struggling to get a foot in the door. Did these guys have a time machine or something?
The message in this song is (1:) So basic and simple, (2 :) So powerful and beautiful, (3:) So lifesaving and true... and I'm fairly certain that I've only touched the surface. Even without one taking the words to heart, my personal opinion is that (if it needs to be "pigeonholed") it's one of the best blues-rock-folk-inspirational songs ever conceived and performed - possibly even getting through to people on the verge of "eating a 44 caliber lunch". And even though I'll get "crucified" for my thoughts regarding the comments here, one of the biggest problems dividing mankind is religion - they mostly all focus on "If you have different beliefs, then you are wrong and going to Hell". Though I was raised a Christian (and still love them) I can no longer worship Christ. I focus now on my believe in GOD and *spirituality*, and realize that I cannot tell you or anyone else who/what/which is "right". Anyway, this masterpiece and Steppenwolf are both great & greatly underrated. Love, peace, and rock 'n' roll my friends!
Sad that you have abandoned the only true God, Jesus Christ. Though you claim to have been raised a Christian it appears you haven't studied or just plain don't understand the word of God. I challenge you to study the book of Revelation. You will find that the deception that you are suffering from was clearly predicted over 2000 years ago. Also, the current condition on planet earth was foretold as well. satan is the greatest liar in the history of time, he was created by God and was given far greater intelligence than we humans possess. he doesn't fabricate simple easily detectable lies. All other religions other than Christianity are simply intricate well thought deceptions to steer humans into hell. I am not judging you, I simply care about your eternal disposition. God allows free will for humans, if you choose to reject the only true God, Jesus Christ, he will honor your decision and allow you to spend eternity in hell with satan and the other fallen angels. I too am a fan of Steppenwolf. If you have never heard the song "from here to there eventually" , please give it a listen. The song discusses false religion and states that the true God, Jesus Christ, will return and that we "better be ready for his return". GOD Bless you in JESUS mighty name!
Brother you're correct on so many levels, except one. It was never meant to be "you don't believe in Christ, you're going to hell". Gods love is Eternal. God is love. When we reach the gates of Death, that love will either feel good to you, or torment you. Whether it feels good or not to you would be determined by the type of person you are and your actions here in this life. That's the teaching of the Eastern Orthodox Church, unchanged in its thinking since the time of Christ and the Apostles. The first version of Christianity, if you will. Check it out brother, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
When I wrote the comment I fully expected, as noted within, that I would receive replies such as I have. I will not challenge any of these opinions, nor the thoughts of anyone else's. One of the most important lessons God has taught me was to keep my mind open. Although I might not follow Jesus as such, I shall gladly walk beside Jesus to and through God's kingdom be I so fortuned to have God's blessing. Again, I realize I've opened that same door to get more comments from those that believe differently and again I pledge I shall not challenge their thoughts and beliefs - so may I ask the same courtesies in return, and perhaps pray that we all are able to walk together? I wish to comment of our differences no more when we should instead be praying and doing for those that really need it the most. Thank you to those who will respect this request, and love and peace to all.
JustThePretender, thank you for your well thought out words & opinions. I, too, am a Christian & when asked if I'm "Religious" I vehemently deny that, as it connotes silliness like certain rituals that even Jesus said many times were 'lame' {my paraphrase}! Like you, I refer to myself as a Spiritual Person & so far, God hasn't struck me down with a bolt of lightning or a plague of boils! What an interesting conversation thread has become of this great band of long ago! I am a bit confused when you say 'I might not follow Jesus as such,' yet you conclude your comments with the words Peace & Love...which is exactly what Jesus is all about! {sic} 'The Greatest Commandment'. As for people who state that so many wars have been fought about 'religion', that is absolutely historically accurate! Or oil... Did I just say that out loud? ;-) Hugs friend & God Bless Us One & All!
Spud Spinnigan at the risk of replying to my own smart-ass comment, I saw John K with his latest rebuild of the wolf at Emerald Queen Casino, Tacoma, WA, a couple years back and the dude still has the pipes.
MANY TIMES I WOULD HAVE NEVER HAD SAID THAT; IT WAS MY TO LATE BY ALL HUMAN STANDERDS I SHOULD NOT HAVE LIVED THIS LONG GOD HAS OTHER PLANS FOR ME I BEEN BLESSED WITH SO MANY CHANCES NOW IT'S GODS WAY NOT MINE I HAVE STARTED OVER AGAIN I WOULD SAY THIS TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HOW ABOUT PEOPLE ALL AROUND THE WORLD IF WE DONT GET OUR HEADS OUT OF OUR REARENDS AND START INVITEING GOD BACK INTO OUR LIVES IT WILL BE TO LATE DO YOU THINK WE WILL LIVE FOREVER SORRY WE HAVE THE SAME FATE AWAITING US WE ALL CAME IN THE WORLD THE SAME WAY BORN OF MOTHERS AND WE ALL LEAVE THE SAME WAY IN DEATH GOD CAN RESTORE I DONT CARE WHO YOU ARE GOD THROU JESUS CHRIST CAN HEAL AND RESTORE DONT WAIT TILL IT'S TO LATE
I hear you and choose to love and have understanding and respect for all i am buzzed at the moment but the message is still clear hate kills the soul love heals it and all peace
This is The Steppenwolf. They are canadian germans and liked a man called herbert hesse who wrote a long and boring book. This song is mainly about dislike for things. I think a negative song yes? As for our lord and saviour Jesus Christ, well I heard he wasn't all that and frankly was a bit of a show off. He also wasted a resurrection by basically going to heaven. Which he would have done anyway. Another case of showboating perhaps?
jackcarter71 Wow man you think this is negative. And how did you come to believe Christ was a show off? Did you meet someone that actually walked with Jesus on this Earth? Seriously I would like to know. Christ is our only hope. Did he show off when He was being tortured and beat and hung on the cross for you. Christ and this song is nothing but positive and true. Everyone may get something different from this song. If you listen to all of Steppenwolfs songs there are so many songs about love and positive reinforcement. Listen to every song on the For Ladies Only LP and maybe that will open your eyes. I wish you the best and may God bless you and yours.
Kurt Sherrick .....Obviously I didn't meet anyone who walked the earth with Jesus. They would be about 300 years old. However, my studies indicate that someone who pretended to be God's son, was in all likelihood nothing more than a mentalist. As for showing off.....turning water into wine. Come on Kurtz.
Herman, not Herbert. OUR lord? not mine. Get out of fantasy land. Und this is a very positive song. Jack, Jack, Jack, you must be from another planet. Everything you wrote is erroneous. WTF?
The message in this song is (1:) So basic and simple, (2 :) So powerful and beautiful, (3:) So lifesaving and true... and I'm fairly certain that I've only touched the surface. this song is more relavent today than ever before lsw.
& today !!!
Never too late to start all over again. Better words have rarely been spoken.

A great song from one of the most under-rated bands ever. I grew up on their messages. Their lyrics actually had meaning. And the music was second to none. Great band.
I've always found their lesser known songs to be their best.
ME TOO...
❤
NOW This is Steppenwolf. !!
Sure. I never listen to "Born to be wild" on yt. Dozens of songs are better. John Kay is the best voice to have ever appeared on this planet.
Not a lesser know song, if you lived back in the day
Ah man! this is a heavy song.
I still listen to this song today. It is very revealing, considering the economy, and the hopelessness that comes with it.
Steppenwolf, under-appreciated, under-recognized ROCK GODS!!
Matt Girvin One of the truly great rock bands... I never tire of listening to their music.
I'm with you Heimdallr!
+Matt Girvin ditto!!!when music was music!!!!
yes is aall i can say
One of the greatest song writers ever; I love Steppenwolf
I love this song
+Josie Springfield I am so glad you are here Josie I don't what I would do without my friends being on you tube

100 percent agree
One of my favorite songs, ever, and one of the best rock bands , ever!!
2020 it's never too late ✌
My #2 favorite band. Under rated, under appreciated. Don't pick and choose, just put the album on and listen. Helped get me through high school.
Any drugs involved ? Just asking.
I was 13 years old and saw them at the Eastman theatre in Rochester,ny and I was blown away. In concert they were even better.
Im 45 ..my dad had the 16 greatest hits in his 70 roadrunner on 8 track..had me hooked..i can still listen to it without skippin one song..seen them in erie pa at roar on shore few yrs ago..artpark last yr..for a guy in his mid 70s
.jonny kay can still rock
Best political band in the world. This was my generation.
What is your number one band? Don't keep us hanging.
RIP Goldy McJohn (Steppenwolf keyboardist, responsible for that distinctive organ sound on so many of their songs), who died Aug. 1 of this year (2017), age 72, of a heart attack.
Man, that is sad. His use of a Hammond B3 and a Leslie were unmatched, in my opinion. Goldy was just a fantastic keyboard player.
eternal Blessings
63 starting over again I
Their music had meaning to me then ...maybe even more meaning now that I'm older. Great music for all ages.
eternal

This is one of the most relatable and just greatest songs ever written by Steppenwolf and or the entirety of the music world!

SWEET & STEPPENWOLF - The two greatest bands either not considered great or largely forgotten.
thanks john,God bless.
actual lyrics were 'Your Parents prayed so much for you' . I bought the album in 1970. In the Army then knew what that meant.
~ "...Upon your wall hangs your degree your parents craved so much for you...."
and the one I'm listening to,actually does say, prayed so much for you
thank you very much for your service!!
