Post Edit: I guess all chickens have primary and covert feathers, however on pullet the primary and covert feathers are clearly distinguishable. Good luck selecting your laying flock
Great video, I have English Springer Spaniel, when your baby chicks started chirping they went crazy looking all over the house for them. Thanks again.
Thank you SO much for this!!!!! My new babies come on the 27th I'm so excited ...... I just love watching your channel, I learn so much and you have a great delivery style. Easy going and soothing to watch ♡♡♡ best wishes with your babies, I can't wait to watch them grow
I watched a couple other videos on this and yours was very informative. You explained the feather difference between male and female. That was very helpful to me, thank you! Loved the chickadee art too!
I was wondering what you were looking for the other day when they hatched, I saw you spread a wing. I learn something new every time I watch your videos! Thanks :)
A+ plus dear, on the clearest photos showing the feather structure of both sexes. I just subscribed, for your efforts and time taken to make this video thanks. ABCIII
Hello that is so awesome. Thank you for showing this and I love learning about chickens and learning something new today. Thank you for sharing, God bless stay safe and have a wonderful day
I seen a video of a chicken breeder and she said the rounder the egg, is most likely a hen and the long narrow egg are rooster. I would be interested if you use this method to see if she was right.
That's what we're hoping for. We used "round" eggs when we hatched both rounds of chicks. We'll see as they age, if it helped. So far, going by feathers, it worked pretty well.
I have one really round egg that is looking like a rooster, though we will be very happy if he is. His daddy who was the best rooster died so we would welcome him. I do wonder how much the breed and age can affect the egg sexing technique. I have a dozen that are in the incubator now. If the egg shape really dictates we'll have 4 roosters and 8 hens.
Just kidding. I think wait until they are 4 days. It now has differing feathers that look like a female. My bad. Probably because I was really hoping it was a rooster.
@@1870s - Oh I think it sure will! I am building a coop this summer in preparation of getting some laying hens. In the event I must buy chicks I can now double check chicks that are being sold as pullets so you have in the very least helped me.
"this"? work? maybe on Purebreds of established breeds I find my EE's and mixed all over the map on feather, comb, and growth and even behavior. A matched group of Purebreds would fgive you a known BASE to judge the others in the same group. Not so the mutts, or breeds "not finished" when the breeder passed on.
I know this. I do buy chicks from my farm store, but I don’t handle them. I do look for signs of splaying, scissor beaks, and good thrift. If I want pullets I order them, and I handle them for all the same reasons and sexing. And I don’t mind if there is a rooster or two. I have bought all roosters. I don’t think I would be to pleased that the majority of what I bought at the farm store of straight run chickens were almost all male.
From what I have read, you can mate a rooster with his mother or daughters but not with sisters and vice versa, a hen with father or sons but not brothers.
Do not use this it isn’t accurate. Mine showed 3 hens and 1 rooster. I got 2 roosters. And 2 hens. And one of the hens was one that showed a rooster. Was wayyyy off
It absolutely works but only accurate the first few days, so if you went out and looked at mature birds or older pullets then yes you might have seen a difference we've had a near 100% success rate
@@1870s I did it as soon as they hatched and checked 3 times after. Feathers showed 1 rooster 3 hens. I ended up with 2 roosters and 2 hens. And the one with the same length feathers was a hen lol

I've watched other feather sexing videos but you have explained it so clearly; thanks, I needed that!😊
Might be a good idea to either keep the ro or get another one for future flocks. We don't know what all may be coming.
This was the most helpful feather sexing vid I have seen. Thank you.

Nice job on the brooder lamp setup! The long clamp looks sturdy and adjustable.

I wish I had seen so many of your videos 6 months ago.😁 This is a great tip!
Ty for teaching this my daughter just had babe chickens, although knowing her she already knows this, she's always doing research on her chickens
That’s exciting and pretty amazing that your percentage of hens is so high! Congrats on the babies!

I always wondered how they could be sexed at such a young age. Thank you for the info.
Hatch 8 and 1 rooster 7 hens same as what your saying, also rooster voice is louder, look at the tail hens grow faster , Thank you
Thanks for sharing!! Have a wonderful day. Heading out to work in garden again 😁
Nothing more for me to do till warmer weather gets here, have fun
That 1870's Homestead well it’s cold up in northern Michigan but We just finished putting our fence up. And getting prep for warmer weather..
That's amazing! I wonder if that would work for guineas as well?
I'm not sure but I bet Mr. Google knows
Thank you so much for sharing this!! Very helpful 👍
Amazing I learned something new. Thank you for this video ❤️❤️
Very interesting and easy to understand-- thank you!
Depends on the breed
I work at a hatchery...not ALL breeds can be feather sexed. But yes u are correct, those breeds u mentioned CAN be feather sexed

Cool! I am learning new things all of the time! 😅
Very interesting. Could you give us your thoughts on the incubator and if you would get a bigger one? Thanks.
Incubator worked perfectly for small homestead, but yeah already wishing I had gotten the bigger
Would like to know if feathers sexing goes the same with Old English Bantam 🤔
not sure
A nugget of info. Thanks.
Good video
That is really great information! Thank you!
I hope it helps somebody

Does this work on black australorps?

cold nights last year and I got over 90% roosters.
Thank you!
Is this only at the first few days? Or is it the same at 1 month?
Only the first few days
So interesting
Does it work on 9 days ols chic
Nice cute baby chicks:) This was a good informational video for me. I also like to sex my chickens by their size:)
So baby girls chiks grow wings faster than baby boys !!?

Right and this would be a brother
Mam , baby chick's are not born ! They are actually hatched !!
.BTW the Roosters are Eaten when i'm hatching !!
Thank you for that i like your incubator i hope you can send me one 😍❤️
Sorry but it's not covert....it's primary secondary feathers..
all my chicks are males 😭😭
