His son was Andres Pardo de Tavera Luna was a famous architect. He’s the architect of most of the buildings we see today in Escolta. He also built the first air conditioned building in the country.
This is how a documentary should be presented, unbiased and non-conclusive. The decision is left to the audience based on facts and witnesses during their time.
Wonderful documentary, unbiased and honest. This is how we should weigh things, stories and most specially our history, by looking and documenting the facts because there are always two sides of a story. Juan Luna was a great artist and propagandist but sadly his personal life was very tragic. May their souls rest in peace. Thanks to GMA 7, I-Witness and Mr. Howie Severino. Mabuhay po kayo.
This story of Luna is searched meticulously and beautifully and it is so ironic that he was trying to prove something and at the end it is tragically proved of himself.
I salute and I bow down to people who earnestly trying to search for truth... even those truths hurt.
And this story certainly is one of them.
Mr. Howie Severino, you declared a clear stand by the end of documentary. And I do agree with you.
kara david and howie severino wow the best
Howie is best. Kara hindi maganda style sobra pakialam, pilit, staged, superficial.
esteban turan Nagustuhan ko yung documentary. Nakakaiyak sa sobrang ganda. Nagtaka ako bakit yun ang napiling title niya. Halfway through the docu, I thought pang praise lang siya kay Luna but at the end, Severino gave an unbiased account of what Luna committed during his time in Paris. Smooth.
@@mangteban3640 hahah sure pilit si kara? Ikaw lang kilala kong ayaw kay Kara!
also Mr. Jay Taruc.. he's so good and intelligent.
The documentary justifies why he is a brilliant artist but not a hero. He showed indeed that Filipinos are not savages with his exceptional works. His personal life showed otherwise let alone the tragic fate Luna brought to his wife and in-laws.
Clearly, he's a womanizer and a murderer but a person with an amazing talent and an outstanding painter. Though not the hero kind at all. Andres Bonifacio will always be my Philippine's national hero.
Gma 24 oras
Juan luna shows he's paintings what Spaniards do to the filipinos
Indeed not a hero..
Why not Jose Rizal?
The Americans made Jose Rizal the National Hero of the Philippines and not the Filipinos , perhaps to discouraged armed rebellion from the Filipinos. Andres Bonifacio is the Father of the Philippine Revolution, and not Jose Rizal.

Late bloomer ako siguro since recently lang ako nakapunta sa National Museum of Fine Arts. I'm dwarfed by the Spoliarium. Napaka surreal ng feeling, standing before Luna's master piece... history before my eyes.

Right? I was speechless after that powerful ending. Applause to those who made this docu possible, a great eye opener👏
Of course the people of the Philippines.

I love history and that's why I love GMA, ang gagaling gumawa ng documentaries na gaya nito.
GMA is still the best pagdating sa documentaries tataasan ka talaga ng balahibo pang world class talaga.
That awkward moment when Howie Severino took seriously what Gaston Damag said about illustrados going to paris "for the girls" and there was a pause..
I've always known Juan Luna as a very great artist kaya when I first read about this, I was really shocked. Parang di ako makapaniwala na someone so great can do something like that but then I realized, that's just how we humans are. We all have two sides-- good and bad. Grabe lang yung kay Juan Luna 😅 (sorry for the lack of term). Anyways, very good documentary. As always, GMA is the best when it comes to these. 👍🏻👍🏻❤
Pinatay niya asawa niya at biyenan

Their son was never found, I wonder what happened to him. It could’ve shed light on what happened that night.
His son became a notable Filipino architect. Search for his name "Andrés Luna de San Pedro". His works include the Crystal arcade building, Perez-Samanillo building, and many more. I'm an architecture student btw. Nagulat rin ako about Juan Luna's past kasi I watched the play named "Obra ni Juan" by PhilStagers sa aming school.
@@ruthnesskindless so, did he say what actually happened during that night?
Great Documentary!
@@ruthnesskindless thanks for the info!
I cannot even fathom why Juan Luna was considered a national hero when most of his life achievements happened in Spain and France. While it's quite remarkable given his background as a sauvage to have his paintings recognized in Europe's epicenter of the arts in that period, it is undeniable that those are his personal achievements and had nothing to do with our country's struggle for independence, not to mention the crime he comitted. I would say a national artist would be more appropriate.
this is really an eye opener. thank you howie severino, one of the best journalists in our country
Grabe..
A bit of a temper? We're talking double murder here, and spousal abuse.. thanks for docu... well-done. I have always wondered where the Luna residence was in Paris and if it still existed.
Petition to remove Juan Luna as National Hero. He's a National Artist tho, but a hero? No way.
this reminds me of the movie "Summer in February" how a man is being applaused for his artwork while his wife is being neglected. I believe to this day that man established a good reputation for his works

Pwede siguro.National Artist at hindi National Hero..
Wow after 2 years.. Pero magandang topic to ah, pwede pang debate. Thanks Mr. Howie and GMA IWitness. ✌️
Si Nora Aunor nga di magawaran ng National Artist kasi sa issue nya about drugs before. What more kung tao na pumatay pa. Haaayst.. if his aim is to raise the filipino's name in history probably yeah he did that but for me he is a big insult saating mga Pilipino. Nakakahiya at nakakasulasok ang ginawa nya. We are no different from Sauvage since what happened to Paz and her mom was not properly handled. The fact remained that their killer got away from murder.
Ryan Lajara yun yung problema duon eh. Technically oo nagawaran syang national artist but if this is the artist that our posterity will look up to and they'll find out ung history nya, he wouldn't be a great example.
Ryan Lajara we make the demands.
Kudos !
Great job, sir Howie! This is a history lesson at its best.
They forgot to mention that after Juan Luna was released he went on to design the uniforms and insignia of the Philippine Revolutionary Army at the request of his brother General Antonio Luna. Apparently Juan never returned to the Philippines. His son Andres became an architect and designed many grand old buildings in Manila in the 20th century.
One of the best documentaries i ever watched. Thanks Howie Severino and iwitness.

Thank you very much. Very informative. JL is one of my favorite filipino painter but i never knew his life history until now. Amazing.
Thank you for the information. Napakaganda ng documentary.
Painter din si Hitler noon. No one remembers that as his legacy but all the people whom he massacred. Talents do not make up for your sins. Di nakakaproud
I’ve learned to only show your good side to the world and always suppress that inner urge.
Well Hitler did not even pass the entrance exam for fine arts. The only things he sold most of the time were post cards. You could barely call him a painter.
Hitler was a self-proclaimed painter. He was an egomaniac and that was a recipe for disaster.
@@jeffersonmcomen7226 well true, Hitler could not have been in power of Germany stayed out of war.
Allmost all of the Germans were desperate to try to Live there live but it make it almost impossible becuase of paying war reparation to the allies and hyperinflation, and they saw Hitler that he will bring Germany to greatness but it fails and devide Germany in half after the war.

Howie Severino's style of reporting is not bad 👍🏼 Thanks for iWitness for producing this story of Juan Luna and for digging deeper into the history 👏
It was a privilege to has watched this documentary. Enlightening me as to another dimension or state of mind with regards to the unwritten or unknown facts of our heroes. Heroes do come in many different forms and so are villains. the documentary gave me to realize that written history also has 3 dimensions. The TRUTH, THE LIE and what was written. It is up to us which to believe or we can just ignore the facts.

sya lang nang dun sa malaking room. celling must have been 30 feet high. Mai mga malaking kadena sa sides... Bilang isang artist, it will move you. Very bold strokes, pag malapit ka at na sa side view naman parang abstract , waves of paint...
Can't imagine pano nya ginawa yun. So big , so colossal ... Paint protruding over 5 to 7 inches or even more... ( no exaggeration) pag view mo sa side of canvas o painting . Awesome experience!
