Yeah, second storm warned for 80 mph winds to go through that area for the day. I would be a bit nervous too, I've yet to be under a warning for anything over 70 mph.
For those of you who like storms, this is for you. Nobody got missed by this. This is a rare event for these parts. All too often when it comes to storms in this area, they turn out to be hit and miss, which really sucked if you"re into storms and get missed.
Thanks so much! I take as many precautions as possible. When dealing with wind, I always try to position myself upwind of any trees or powerlines that may fall. You'll notice I'm usually out of range of large trees in my videos with high winds.
Oh wow... I live in Woodbury. They said it was a rare derecho. It was surprising because central USA gets the most tornadoes AND derechos. And us in New Jersey got a rare derecho. What are the chances of that??
The derecho occured on this same day but I missed it. This was actually a supercell that occured in a second round later on that evening, and affected a smaller area. The supercell started to transition to a more outflow dominate storm as it impacted me. I believe the Derecho impacted Woodbury between noon and 1pm. This was around 7pm.
@@storm12weather The storm that hit smaller areas was one of mine. Hail did fall at 0.75 inches. I notice your at the Deptford Walmart. Which is about 5-9 minutes away from where I was. But anyways. Around 12:25 was when the rain first hit. It was heavy. And I did record it. (I didn't post it). Behind my house is a hill with a huge field with sewer tunnels. The entire field on the North-West part was flooded at least up to 1.5-2ft. The rain continued until about 1:05-ish. About 2 days later around 11:30. Lightning was literally lighting up the sky like a ton of flashlights. Again, I was recording. It surprisingly wasn't raining. But I know the lightning was insane.
I work at a McDonald’s in Washington twp and when this hit I for sure thought I would have to get my crew and the people taking shelter in my restaurant in the walk in fridge. It was scary
Its possible that was the first round earlier in the day. There was a derecho before this storm that affected a larger area. This storm was later on around 7pm and affected a more localized area.
It was crazy, i literally recieved an tornado alert but didnt take it serious cuz we dont get tornados. When its a hurricane watch we get the aftermath or residual here in Winslow Township, New Jersey. So i went to Target anyway and while in Target i heard hail and winds hit the ceiling of the building and peaked out the front from approching a register n was like o hell nah, dropped my basket n got the hell out. As my dad drove we got to the applebees on cross keys and seen complete grey around us, couldn't see nothing, i leaned forward to guide my dad looking for the lines in the street, any cars approaching, traffic lights, to turn, etc. we just barely seen everything to get home just up the street safely. I never in my life seen a Tornado hit New Jersey ever. Ill belive the Tornado alert next time on my phone. The items in target wasnt worth staying
Tornadoes are not common in New Jersey, but they are not unheard of either. They are not like midwestern tornadoes that can carve paths for dozens of miles and flatten towns, but brief, generally smaller tornadoes can occur. If a storm is rotating (which this was) there is a tornado potential. Remember the NWS does not issue warnings for no reason. If you receive a tornado warning, you should always take it seriously.
Good question. This was taken to the south of the inflow notch as the RFD surged forward and began to take over the supercell. The Supercell was tornado warned as it passed over, but the circulation was about 2 miles to my north. So this wind was associated with the growing RFD that ultimately dominated as the storm began to shift to an outflow dominate structure.
Usually elevated thunderstorms downdrafts do not reach the surface. So while its storming east/ northeast winds are in the cells. Elevated storms are very complicated. I have even seen winds increased out of the east not strong but an increase. Also I have seen winds shift to the north or northwest while the cells are moving in from the sw/w. I think those are from a meso low embedded in the inversion layer..
@@storm12weather so I'm guessing your winds were out of the west or northwest assuming the storm was moving northeast. Rear flank downdraft is the strongest like other storms where the front part of the storm is the strongest
Up where I live in the Mid-Hudson valley, it's been very quiet. All the activity has been to the south. It'd be nice if at least one of these times, the storms came to me. Lol
@@storm12weather relatable. Here in Southeastern Ohio it was pretty quiet as well. But that's normal here. Everything always goes North and South of us and we get the beating sunshine lol
Thanks! And I actually used a Nikon D7500 with a wide angle, adjustable lens to record this. It takes great pictures but the video is pretty good too. You can record at 1080p at 60 fps, or 4k at 30 fps. For storms I usually use 1080 at 60 fps for a smoother video. I forget the actual lens specifications so I'll have to look when I get home.
@psychotic kittykat Very true. But risks come with a lot of things. Weather cannot be judged on any moral standard because it's simply nature. It's the world in motion and we should respect it. It just happens, and sometimes people are in the way. Nature is inherently chaotic.
That storm was really scary for us, since here we don’t get storms like that.. It’s been 3 days in a row with these storms!
Wow, what a storm. Great work!
Thank you so much! The storm was warned for 80 mph gusts just before it hit me. I got a little nervous watching the core racing toward me like a wall!

Wow, this storm especially, has impressive rain curtains. Looking at the road is almost mesmerizing!
Agreed! I really enjoyed documenting this one. Really great experience.
