  • Abdul-Wahab Kayyali (oud) and Tariq Harb (guitar) who together make up '17 Strings' perform the beautiful early 20th century composition by Tanburi Cemil Bey titled "Samai Shedd Araban". This is an arrangement for oud and guitar by Abdul-Wahab Kayyali.
'17 Strings' brings together two childhood friends who have taken divergent paths but found homes in Montreal. Tariq Harb is an award-winning classical guitar and violin performer who has written and published on arrangements for the classical guitar. Abdul-Wahab Kayyali is an accomplished oud player who has experience in polyphonic arrangement of Middle Eastern modal music. Harb and Kayyali attended the same conservatory as children learning music in Amman, Jordan - the National Music Conservatory (NMC), Harb playing the violin and Kayyali playing the oud. They have recently reconnected in Montreal and seek to reinvent their friendship and discover the musical possibilities of collaborating on their instruments. This would be the first project that brings them together to discover their shared artistic potential. Their anticipated album "Reinventions" -- music of Bach and Middle Eastern music -- seeks to challenge the frontiers of each instrument and genre, and in the process develop a repertoire that can help transcend listening borders in Canada and the world.
Tanburi Cemil Bey (1873, Istanbul - 1916, Istanbul) was an Ottoman tanbur, Turkish tambur, yaylı tambur, kemençe, and lavta virtuoso and composer, who has greatly contributed to the taksim (improvisation on a maqam) genre in Ottoman classical music. His son, Mesut Cemil Bey, was an equally renowned Turkish tambur virtuoso.
He took his first lessons in music from Kanuni Ahmet Bey and the violin player Kemani Aleksan, his first instruments thus being the violin and the kanun. After completing middle school, he continued in a school for civil servants (Mülkiye), but then devoted himself to music and abandoned his education. He began to play the tanbur quite early in his youth and by the age of 20, his renown had already spread among the tamburis of Istanbul. Reforming the traditional playing technique of the tambur, he developed an energetic technique based on a rich and agile picking style, lightening to a great extent the sonority of this instrument. Later on, he set about playing the Turkish classical kemençe (pear-shaped bowed instrument that derived from the medieval Greek Byzantine lyre) and attained an astonishingly high level of technique, so much so that the virtuosity level of the Ottoman kemençevi of Greek origin Vasilaki (1845-1907), considered as then as "the reference", came to be thought of by certain amateurs to be outmatched. He was also the inventor of the Yaylı tambur.
He was a very sensitive and nervous person, who eventually suffered from alcoholism. Most of his compositions have been preserved in his recordings, but some of his works were incomplete when he died.
This video is made possible with the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts (CCA).
It is recorded at Paroisse saint-Hughes church in Sarsfield, Ontario, Canada. Audio and video production and editing by Drew Henderson.
We would like to thank you for watching our first '17 Strings' video and we invite you to watch our upcoming videos as well from this same recording session, which will be published in the new year. As mentioned briefly above, we are also planning on recording a full album in 2024 so please stay tuned for that. Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from ours to yours!

Thank you, Tariq. That was lovely. It's great to hear music of the middle eastern tradition, which is older than the west.

A very very nice arrangement, incorporating a fretless eastern and a fretted western instrument. The quality and boldness of the arrangement as well as the unison of the musicians are breathtaking. Looking forward to hear more from you..
