These two, Ethan, Nat, Jordy and a few others are really being rewarded for their approach. I appreciate a good, critical, air. But rail work, control and smoothness have to still be rewarded! Glad it was justly rewarded through this comp!
Was wrong about Jack thought his rail game wasn't there, his really been working on his rail game. And to land that air reverse after missing that air is incredible. Good to see someone who isn't Brazilian doing airs.
I knew it was wrap for JJF after Jack stomped that air. Sometimes it feels like if JJF doesn't completely dominate the entire heat he doesn't always pull through. Still my favorite surfer in and out of competition.
I was thinking the air was a little over scored because of the landing but then again if he would’ve stopped it in the flats I could see it going 9+. Barrel would’ve easily gone into 8s-9s if jjf could’ve added a finishing turn.
I’m for both surfers , that 1 move air and getting a 8.0 point is not right . It over scored . ( it seem like favoring local) If Jack did 2 or 3 moves and air , then , YES , he deserves to get a good score of 6 to 9 points or more . That 1 air and no other moves before or after . The point should be 5 to 6 .
Yeah I do think JJF’s last wave deserved a higher score maybe even to take 1st just because of the combo including a small air that he landed. It didn’t have as much power but was a solid combo. Jack’s big air was great but an 8 for one move is a bit over scored, so not scoring JJF’s last wave higher than they did was weird
I love both surfers, but JJF won that final. I agree, just doing an air on a wave( even the difficulty of the wave and low probability of landing), that score was too high.
i just thought the jjf 8.5 was a tad high, the back foot disconnecting on the drop wallet move for me means I would have given it 7.9.........Jack won, truly.
Dude I was not expecting anything but a w for jjf and boy did jack play that he well. Obviously these aren’t the waves that John John really exceeds on and jack put it all so well together for a win!! The way to go jack !!
They are always overscoring the Brazilians for airs. I guess it would be strange not overscoring the house boy. Congratulations for both Jack and John.
I dont understand how people say this.....in what world is 2-3 turns more difficult or impressive than a 8 ft high 360? Like is that just a carry over from legacy surfing/style? An air is clearly a more impressive maneuver, especially on these non-barrel waves that everyone is doing turns on
@@luminisant if that big ol air only deserved an 8 then yes, or maybe a 6 or so. that said, i will concede that they tend to underscore barrels on waves where they don't happen too often (happens to JJ and Slater all the time). I'm not sure why that is the case
It came down to each riders 2nd highest rides. JJF had 4 non critical turns while Jack at amazing pace, timing and control pulled off that insane air. His degree of difficulty was far greater and riskier than JJF’s 4 turns. That is why the air won it
Wow.. An 8.1 for a half rotation frontside air! We all remember Italos backside 360 air where he got a 1.2 on a giant wave.. Think about that for a second
2 things to point out after this heat. Firs thing: Aussies started appreciate the air game, now that they finally have a surfer that can land some mediocres airs. Second thing: JJF’s airs SUCKS, it’s just shameful, he should never attempt it in front of any crowd.
@@felipesancler465 Surfing isnt just about doing Airs. thats whats wrong with the brazilians. thats all they do. to me it becoms really boring seeing the same air over and over. I rather watch JJF Rail game all that that watching italo or toledo doing airs.

A masterful performance by Jack throughout the event. Local knowledge definitely played a big part in his success at Main Break- not an easy wave, esp. at size. He did what he needed to do in every heat, nothing more nothing less, usually coming from behind. I really like his style; functional surfing without making it look too flashy. A zen performance to be sure.
I would have scored Johns wave where he disconnects from the tail a lot more, that was incredible surfing in a comp, that stuff is usually free surfing material.
@@bonsummers2657 yeah the move around the 4 min mark that was a 9.5 or 10 score that wave for mine, you don't see that kind of radical disconnect from the board often in comp surfing, it was high risk high reward in the most critical part of the wave imo.

John's first wave underscored and jacks air way overscored but WSL will do what the WSL wants. The top 5 has been set from the get go Toledo John Ethan Jack Gabby/Kelly
John John, you had it very complicated with the judges, that spin is the best of the final, much better than the poor aerial that Jack did. In another latitude you would have had other notes and the pressure would be for Jack...let's not forget that in Bells against Italo it was clearly seen what this is about now...they forget that we see it free surfers....

JJF got a 5.4 for the only tube. Jack got a 8.07 for the only air. Both were solid. Neither were epic. Difference of 2.67??? What do you think?
