I find Sonic generations on the 3DS to be terrible, compared to its console counterpart and by itself. The gameplay is really not that good, at all. I think a better comparison is Sonic colors on the DS and the Wii. Although the Wii has better music and graphical fidelity, the level design in the DS version is stellar, and in my opinion goes far beyond the Wii version. Although this is all my opinion so I'd love to hear what you have to say!
There was a UA-camr early this year who said he wasn't going to play the DS version of Generations because it's the same as the console one just on DS. Sad that he didn't know there where actually different levels.
I just wish every stage was from a handheld Sonic game, and that the Act 1 stages in the Classic era didn't directly copy the Genesis stages' level design 1:1. Then I would consider it a more worthy investment alongside the console version
It's even more surprising because they rushed things day 1, that's why Act 3 of Scrap Brain zone in Sonic 1 is a color swap of Labyrinth zone and why Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles are different games.
They claimed this. I don't think you could find any changes from the footage (E3 maybe?) from a month before it was delayed, and the final game. SEGA probably delayed an unannounced Sonic game to improve it, and then spaced out the release of Fire and Ice to fill in the gap better.
its funny because the most rushed game at the time was generations which was in development before colors. (colors was supposed to be a gens port) and even the only other games i can think of getting delays are tsr and mania
It isn't godawful, but it is one of my least favorite Sonic games personally. The controls are slippery, the level design is iffy at times, some stages are just awful like Sky Road Zone 2 and Frozen Factory Zone 3, I hate how Wisps are the most required they've ever been in any Sonic game prior and that the gyro controls are forced on you too, in way more cases than they should be. And don't even get me started on those Special Stages.

I liked them too but they definitely could've done without the gyro (heck the game would've worked fine without gyro controls in general) since it only really added an unnecessary gimmick to an otherwise pretty good special stage.
I honestly prefer them to the halfpipe in sonic 2, but being fair I suck so much at the half pipe in sonic 2 that I can't beat the second one, sooooooo yeah that's the only reason
As someone who actually went on and 100% completed this sucker of a game, S-Ranking everything. I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the motion controls gimmicks inside the regular stages actually ruined this game. Yes, the special stages are annoying, but at least they can be isolated, but when the metal wisp appeared for the first time, that was it, the game took a nosedive.
One day my local gamestop's where going out of business and I went and bought a few stuff. I pick up sonic colors ds and sonic generation 3ds. I beat generation first and I got to say I think it's a good game. The dreamcast era on 3ds was difficult for me but I got through it, and the final boss was difficult for me beat since of the control. However I was able to get a few zone to s rank. I played it a good bit when I was in 7th and 8th grade, I played the multiplayer a lot too, never beat the dark world thing though where it's a harder version of the main game
I never had problems with the gyroscope calibrations in Lost World. Not once. The only thing that was hard to do was in the later stages that acted like mazes and needed more precise controls. But practice did the job.
There was also classic sonic ports on the original DS, sonic 1-knuckles, along with knuckles in sonic 2. But the 3DS has is a better port in terms of less screen crunch
I haven’t played the sonic generations 3ds game in years!! The graphics have aged I used to think they looked like a movie!! I remember having such a hard time with radical highway and time eater the nostalgia I have for this game is amazing!!!
I'm going to be honest, I LOVED playing Sonic Generations on 3ds, a lot. So much so infact i played it on my 3ds back in 2014. I played it 371 (at least the last time i checked) times I hold that version of generations to my heart I just loved to play this game when i was younger

Its also aperently easy and i would love to get a easy game with a end boss wich is like the second final boss in Cuphead and thats kinda intresting
I never actually had a problem the Lost Worlds special stages but I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that I played them in a swivel chair which meant I never had the calibration issues since I had a full 360 degree of motion. That said, it has the same problem that other nintendo titles at the time (namely on the wii) had where the motion controls were highly unnecessary for what you were doing and I think sonic team eventually just ended up patching the game to let you use the buttons and control stick instead at least on the Wii U version of the game.
I didn't much care for Generations 3DS, although that's just my opinion. I found the modern sonic stages to be a bit "Press and Hold Y" for my taste (if you get the timing down, you can beat green hill zone act 2 only touching the D-pad/circle pad twice - once at the start of the stage to make Sonic start running and once to slide under a ledge near the end the end; the rest is just jumping and holding the boost button, which makes Sonic continue to run automatically) and all the boss fights were kinda 1. Dodge bullets and wait for boss to stop shooting at you. 2. Homing attack boss. 3. Rinse and repeat. I also wasn't a huge fan of the controls, although that might honestly just be because I'm bad at Sonic in general. I personally found the boss fights, especially the final one, especially BS in the controls department -- the timing is extremely precise and you have to press the indicated button _during_ the audio cue as opposed to immediately after. The thing is, the boss fights seem like they should be incredibly easy, but because of that bizarre counter-intuitive timing (and requirement for reflexes I don't have) ... ...well, let's just say I got fed up with game overs after about half an hour, used a cheat to give myself 99 lives, and reached the final boss with 2 remaining. Again, I'm not great at Sonic. Just my two cents though. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Look Im probably gonna be the only one but when I played Lost World 3DS Special Stages I thought they were the shit! no cap but now they still pretty dope but hey thats my opinion and I respect yours
I played the console version of Generations recently, and I have to say it has gotta be my favourite Sonic game! I wouldn’t mind checking out the 3DS version, even if it isn’t quite as good. Plus I might as well get it now while the eShop is still open, right?
I had to clear up space in the kitchen to be able to play the Lost World Special Stages and actually be able to get the Chaos Emeralds. Mostly because I have Aspergers, and one of the physical impairments of Aspergers that most people don't actually know is that fine motor skills are greatly affected by the disorder (you basically are incapable of spatial awareness, which means you will get bruises a lot from bumping into doors and chairs and tables), so Sega choosing to make the gyroscope controls mandatory for that was very frustrating and I literally had to walk around my house to be able to get enough body momentum to be able to move Sonic well enough to finish the stages. 😩
Batch of opinions on these games Generations 3DS is actually pretty good. I wish it took more stages from the handheld side of the series, but either way it was a fun romp Lost World 3DS has the worst special stages in the entire series. At least Heroes never made me dizzy and want to throw up. Shattered Crystal is the worst game here. Imo, I think this is worse than Rise of Lyric. The levels are boring as sin and the collection aspect is tedious. I at least reached the end of Rise of Lyric but I put Shattered Crystal down by by the penultimate world. I've never played Fire and Ice but I heard it was actually fun.
The first video I ever uploaded was on Lost World. Honestly, it's...a pretty fun game, once you've gotten the controls down. It is SO BROKEN. There's one stage where you can literally skip like _half_ the obstacles.
2:43 If you've not played Sonic Heroes before, this is a lot like that game's special stages, both visually and gimmickwise. They were by far the worst part of Sonic Heroes because you could barely control the heroes, making them get stuck to the ceiling against your intentions. It's adjusted to control similar to Sonic 2's special stages, thus making them much better. As for the racing parts of Generations, I can at least understand why you're racing Metal; it's a throwback to Sonic CD, Metal's debut game. Shadow's segments though... I guess it's similar to Sonic Rivals, but... that's kind of a stretch, I suppose.
Am I the only one who thinks the concept of slight metroidvania in Sonic woul be neat? Like what if you had Sonic 3 and knuckles, but you can change characters at the lamp posts. Sonic has his special shield jumps and you have to collect items in the stage?
I played Generations 3DS, Lost World 3DS, and Shattered Crystal when they came out. The first two I enjoyed them and still find fun now (LW Special Stages not withstanding). Shattered Crystal I liked initially but then I grew more and more disappointed with as time went on. Big shame because it was part of the time I really began to follow gaming hype cycles and getting games Day 1 that were not Pokemon.
Gil, about that person who would say you suck at the lost world special stages, that's me, but honestly it's still really hard especially with the capture hardware.
I been watching your stuff for awhile noa. I love videos like this so much knowledge. I am definitely subscribed to your channel. Amazing work man. I been smoking joints to your videos a lot lately hahah big fan man.
Generations 3DS was a mixed bag for me. It's one of very few games I beat anyway despite not really enjoying it all that much on the whole. If a game's not doing it for me I usually drop it before the end but I didn't for this one for some reason. Guess it's because I didn't have that many other 3DS games at the time. Still own it though.
I almost 100%’ed shatters Crystal. I missed 1 blueprint. 1. It was in one of the lvls in the final world, I spent ages scouring the lvl for it, never found it. I couldn’t find any playthroughs that found it either. It annoyed me
I think 12 year old me was insane because I 100% completed Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal. Every emblem, Knuckles token, blueprint, etc. All of it. To this day I still don't know why.
Call me crazy but I honestly like Shattered Crystal. Even back when I played OG Sonic games, I was the type of person who took my time and explored the area so this felt right at home. I also enjoyed the story which was funny, and I enjoyed the Free Comic that was in the game. I really liked that feature.
Only one I have was the lost worlds port. It’s... eh? Like I play it. Don’t hate it. Sometimes feel the level design is lacking, but I like the control.

Look Im probably gonna be the only one but when I played Lost World 3DS Special Stages I thought they were the shit! no cap but now they still pretty dope but hey thats my opinion and I respect yours
The sonic 1 & 2 ports were actually built from the ground up. Which is why they were able to add the 3D effect.
There's no feasible way Boom Knuckles doesn't accidentally eat bees every now and then. It's entirely on brand, if not on model.
genertions in general lacked some really good stage inclutions.
Yeah, Gens 3DS needs some more content. 7 zones is not enough.
The Generations special stages are from Sonic Heroes.
1:24 There's Sonic Classic Collection.
Almost a year later, AntDude said it out personally that Boom Knuckles looks like he ate bees
But wait, that isn’t all!
What about... Sonic PSP games?
Oh right there were only 2.

You should stand up and do it. Standing up and doing it ao y oooi u can move your whole body is much much much better than doing it sitting down.
Batch of opinions on these games
Generations 3DS is actually pretty good. I wish it took more stages from the handheld side of the series, but either way it was a fun romp
Lost World 3DS has the worst special stages in the entire series.
Ay, Sonic Generations was my first 3ds game. Pretty fun
2:50 Actually they're more based on Sonic Heroes' special stages rather than Sonic 2
Really? Noice
Great video. Generations and Fire & Ice are both decently fun
I been watching your stuff for awhile noa. I love videos like this so much knowledge. I am definitely subscribed to your channel. Amazing work man. I been smoking joints to your videos a lot lately hahah big fan man.
2:43 they were from Sonic Heroes.
The special stages in Gen 3DS is more akin to the special stages in Sonic Heroes. In fact an almost exact lifting.
I played Lost World 3ds's special stages in class once. I don't know what people were thinking
Yeah, the sonic generations 3DS special stages actually come from sonic heroes
2:52 pssst, a better comparison would be the Sonic Heroes special stages
Odd. I never had any problems with Lost World's Special Stages. I got through them just fine.
FINALLY THE SONIC GAMES I SPEED RAN AS A KID
Sonic Lost World is a prime example of the "kids will play anything" mentality
3DS was the dark era from portable sonic
Classic Sonic in 3DS has stages based around the homng attack, which kinda feels more like Sonic Advance rather than the original.
Fire and Ice is really underrated
I definitely enjoy these longer videos.
I kinda like sonic generations on the 3ds more than the other releases because it feels like another sonic rush
Who said Lost World 3DS is bad? I enjoyed it more than the Wii U version, the controls for the 3DS actually feel funner, faster and responsive
The next video in this series I guess you can call it will be the Nintendo Switch probably, even though it’s a hybrid console.
Oh sonic lost world was the first and only game I ever returned.
You and antdude are literally almost exactly like eachother both of you make such good videos
Yes, the Lost World 3DS Special Stages are not good with the gyro controls
Anyone who might want it sonic generations 3ds is on sale for 10 bucks on the eshop and so are a lot of other sonic games
Classic sonic's physics are so much better then how he handles on the console generations.
Generations 3DS was my first sonic game
Regretted deleting fire and ice. Because of touching shattered crystal I didn't gave fire and ice a chance
And somecallmejohnny thinks Knuckles is storing nuts for the winter.
if nintendo could make ocarina of time and majoras masak 3d then sega should have been able to make full 3d sonic stages no issue.
Thanks for covering it
Only one I have was the lost worlds port. It’s... eh? Like I play it. Don’t hate it. Sometimes feel the level design is lacking, but I like the control.
