  • U.S. Sugar 148, a former Florida East Coast 4-6-2 Pacific, was tasked with hauling train loads of passengers on board the blossoming Sugar Express tourist train out of Sebring and Lake Placid, Florida on February 24-26. The flat landscape allowed the train to run at track speed, something not often seen with steam excursion operations anymore. U.S. Sugar 148 put on quite a show for passengers and railfans alike. It’s a sweet ride.

    The 148 does an impressive show at a speed of 45 mph with a lot of black smoke. For an oil burning Pacific, It sure is impressive Great video!

    148 is a great engine. Riding behind it on the 25th doing track speed was a real treat.

    148 seems to be gaining popularity, and for good reason. She’s a great little pacific.

    US Sugar #148 ex Florida East Coast #148 is the primary steam locomotive of the Sugar Express until Atlantic Coast Line #1504 finishes restoration. The Sugar Express is a famous train. That's one neat catch.

    Great engine, train and video! So glad to see a Pacific able to run like she should and not be relegated to a 5mph, weed-grown tourist operation. Anyone know the history of the cars?

    I really do not like the double-beam headlight. I'm pretty sure it's necessary for running on a mainline, but I hate the vertical setup they did. It should have been horizontal like the B&O had. It doesn't ruin 148 for me though, as I love that USSC lets her run at 40 mph. I can't wait for 1504 to be running alongside her.

    • @DynamoProductions-trains
      @DynamoProductions-trains  Рік тому +2

      Dual-beam headlight is used when they’re scheduled to run at night, as you can clearly see in this video.

    • @TrainsAreReallyCool
      @TrainsAreReallyCool Рік тому +3

      @@DynamoProductions-trains Oh. Didn't know that, although it makes sense since the single-beam headlights are more for just allowing people to see you coming and not for seeing ahead of you. That's what cowcatchers were made for.
      I hope I'm not completely wrong here, I got this information from a guy who works at the Colorado Railroad Museum.

    • @TheNoogaRailfan
      @TheNoogaRailfan Рік тому +3

      Two whistles - supposedly, the first one featured had a malfunction, so the railroad quickly brought in the whistle it wore when released from the shop as an emergency.

    Question: Why do I keep seeing baggage cars in the middle of trains. I always thought that they belonged at the front of the train, but I keep seeing them elsewhere on the train. I even see pictures of steam excursions from the 1940s and 1950s of baggage cars in the middle or not at the front of trains. Why is that?

    • @DynamoProductions-trains
      @DynamoProductions-trains  Рік тому +3

      Baggage cars nowadays tend to be used more for riders and souvenirs so they are placed in the middle of the train so they can be easily accessed by everyone on board
