  • Competition for fabled “unicorns” has become the obsession among most venture capitalists. But does chasing one-in-a-million bets make sense? Or does it distort the incentives for entrepreneurs and funders?
A conversation about what makes for sustainable funding, and the risks and rewards of chasing the big prize.
Chris Sacca, founder and chairman, Lowercase Capital
    Peter Thiel, partner, Founders Fund

Sorkin proves that he can be a good interviewer when he isn't on CNBC where he constantly interrupts guests. This was an amazing interview with two amazing people!

Sacca and Thiel don't have an educational background in tech and yet all the investments they make are primarily in tech... Goes to show you can self teach yourself anything

Chris Sacca won't answer a question because he doesn't want to end the talk on such a "negative" question? Get over it. Answer the question. It definitely wasn't a bad one and my suspicion is the only problem was a looming bad answer from Chris. I would've liked to hear more from Peter on that as well.

+Robin Hood Agreed. I am big fan of Thiel. I think it's somewhat disrespectful to refer to someone by a pronoun when they're present in the conversation

Trying to win points with the ladies, how ridiculous, was loving the talk until it became an identity politics debarcle. Looks like investing in unicorns actually makes you more regressive and liberal, who would have thought.

Indeed. Hard to stomach this white knighting. If they are sincere, then they really aren't as smart as people think. This white guilt and pandering to women nonsense is dangerous.

How does supporting women-owned businesses regressive? In case you didn't know, regressive means less developed, so don't be vile. And he's not trying to win points with the ladies. Maybe you missed that part, but he has three daughters! It's natural for someone to want the best for one's kids so it makes sense that he's standing up for women. It's really sad that a man steps out and confidently supports female-run ventures and people hit him with unnecessary labels "liberal", "regressive", "identity politics". Honestly, why does it hurt you so badly just to hear that females are systemically disadvantaged in the labour market and this should be addressed? What is so bad about wanting to correct a social injustice? What do you lose by learning about other people's struggles? To you, Larry Kotch, I'm disappointed. And to you Patrick Michalina (Software Engineer at Blizzard Entertainment), you need to take some classes in history, the humanities, and ethics ... because your claim "white guilt and pandering to women nonsense is dangerous" is wrong in 100 million ways and I can't even begin to explain. Have a good day you both (and everyone else who liked your comments in support). May God bless you.

here we go: we cannot escape the need to gravitate toward "racism, sexism."
    *solution:*
if you are a woman, go to the about 1,000,000,000 other women on the planet, who have capital that can be lost in an investment, present your plan and ask for some capital to support your vision. and if your vision is great and executed well, all those other billions of (supposed) "sexists/racists" will clamor to get in on that great event!

I'm kind of pissed that Thiel didn't call out Sacca with his regressive bullshit. He is clearly the better thinker in that arena. I can understand why but Sacca keeps pulling this white guilt shtick that completely invalidates his brilliant investing "idiot savant" would be a good characterization I guess.

Another "red pill" activist. You don't have to be angry, why not listen to the points he makes? I don't agree with all of them, but he makes points. People aren't perfect judges of competence... and many times there will be women entrepreneurs who will have great ideas that no one believes in. Many great entrepreneurial ventures were lead by founders who absolutely believed in what they did irrelevant of what others thought, they believed. Its important to teach people to take risk and to believe, and its important to teach women too if thats the path they want to go down that path. People are so polarized and lack the ability to have rationale discussions, and I'm glad Peter let Chris say he is two cents.

I know how many times I've been right next to greatness (skill and skillsharing wise) and the circle literally physically closes me out and I would feel too humiliated to ask a question or learn or get ACCESS because you feel like at best the annoying little sister who is a fucking joke and has no business being there. A man fruend on the other hand? Open access and builds up a guys cred to explain and teach to *him*.
Music, tech, investing, you name it-almost any field if a man is in the room.
This is a description by the way. I'm not hating on anyone-if I was I wouldn't put it here desperately hoping to be heard and learned *from* by guys in an all male video or an audience half men.
A huge example is how much women comedians have to resort to sex jokes to make it in.
